Phenomenal brass sound out of Miamisburg! This being said I'm not sure how I feel about the Pit and stage taking up so much of the very front and center of the field. It's nice for features but major impacts won't be quite as loud and it's pretty restrictive for the drill

Plymouth's show is so fun. Best of luck to them and go team Michigan!

There's been a time or two recently when Miamisburg has made Semis (or been close) where I *always* acknowledge their visual prowess, but wish they had a fuller, more balanced sound from the winds. They've REALLY honed in on that ensemble sound this season - the group sounded lush and rich! That was really, really nice to hear. Semis bubble for sure with such a deep field, but I think they laid down a pretty airtight case for the top 30. Not the most innovative or interesting show ever, but they execute beautifully across every caption. They really showed off consistency across the board today, in my opinion. Really happy to see their growth into where they are now - great performance today!

After block two, here are my quick thoughts, current panel rankings, and full rankings! These are just subject for fun and my own personal opinion. I'll be taking a break from the live blog as we are tapping in two of the Team Texas contingent that have arrived! Milford - Soooo much improvement as I'd expect from the first time I got to see them from Obetz. That show really has come together and probably one of the best performed shows Milford has ever performed. Very well done! Engaged throughout which means you are doing your job right! Goshen - Having seen them several times this year, it still impresses me how far along this band has improved in one year. I think today's run was a bit looser than last week but still a performance worthy of a semi-finals apperance. Bellbrook - Another loose performance but this is still one of the best Bellbrook groups I've seen in nearly a decade and hope they can really lock in and push their performance level into a real resurgence. Thursday 1. Goshen - 2 2. Bourbon Co. - 1 3. Milford -2 4. Greenfield-Central - 2 5. Anderson Co. - 1 6. Finneytown - 1 7. Norton - 2 8. Bellbrook - 2 9. Avon - 2 10. Tippecanoe - 2 11. John Hardin - 1 12. Hamilton - 2 13. Piqua - 2 14. Christian Academy of Louisville - 2 15. Colerain - 1 16. South Point - 1 17. Monrovia - 2 18. Wilmington - 2 19. Fairborn - 1 20. Carlisle - 2 21. Talawanda - 2 22. Arcanum - 1 23. East Clinton - 1 24. Tipton - 1 25. Bishop Fenwick - 1 Panel 1 1. Bourbon Co. 2. Anderson Co. 3. Finneytown 4. John Hardin 5. Colerain 6. South Point 7. Fairborn 8. Arcanum 9. East Clinton 10. Tipton 11. Bishop Fenwick Panel 2 1.Goshen 2. Milford 3. Greenfield-Central 4. Norton 5. Bellbrook 6. Avon 7. Tippecanoe 8. Hamilton 9. Piqua 10. Christian Academy of Louisville 11. Monrovia 12. Wilimington 13. Carlisle 14. Talawanda I don't get the luxury of only 'judging' certain panels so yeah, it can be hard to really rank so many groups especially when many are so tight with each other. So keep me in check and make sure I don't forget any groups! Thanks y'all and hope you enjoy.

It's nice for features but major impacts won't be quite as loud and it's pretty restrictive for the drill Whereas in my notes I was admiring the challenge the marching members of the band were given by having to perform from behind all that, most notably in the curvy drill shortly before the end of the show. In a very small way, that reminds me of the Reading Buccaneers' 2014 show.

Who else has used this Charlie Chaplin speech from "The Great Dictator" before? I remember the Bushwakers opening with it in 2014, but I feel like another drum corps had used it before that. And any marching bands?

Too bad about BOA's announcer stepping on the end of Campbell County's show.

Campbell County was a wonderful surprise! A terrific group that maxed out a show that was just right for them. I've got them landing in the low 80s. Rock solid in every caption.
PCEP was the opposite - more of a bold, wild, exposed, varied show....but I just don't feel like they had a great handle on it. A fairly spread full ensemble sound. I'm really confused as to why they can't march more than 130 or so the last 5 years - there's 6,200 students on the campus!!!! I'm sure I'm just judging their current execution against their past - yes, some ensemble sounds I didn't love, and overall looser than I'd like, but quite solid in terms of vertical alignment with the music. It's hard for me to see them overcoming the giant swath of groups performing later on to retain their Semis position, but crazier things have happened, and they seemed solid enough in each caption that I wouldn't be totally shocked to hear them called.

Ten extra points if only a wolf had popped out of grandma's house and eaten them at the end, like the shark in Velvet Knights' 1992 show.

MORTON!! Terrific run. Incredibly strong brass sound. Their music performance captions have really reached a new level, and it's extremely impressive. To my eyes, visual execution captions don't quite match the power & mastery that they brought to the field with the music captions this season. Design was fabulous - mature and layered and flows beautifully. Really love seeing how strong Morton is this season. Hard to see that not getting another performance.

According to my own tastes -- and everyone should certainly free to disagree with me -- this is how I would rank the bands in the second block:
1. Goshen (IN) - "City Lights" 2. Milford (OH) - "Masquerade" 3. Greenfield-Central (IN) - "Godspeed!" 4. Bellbrook (OH) - "The Architect" 5. Norton (OH) -- "To Wish Upon" 6. Hamilton (OH) - "Sebastian" 7. Monrovia (IN) - "Life Is Sweet" 8. Avon (OH) -- "...if only it were a dream" 9. Piqua (OH) -- "Heart of Tin" 10. Christian Academy of Louisville (KY) -- "Sanctuary" 11. Wilmington (OH) -- "Luminous" 12. Tippecanoe -- "Beneath the Summer Stars" 13. Talawanda (OH) - "Elevations" 14. Carlisle (OH) - "The Rose"

Yes, the individual execution from all 35 of Archbishop Alter's members, especially musically, is something most bands in the country should envy - but each member's commitment to the performance is just outstanding!! Matched energies and matched attitudes all down the line for the whole show. Absolutely love it!!

I don't know if it's just me, but the multi-cam was really out of sync with the music and I was confused for a good 3 minutes

Omg to the ladies crunching potato chips, rattling bags, cell phone ringing, and loudly discussing other bands during Avon, OH performance. You know who you are… section 244. Geez 🙄 Respect? And to add on, if I may…. To some particular parents or two very large bands that were walking down the stairs and cutting through seats DURING Shawe Memorials performance…shame on you!!

I really loved the last movement of Homestead’s show! I think visual across the board will be their biggest downfall.

Beautiful show from Homestead! Not sure if they made any changes to their show, but I feel like it definitely came alive more today than I remember from past performances.
