Anyone know when they typically start instrumental education in Kentucky?

Murray & BoCo are both just absolutely amazing. I think BoCo had a better run today than Prelims, Murray seemed about the same. I think after watching both just now I'd give BoCo the edge for all 3 A captions over Murray, with Murray having the best chance of taking visual. I could watch both groups all day. It's beyond astounding what both can do! Time to see if Beechwood or Alter throw a wrench into what I perceive to be BoCo's lead! From right by the judges... Murray sweeps the sheets over Bourbon. Beechwood also should be ahead of Bourbon but not by much

Good morning everyone! I hope everyone is ready for a very exciting day for some great bands! As we start, once again I'd like to congratulate all the bands that have advanced to semi-finals. A truly incredible achievement in a year of some very tight and evenly matched shows/programs. But I'm sure some of you are curious what my initial predictions could be so here we go. Before seeing the groups performances today, based on performance slots, and potential, here is how things could play out imo.
Class AAAA 1. Carmel (Music/GE) 2. Broken Arrow 3. Avon (Visual)
Class AAA 1. Dobyns-Bennett (Music/Visual/GE) 2. Hendrickson 3. Castle
Class AA 1. Tarpon Springs (Music/Visual/GE) 2. Jenison 3. Morton
Class A 1. Bourbon County - (Music/GE) 2. Beechwood - (Visual) 3. Archbishop Alter
Finalists: Avon Broken Arrow Carmel Dobyns-Bennett William Mason Tarpon Springs Fishers MG Johnson American Fork Hendrickson Prosper Brownsburg
We'll see how it plays out. I'll give final rankings/predictions of course closer to awards. Good luck everyone!

Hmm....so difficult to know where to place those three. All very different bands with their own strengths. I think Beechwood likely secured Visual. To my eyes & ears, BoCo has Music wrapped up, and a pretty great shot at GE - which is the hardest to call. All 3 had well-designed shows and all 3 performed the snot out of them, and were clearly all-in. How that translates to GE captions is anyone's guess.
If I had to bet, I'd wager:
1st. Bourbon County - Music, GE 2nd. Beechwood - Visual 3rd. Murray
I truly cannot imagine there is more than 3-4 points separating 1st & 3rd.

Anyone know when they typically start instrumental education in Kentucky? Not exactly but I'm going with " earlier than they do in North Carolina".

Bourbon Agree they should all end up scoring within a few points You know I really think they are in the thick of things with the 3 KY groups, more than I thought. Their individual levels of execution, especially in Visual, are just so good!! It was quite a treat seeing all 4 back to back - and a bit of a coin flip for me for results.

This is by far one of the best Class A lineups in years! Absolute stellar musicianship from everyone involved. So glad I woke up early to catch everyone!

We've had a conch solo and an harmonica solo. Will anyone the bigger bands throw such unique soli at us?

Alter has been pulling off for each little nuance so we'll for the tiny band they had. I don't know what Alter put in their potions (talent and hard work for sure!), but the musicianship is so off the charts this year.

The four shows so far were worth the price of admission or a Box 5 subscription. All the rest will be a bonus.

It's so tough trying to predict Class A, but this is what I've got:
1. Beechwood (Visual) 2. Murray (Music) 3. Archbishop Alter (GE) 4. Bourbon County
You could put them in any order and there'd be a good argument for it. I won't be upset who gets the exhibition slot no matter what.

Being a small private school that gets students who would otherwise attend Fairmont, Bellbrook, Beavercreek, Centerville, Miamisburg, and Springboro certainly doesn't hurt.

Some quick research on the KY A schools -
BoCo is by far the largest of the 3; a bit under doubled in size from the other two. Low 800s 9-12. They would be a mid-sized 4A high school in UIL, basically the same size as Celina HS, the recently-crowned UIL 4A state marching band champ. In Indiana, they would be a mid-sized Class C school, almost squarely between Western & Edgewood in size.
Murray & Beechwood are both similarly-sized in the low-mid 400s 9-12. I don't think I had any idea after all these years that Beechwood isn't rural; they're just a little micro school district in the suburbs of Cincinnati on the KY side of the Ohio. Fun fact! Looks like both Murray & Beechwood would be mid-sized 3A schools in UIL, both about the size of Whitesboro, a somewhat-frequent BOA participant, and Mineola, who was 2021's 3A state champ. Both schools would be mid-sized Class D in ISSMA. I couldn't find a direct comparison with numbers for a competitive D group, but both schools are a little larger than Paoli and Lewis Cass.

Kiski's guard is amazing! You can definitely see why they won WGI in Scholastic Open class last spring!

Kiski Area may not be a sure shot for GN Finals anymore, but this is a show that the people back in the '90s and '00s would be so proud of. Unbelievable this was next 8.

None seemed like a "class add on" this year - all 4 were competitive with each other and a terrific little microcosm of a contest to start the day. I have zero complaints about any order they fall in.

Hoooooly Kiski guard. Watch out, World Class. Incredibly effective and performing some very challenging work. The music performance didn't feel quite as controlled as their prelims run to me, but the overall performance is still something to be proud of. That bass clarinet duet is one of my favorite moments of the year. Excited for what's to come from them!

I too am having trouble believing that was bottom 8 on score. What an ELECTRIC performance. By far the best Kiski band that I've been around for, and without parallel. I'd love to see them post a sky high number and work their way into scoring neighborhoods of the later groups, where they seem to belong. They certainly made the case for it this morning.

Good morning!! Frequent guest visits to this board for several years and finally created an account. Yay band!
Love kicking off semifinals with my home state Kentucky! Always presenting a strong batch of “small” groups. After this mornings go I’d put Beechwood just a touch ahead of all 3. Class A Beechwood Murray Alter Bourbon County
Kiski Area!! Holy cow!!! That was AMAZING! Im keeping them in my pocket for a finals run. I love how when they moved the props the yard lines were modified to create a “corner”. So cool! Attention to detail is impeccable!
