Congratulations to all the bands and of course the Michigan bands. Jenison is no surprise they made semi finals. They are the best band in Michigan this year. Have to also give a very big congratulations to Plymouth Canton. They have had a drop in membership and were having a bit of a rough season. I dont think anyone had them in semi finals, including me. So give this band some love when they perform tomorrow morning. This was a big achievement for them.

Of those lucky enough to watch, what do you think it was that gave PCEP over the edge over the others?

Of those lucky enough to watch, what do you think it was that gave PCEP over the edge over the others? It was the DeLorean.

Congrats to all the Semi-Finalists, and especially Jenison and PCEP from my home state! While Jenison might be just outside that Finals bubble (might, I’m not counting anybody out yet lol), this is easily the best I have ever seen them, and probably the best the band has ever looked and sounded…including 1992 & 1994, which were their Finals seasons. What a year for them. Hopefully they can build off of this year and continue to trend in the right direction. Macy’s parade next year and hopefully back to Grand Nats in 2024! Can’t wait to see all the performances tomorrow.

Of those lucky enough to watch, what do you think it was that gave PCEP over the edge over the others? I did not see them. The last few years they do better with the BOA judging system than MCBA. Perhaps because they are usually a band that does overall general effect well. They also always manage to peak right at Grand Nationals.

Of those lucky enough to watch, what do you think it was that gave PCEP over the edge over the others? I had Plymouth-Canton in 28th overall. Reviewing my notes again, I see that, apart from comments that were simply descriptive, they almost all indicate something about the show that annoyed me, except that three times I praised their sound and twice the difficulty of what they were doing.

No Marian Catholic is…certainly the end of an era! They’re going to do great things in the coming years though I trust they’ll bounce back.
It’s really just shocking to see such a long reigning band fall out of semifinals, everything must come to an end but it’s still a pain to see it come.

This semi finals group has 16 previous Grand National Finalists and 7 previous Grand National Champions.
Carmel is now the only band to be in Semi Finals every year of its existence.
At current trends, Marian Catholic will be a Class A band in the near future. Dropping enrollment to their feeder programs has been a challenge for them.

Next 8: kiski pcep lakota east grain valley lakota west lincoln way goshen byrnes These bands are NOT the "next 8." They are the "outside 8" meaning they scored 23rd through 30th overall. Two of the bands on this list were among the top 11 from panel 2.

Next 8: kiski pcep lakota east grain valley lakota west lincoln way goshen byrnes Byrnes wasn’t next eight There's a good chance this is true. We won't know for sure whether Byrnes was next 8 or part of the panel 2 top 11 until recaps are released. What we DO know is that Byrnes was not among the top 22 scores overall from prelims.

Byrnes may not have been in the NEXT 8. While they are in the OUTSIDE 8, two of those bands were in the top 11 from panel 2. Don't confuse the Top 22 with the top 11 from each panel - they are not the same thing.

Some analysis (most of which only matters because I'm both a band geek and a data geek).
Thursday - 19 semifinalists, Friday - 15
Every performance block had at least one band advance to semifinals
The third and fourth blocks on Thursday accounted for fully half the semifinalists (9 from the late afternoon/early evening, 8 from the night session) Those blocks included 11 of the top 22 overall and 5 of the outside 8
Thursday block 4 had 7 consecutive performances that made semifinals

What a great way to start the show off! Fantastic job, Murray!
Those brass soloists were very impressive, especially the baritone!

One heck of a performance from Murray to lead off the day. Continually amazed by what that school is able to produce with such few students.

Perhaps but I think what people are most interested in is who were 23-30 because frankly next 8 concept is largely irrelevant at this point unless top 11 bands didn't score top 30 which was not the case. So I'm not sure why you keep mentioning it.

Murray & BoCo are both just absolutely amazing. I think BoCo had a better run today than Prelims, Murray seemed about the same. I think after watching both just now I'd give BoCo the edge for all 3 A captions over Murray, with Murray having the best chance of taking visual.
I could watch both groups all day. It's beyond astounding what both can do!
Time to see if Beechwood or Alter throw a wrench into what I perceive to be BoCo's lead!

But I don't think they're mostly getting it wrong. They are thinking 23-30 when saying next 8 in my read. Just saying let it go. As I will now. Terminology is more important to you than to others and you won't likely change it.

So good!
