This is really disappointing. No Alabama or Georgia means that the options for bands in the South/southeast are the September Chattanooga regional, or to choose between Orlando & ETSU, which are on the same day. And all South Carolina bands in classes A, AA, AAA or AAAA will have to choose between doing this or participating in SC State Championships. Unless dates are added I bet you will only see Wando and Byrnes participating in BoA in any capacity in 2023. It is a shame...

And so, it appears the Class A/AA championships rumor is put off at least one more year? Eyes on the upcoming 50th anniversary GN...format change the following year would be easy to justify

BOA is really wild for making Semi State and Indy Super conflict Very short-sighted. Might open up the opportunity for a first-time SR win for Blue Springs or William Mason (or somebody else).

What happened to the Carolina Regional? 28 Bands and a very competitive finals in 2022. As of now Carolina bands only realistically have the opportunity to go to Mid-Atlantic Regional, ETSU or Orlando all which happen to be on the same day.

BOA is really wild for making Semi State and Indy Super conflict We'll see how much cooperation there is between the two event organizers to enable groups to do both. It's easy enough to get all of those Indiana bands in prelims on Friday, but still the ISSMA Saturday schedule could make certain groups getting to Finals problematic unless ISSMA suspends the normal scheduling procedures. Semistate usually runs until, what...6 pm or later? I'm not sure what time a group would need to leave Ben Davis in order to be at Lucas in time for a potential 1st group in Finals slot.

This might be a long shot, but is it possible that we could see a SC Band or 2 make the trek to St. Louis? 1A through 4A bands in SC have a 2 weekend State Championships cycle. Upper/Lower State on the 3rd weekend of October, with the top 8 from Upper and top 8 from Lower progress to state finals on the 4th weekend of October. 5A (the 24 largest schools in SC) have a single weekend prelims/finals state championships show on the first weekend of November. The schedule in 2023 only realistically negates a couple schools like Catawba Ridge and Nation Ford, who are both in 4A in SC, from participating in BoA. Everyone else in SC can go somewhere on the 21st and be perfectly fine, it is just an unfortunate circumstance for those 2 programs.

A band performing at 7:00 p.m. enters the competition flow to warmups at 5:50 p.m. so I would expect them to be unloading their truck(s) at 5:00 p.m. Ben Davis isn't terribly far so allowing for a little traffic they could conceivable depart as late as 4:30 (if cutting it close is an option) meaning they would need to finish performing by 3:45 at the latest. That means the first half of Class A semi-state performance order only should the traditional schedule still apply. Class B at Pike would be similar timing but it's a little farther out so it might require even a little earlier should any of those schools be in the conversation (and any ISSMA Class B bands that made Indy SR finals would be very likely to be in the bottom half draw).

Carmel and Avon can easily do both. They are typically first half at semi state so will perform before 330. Then they will skip awards to be downtown tie perform last half of finals.

I’ll be real, I think Blue Springs has deserved a SR win for some time. Not to say Broken Arrow hasn’t…but it’s about time for Blue Springs.

Ben Davis started at 1:00 pm this year with Brownsburg. The last band was Castle at 6:45 pm. I don't know what logistical issues would need to be solved in order to make it happen, but I could imagine Ben Davis starting at 11am or even earlier, moving everyone 2 hours earlier.

Is it just me, or does it feel like saying “semi state” feels weird and clunky?😂

It's disappointing, but finding a consistent, reliable, affordable site host in the Carolinas has been difficult for several years now. Same problem with California.

Having only one show on 10/14 is a really odd outlier on the schedule.

Don't think I can make any regionals this year, but I should be able to watch some on Box5 (if it doesn't catch on fire again).

Yeah, even moving the start to 11 AM wouldn't give ample time for those groups at the end (4 pm or later potential performance times). They would either need to start even earlier (9 AM?) or be creative with the scheduling to front load potential BOA finalists. And then how do you determine who is a potential finalist? And who decides? It will be interesting to see if groups decide on skipping the Indy Super. I can't see groups skipping State for the Super Regional though.

It will be interesting to see if any 6A Oklahoma schools attend the St Louis Super Regional since that is the weekend that we traditionally have our 6A state marching contest.

I propose that all states adopt the UIL system and hold (at least some of) their events on weekdays. That way, the bands so inclined (and successful enough) can participate in both state competition AND BOA. Seems to work pretty well for the Texas heavy-hitters in San Antonio.

UIL can get away with weekday events because it's so part and parcel with the school system in general. Basically no other statewide marching circuit has full the backing of the state government (and local athletics) so I feel that the pushback on an all day weekday event would be a lot stronger elsewhere.
