Teaching all day and tomorrow, then directing the musical on Saturday. Very excited to be living vicariously through everyone's recaps and reactions!

Bishop Fenwick is very likely our smallest performing group of the event. 14 students.

Anderson county showing us more of that Kentucky small band power. I’m impressed

Really, really enjoyed Anderson County! They've grown a lot, and their show is current & competitive and just great for where they're at. Love the monochromatic tones. Tons of ambitious & aggressive group flag work throughout to propel the show along visually. The group plays very well as a full ensemble - I always wish they would produce a fuller, richer sound, but full ensemble timing is impeccable and they demonstrated excellent range of dynamic control over and over. I just don't think there will be room for them in Semis with this ultra-stacked line up, but I hope they keep attending GN and growing, because I do see them in eventually, and I'm happy they've found success at the Regionals level. I see that performance landing around a 79-81 today.

Not to sound like the basic white girl that this upcoming sentence so clearly demonstrates that I am, but Finneytown really caught my attention with that full band body percussion Fleet Foxes feature to start their show!

Finneytown only recently ventured outside of OMEA. They've progressed nicely the last couple years.

My kids have been out of high school band 5 years now and yet here I am taking off work still to watch bands do their thing. Looking forward to seeing some awesome performances! I’m from Oklahoma so looking for them to represent!

Call me crazy, but I could easily see Finneytown advancing as a Class A band given their panel. I don't know anything about this program but just saw their enrollment would likely put them in Class A.

South Point was a really great surprise as well! Solid, creative show, great clarinet soloist weaved throughout, an ambitious music book. Nicely done!

Once again, for those attending in person, please leave your vuvuzelas and missile-like objects at home. Can I bring my cowbells?

I’m going to be totally honest here. James f. Byrnes has stole my heart. I think they have the best design this year. I think they get top 12. If you haven’t watch their show on YouTube it’s amazing. What a suave show. Great narrative and especially liked the muted trumpets playing backfield. Would love to see them 3 times this weekend!

Great job, Norton! Boy have they grown and matured in figuring out how to design a show that can compete with the other big dogs in A. Super mature & sleek design. I will say it might be a little too hefty of a music book for 40 winds - lots of demand to maintain a great full ensemble sound throughout most of the show; no room for balance or blend errors with such a small roster and few breaks in the show for small ensemble or solo playing! I appreciate the difficulty that that entails, and they mostly achieved it. That build in the ballad was really nice in particular. Visual seems to be Norton's strong caption, though, with all members having a great understanding of individual technique and their own responsibilities. Rock solid 12 member color guard. Apparently both Beechwood & Murray are on fire this year, so we'll see if this performance was enough to top either group; I'd have Norton in the low to mid 70s today. Great show, Norton.

Christian Academy of Louisville was also a solid group. I know they've done a few BOA Regionals & GN here & there but I don't think I've ever caught them; they were nice to see. Great example of a small school/small band design really working well for a group - I think I counted 38 members total, and they had a challenging show that held my interest and highlighted their strengths well. Nice job!

Are you folks watching multicam or high cam tonight?
First time streaming grand nats instead of performing in it so I'm curious what the general consensus is

I think finals will look like this
1. Avon 2. Carmel 3. Broken Arrow 4. Tarpon Springs 5. William Mason 6. Dobyns-Bennett 7. MG Johnson 8. Fishers 9. Brownsburg 10. Prosper 11. O'Fallon Township 12. American Fork
Hendrickson, Rosemount, Castle, JFB, Centerville, and a few others are all fighting for the last three spots or so

Throwing my humble finals predictions out there (which includes a bit of hopefullness). Very likely will be incorrect, but it's fun to play.
1. Avon (M, GE) 2. Carmel 3. Broken Arrow (V) 4. William Mason 5. Tarpon Springs 6. Dobyns Bennett 7. Fishers 8. Moe and Gene Johnson 9. Brownsburg 10. American Fork 11. Mustang 12. Rosemount

First time streaming grand nats instead of performing in it so I'm curious what the general consensus is For me GN is split into two categories: prelims is about the experience and performance, so I watch multicam. It’s great to be able to see the performers’ reactions and small details that you might miss on high cam. Semis and finals is high cam for me - those rounds are more about an appreciation for the designs and ensemble execution.

Hello everyone! I am of course, live blogging with much of the nerd crew as always. I'm always happy to give my quick thoughts as well when I have the chance. So far, the day has been off to a great start! Lots of day left of course. This is the best weekend of the year for me. Love it!
Bourbon Co. - Really came out hot! Much improved from Louisville. Going first will hurt their chances of getting into top 30 on score, but doable. Anderson Co. - Easy to see why they kept pace with Bourbon Co. in Kentucky Class contest. Always a reliably good band and fun to watch! Finneytown - Never has seen them before and knew they got 3rd at Mid-State last weekend behind Kings and Northmont but was still pleasantly surprised by them. Certainly a band to watch for in the future if they continue to venture out. Welcome to BOA! Very nice show. Arcanum - Also a quick shout out to this group for doing their first BOA show as well! Always nice to see new additions to the BOA family. Also also, that's just such an awesome HS name. Norton - After being hit by Covid, it is clear this group is on the rebound. Lovely show and given the right circumstances, could push as a Class A rep, but going on first for a set of judges is never easy. Hope to continue seeing their improvement back to real contender in Class A. Greenfield-Central - Got to see them last week at State Finals where they got 3rd and "won" (I say it that way since no captions are awarded at state) best music. The performance today certainly felt better than last week but in a stacked AA, will it be enough to move on?
And with that, I think we are all caught up!

Greenfield fielded an AMBITIOUS show this season! Tons and tons of demand in that beefy music book. Not always achieved; that ballad hit in Adagio for Tron wasn't what it should have been, and there seemed to be some timing blips throughout. But that's a LOT to line up - they bit off a ton with every aspect of that design this year, and I love a group that pushes their students. I've got them around 80 - I'd say they'd have a shot at class rep if this year weren't so deeply stacked with AA groups. Either way, they should be proud of pulling this show off this season - quite an undertaking.

Based on my stream viewing, here's my ranking of the first block. As usual, this is not a prediction. The judges may prefer things I don't and vice versa:
1. Bourbon County (KY) - "Full Circle" 2. Anderson County (KY) - "Strangers" 3. Finneytown (OH) - "A Winter at the Lake" 4. South Point (OH) - "Wild" 5. Arcanum (OH) - "Sweet" 6. Fairborn (OH) - "Among the Stars" 7. John Hardin (KY) - "Red Line" 8. Colerain (OH) - "My Chosen Path" 9. Tipton (IN) - "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" 10. East Clinton (OH) - "Somewhere Only We Know" 11. Bishop Fenwick (OH) - "The Music of Led Zeppelin"
Finneytown and Arcanum both seemed jittery relative to their OMEA performances last Sunday.

Why did Greenfield Central have their own prerecorded "proud to present" introductory announcement, and why did they play it a minute into their show?

Why did Greenfield Central have their own prerecorded "proud to present" introductory announcement, and why did they play it a minute into their show? An artistic choice within the design.

Not sure American Fork or Prosper, they feel more like the bubble to me. I’m a huge Hendrickson fan this season (saw them at UIL and BOA Austin), and have high hopes for them.
