Will Hendrickson miss national finals? They definitely have a strong chance, but I think missing finals and getting 13th-17th is a little more realistic based off of how the bottom half of Nats finals is going to be like this year.

Will Hendrickson miss national finals? We'll find out late Saturday afternoon. Until then, it's all speculation.

Amazingly, almost every finalist band was a top 14 band to each prelims judge, with the following few exceptions: Music Ind: 14th Leander (15th Pearland) Music Ens: 7th Cy-Fair 12th Timber Creek 13th Keller Central (T14th Cedar Park and Keller) (T16th Coppell and Round Rock) Visual Ens: 14th Wylie East (16th Vista Ridge) GE Mus 2: 9th Timber Creek (15th Marcus) Another way to think of it: of the 98 ordinals assigned to the top 14 bands (7 judges x 14 finalists), 93 were 14th or higher. The Visual Ind, GE Mus 1, and GE Vis judges all saw the top 14 bands as the top 14 bands. This is one way of explaining the sizable gap between 14th and 15th place. Nerding out a bit more: compare this to the St. Louis Super Regional this year, where there were 22 instances of the top 14 bands from prelims placing below 14th. At Indy, there were 20 instances of this. At San Antonio, the gap between 14th and 15th was 1.95. At St. Louis, within 1.95 points of 14th-place Lindbergh was 20th-place Nixa. At Indy, within 1.95 points of 14th-place Centerville was 24th(!!)-place Beavercreek. Different numbers, different shows, yes, but it’s interesting how these speak to just how large the bubbles were in St. Louis and Indianapolis… yet, apparently not so much in San Antonio. (Which is also wild given how, you know, probably the top 25-40 bands at San Antonio would’ve had a shot at making finals at those other two Super Regionals!!) I think the interpretation of the bubble gap is a bit off, especially considering how the panel 1 judges had much to do with how the actual “bubble” shaped out, ranking 12th, all the way to 18th ultimately. They had 3 of the top 6 in prelims in the final block of Friday alone, along with the Keller ISD bands and Leander, all of them placing within the top 20. They have to make distinctions between each group and place them in their own “tiers” essentially when there’s so many great groups playing in that 1 block to where CTJ, FloMo, and Reagan were the top groups by a significant margin, and Keller was able to stand out enough from the tier below them in Leander + the other two KISD schools, that they fit into being the 4th placing group in panel 1. Marcus was 5th in panel and they were already 12th overall. There’s definitely reasons for the gap, and panel 1 judging for that last Friday night block definitely assisted in shaping the gap that ended up being there.

You know this contest is deep when a regional champion is sitting at 58th place. Jeez. Or that the regional in question was particularly weak? Not ALL Texas regionals are that great (just many of them). They definitely weren’t a 58th in my eyes though, we’ll see what they’re able to do at state in a few days

Area G bands have a really hard time climbing out of the bottom 8 or so spots, along with Area A bands. And JBA’s shows really aren’t UIL friendly—although I think this year is a bit toned down in a good way.

Well, I guess the reason would be that it is SUCH a deep contest. But still. 😂

What a treat! I actually stayed up all the way to "break ranks". lol. Reagan still my fav Texas show this season. The Woodlands comes in second. Obviously no downslide after a big director change. The cool thing about Reagan's guard is they can use their masks for Halloween again next year!!
Was it just me or did several mics not work pre-lims and finals. Flower Mound comes to mind at finals.

Was it just me or did several mics not work pre-lims and finals. Flower Mound comes to mind at finals. I just remembered that at least one, if not several, solo mics for John B. Alexander didn't work. This might be why their music and GE music scores tanked.

My band performed Red Cape Tango a few years ago, so I’m familiar with the piece and was very confused on why the solos were so quiet until I noticed the student and staff scrambling around the sound cart. They plugged it in for the very last note.

It's a shame Reagan isn't going to nats, their show feels like it has another week of growth left in it. That show looks like an absolute beast to march and I wouldn't have been surprised to have seen them reach 2019 levels of given just a little more time to clean

Super cool show that was absolutely captivating. They march so well and the guard reminds me of Avon 2009.

