Pearland showed that they deserve to be a consistent finalist here. Absolutely mesmerized by their playing! On that note, HOLY WOODWINDS !!!

Y’all remember how I said the flagwork is a dead giveaway? That and the guard spinning at the end of Pearland’s show is basically one big “Wes Cartwright” signature. That, and the palette lifted straight from Edge of Eternity lol

Thanks to streaming difficulties with box5 I was in and out of hearing pearland, after not having watched them before this either! Right at the very end I hear the “pegasus” tune from Hebron’s 2015 show and I was like oooooh! And then I see their props and it makes perfect sense haha

Round rock low brass is monstrous. Those bass trombones are so menacing

RR percussion Heaven. Woodwinds always moving amazingly. Thanks for the quint-posaun trombone subtitle treat between tenor and bass! So controlled. So subtle yet bringing the power! Amazing performance Tonight!

I say best Round Rock performance I have ever seen. Better than their 4th place performance at nationals 9 years ago.

It finally clicked for me: I think I love Round Rock so much because they're one of the few bands left (maybe the ONLY band left) that's nationally competitive... while performing drill ca. the late 90s/early 00s.
Seriously, watch any Lassiter show from that era (see: 1998, 2001, 2002). It's all just free-flowing, kaleidoscopic drill at 120-140 BPM. Winding, floating curves that break apart and flatten into long lines, then turn into little conveyor belts. Very few forms of travel aside from standard marching. All while playing standard classical pieces with INCREDIBLE musicality and incredible VOLUME.
There's something about the way Round Rock performs that just does it for me. You don't need to add too much "production value" to excellent playing and marching. (And it's all the more satisfying when it's not just windowed grids at on/two off/split the entire time.)
Round Rock's show is one of my favorites of the weekend. Happy to see them back in finals!!

Quietest kept too, RR definitely has had quite the motivation to make a statement after barely missing out on finals at both GN and BOASA last year. They didn’t wanna be a “maybe they’ll be in” band but honestly rn still contending to be in top half after CTJ’s performance. I think they have a shot!

I gotta say, I love the show designs and uniforms in high school marching band much more than recent examples in drum corps.

Flower Mound has cemented itself as one of the best bands for use of color in their designs and the creative ways they showcase soloists. Oh yeah and their pretty good musicians too.

Why didn't program more this year, FloMo??? There was so much but it went by so quickly!
We've got our first podium candidate of the night! Great performance!

The perpetual question of the night from me is "What are they feeding these kids???" Grilled Texas 😎 Well, there WAS the discussion about what barbecue is best on another thread. Many of us said Texas, the others were wrong.

I was worried when I found out The Woodlands would have a new director this year. Not worried anymore. Also, I was uncertain if a color guard could match some of the Avon guard performances in recent years. They did. In fact I will say that was the best color guard performance I have ever seen by a texas band and certainly one of the all time best at any BOA competition.

I can't believe TWHS somehow managed to throw Cowboy Bebop into an Austin Powers/Deee-lite show and make it all work! Not to even mention the inclusion of the absolutely underrated Bad Dog, No Biscuits! Incredible performance!

I've watched Vandegrift several times this season and I can't say I've ever "gotten" it. Like yes, very gridded, very cyber, electronic vibes, etc.... but why? What is the point of view? What is the journey through time? It feels like we arrive somewhere different than we started... but it also feels like 8 minutes of Tron with 45 seconds of upbeat Hymn of Acxiom tagged on the end. It sounds great, but I feel like I'm missing out on something. If anyone has any insight to offer, please do!!
(That being said, I can't see them lower than fifth tonight. Their performance quality is tremendous and the sheer effect of that many bodies on the field performing with such intensity is OUTRAGEOUS!!)

Vandegrift is so good but hearing more than a couple blown releases and some individual visual things is making me think they won’t medal
The Woodlands is just too entertaining and clean for me to think they won’t be top 3, they have SO many amazing soloists