Will Hendrickson miss national finals? nope. I was about to post too! Good to see this thread getting some traction😂 I think the only things keeping SA from being even more competitive as it already was this year are the increased commitment some groups have to make in it not only being a 3-day trip, but a 5-day trip extending now with every classification having UIL state every year👀 some school might choose to focus on one over the other, especially considering if they qualify obviously! The other is simply the max number of entries that a SR is allowed to have haha, M&G, prosper, and Carroll, along with other excellent bands like Wakeland, Lone Star, and Duncanville, all made a big splash in their competitive seasons this year, imagine if they decided to show up😮And even if they all wanted to go, not all of them would be able to fit! Mix in more of the 5A Waco groups that did well and didn’t go to SA and you’re already over 90 entries with so much competition to be had, it’s good that they standardized and maxed out the number of entries, but there’s definitely still going to be a large demand for this contest and so many talented bands competing from top to bottom, it’s crazy how this contest is only looking to get better from here👀

I definitely think there will be an effect of some sort.

However, if future state contest dates are set like they were in 2021 (5A on Monday/Tuesday, SA on Friday/Saturday, 6A on the following Monday/Tuesday), those schools and other state advancing 5As have to stay at San Antonio for at least 7 days (at least 1 day for rehearsal at San Antonio before state, then the 6 days of contests.) I doubt Frisco ISD will allow that to happen because that would be too many school days missed and it would be prohibitively expensive.

I am definitely aware of the strength of all the Frisco bands for sure! The situation you’re describing is alleviated at least by the fact that Frisco ISD REFUSES to have 6A schools, they’re all 5A, probably mandated to be that way😂 I don’t think the 5A’s have to deal with any more than 5 missed days of school ultimately, if they go through with UIL State and also BOA SA. SA and Austin 6A’s and below just have long drives home to where they probably don’t have to miss school as much, hopefully for them

I know the discussion of how many contests and days away from school is definitely happening at lots of Texas schools in planning for next year. While traveling to GN usually factors a day off cushion to get settled and practice before the first performance- usually for state bands get an early start the day of and go straight into performances in San Antonio. If North/Dallas schools do both state and BOA SA- I could see the 5a schools coming down for the mon/Tuesday before… driving home through the night afterwards and kids going to school thursday and friday- and then driving back down to BOA SA.
a real Debate/concern for those bands outside of the San Antonio regional area is how much is too much travel for the kids and the parents that accompany the kids. I'm sure each band will discuss and try to figure out logistics and what is possible- and then what is optimal for their band and travel choices. I could easily see BOA SA attendance being skipped for bands that choose to go to GN, or the standard travel schedules being revamped to allow a lot more homework and rest time, and less practice time during travel- to try and prevent burnout with multiple trips. There is no easy answer or solution - there will probably be multiple ways bands decide on.

As much as we would all love to see these Texas bands at both BOA San Antonio and Grand Nationals, we forget these are kids in high school marching band and not a touring Drum Corps. I can certainly understand many bands opting to do what Flower Mound did last year and skip BOA San Antonio to attend Grand Nationals. To be honest, if I were a director or school superintendent of one of these Dallas area bands that is planning to go to Grand Nationals, I would certainly have the marching band skip BOA San Antonio.

Especially true given the importance of all things UIL in Texas. While it might be easier to participate in SASR and GN than UIL 6A and GN, the state competition is highly valued. If UIL decides to rotate which classes are the week before and week after SASR, I believe we'd see more Texas bands appearing at GN more frequently.

Those kids definitely were going through it, and succeeding still, top half at BOASA, medaling at UIL State, and top half of Grand Nats, crazy results for them, they handled the taxing demands of that week or so of competitions really well! SL Carroll and Prosper were BOTH one judge’s opinion changing in their favor from qualifying for UIL State, which would’ve added a San Antonio trip for them right before Grand Nats, who knows how that would’ve affected their prospects at GN with a State trip immediately prior to Grand Nats, those few more rehearsals in the comfort of their home base in their school definitely made them more competitive for the event in my view, just going about business as usual, while still ramping up improvements and tweaks to the show in rehearsal, the kids got to go home after rehearsal and rest. Incredibly valuable for them, and it showed in their results
