FYI on that Eastview video, that was their home show on the 9th. It was not a full show, they had more at the Rosemount competition on the 16th.

And since we're using Brandon Valley as a barometer, here's at Pursuit of Excellence Thank you for these videos! Was very curious to see how Brandon Valley's show had progressed with the ending added on and man, now I'm really annoyed they can't be at Waukee. They definitely would be in medalist conversation here, and would have given Camdenton a good battle in Class AA. Musically, this is their best arranged show I've seen from them. Ward Miller really knocked it out of the park and the students are doing an amazing job performing it (an aside but Ward is great, he's done the music arrangement for RCR since their inception and is an all-around good dude.) It's been 5 years since Brandon's first and only appearance at a BOA event (2018 BOA Indy Super Regional), which was also the same time their current director, Tyler Nettestad, came on board. To see the growth that Brandon has gone through under his and Devon Melillo's leadership within those 5 years is absolutely astounding and is a real testament to their leadership.

Definitely second everything you said. Tyler Nettestad is an all around great guy and I actually was lucky enough to be at Lincoln when he was doing his student teaching back in 2010. After seeing how he formed the program at Lennox in the mid 2010s, I knew Brandon Valley got a great one when he came on board. Also, if Brandon Valley doesn't go to a super regional soon, that would be an absolute travesty because they would easily be in finalist conversations for both Indianapolis and St. Louis this year were they to have gone. COME BACK TO BOA, BRANDON VALLEY, PLEASE!!!

Can confirm the “Fly to Paradise” count here is 1. Last minute closer adjustments for one group due to copyright issues. 🙃

Camdenton is missing from the program list. Website issue? I would be shocked to see them pull out…
Edit: must be an issue on the website because there’s a trip sheet out. Classic music for all web programming I guess 🥹

I want to put Rock Island in finals, but bless it, their performance at Geneseo that I found on YouTube from last weekend wasn't great. A lot of uncharacteristic brass sound, and A LOT of marchers continuing into their dots 3, 4 counts after a halt.

We have two schools at this regional with the word Valley in their name that both have the same show title "Welcome to the Jungle." I don't know what the odds of that happening are but I thought it was a funny coincidence.

Which I think would be a shock to everyone if they won AAAA - Lake Park hasn't made semis at Grand Nationals since 2013, and haven't made finals at a regional since 2011.

Which I think would be a shock to everyone if they won AAAA - Lake Park hasn't made semis at Grand Nationals since 2013, and haven't made finals at a regional since 2011. It only lends credibility to the fact that BOA's classification system is in need of a change. So many of these regionals have few participants in certain classes. Why can't BOA be nimble enough to combine all of them into an 'Open Class' for regionals and then restructure into four classes at their big event?

A reminder to anyone attending this event. Stop and say hello to Allohak and myself at band entry/exit. If you can't get to us at field level or get our attention from the stands, try from above on the pedestrian bridge that links stadium entrance and concessions to the stands.

Day before competition, super excited for these bands but unfortunately I won’t be there live. My predictions are similar to bigtrombone but here are a few of my thoughts on the top bands. First I want to start with the premise that watching the past weeks BOA competitions, and the surprises that happened, judges seems to be leaning towards cleanliness more than rigor, i.e. Rouse over Vandy, Richland over Clovis. I know this is subjective, but this is my non-director/commoner’s observation. I’m still surprise about Lincoln placing 2nd in Marshall. They are the cleanest of all the top bands here, that’s why I was originally leaning towards them winning again before last weekend. Their advantage is a great brass line and their show design relies a lot on them. The visual demand is similar to last years show, but the overall flow is not as seamless, I feel there’s too much fillers. I saw Rosemount live in Eastview and I was just wowed. Their soloist mics did not work, and they did not have their closer yet, but their ensemble power, tone, and clarity was top notch. And yes bigtrombone that includes their brass line. Visual and body works great as usual. But then watching later videos of mostly football halftime shows, albeit bad NFHSnetwork sound, they did not look/sound as great. So I’m concern with which Rosemount we’ll see tomorrow. They did beat BV by almost 4 points, not a good basis from 3 weeks ago I know, still I’m leaning towards them winning their first BOA Regional. Did not see Camdenton, other than their football halftime show background sound and videos. All I can say is I like Elton, and if their music included “Rocketman” they are winners to me already. Eastview and Pella have similar shows that are centuries apart. See what I did there. Both will be fan favorites, but I’m curious how BOA judging will score them. That said, Eastview’s full ensemble sound, particularly their winds, has improve tremendously in the last couple of years. Pella has always been great in the local regional competitions, so it will be interesting to see how they do in BOA. Have a great time everyone!

Lincoln's brass line has immensely improved in the last year, and I'm very excited about that. A couple of weeks ago they had a clinic with one of Blue Devils' current brass techs who was recommended by BD's current director and I think it's helped them a lot. It's worth noting that they did tie with Brandon in Brass at Marshall. Colorguard is still just as good as ever. I'll stand by what I said about Rosemount's high brass though admittedly my perception of them may have been skewed due to the bad audio quality (I too also watched the NFHS stream). Unfortunately, I will not be able to be at Iowa to see them live so I'll have to rely on the Box5 audio, but will get to see them live in Sioux Falls next weekend. This is something I would love to eat my words on.

What were your thoughts on Bellevue West last Saturday? After Lincoln's surprise 2nd place finish, I almost forgot that Bellevue West (another potential top-half finalist) was also in attendance and I would love to hear your input on the "unicorn" show and what to expect from them tomorrow. Bottom half of finals might be, well, interesting to say the least. I know scores across shows are subjective but Waukee Northwest beat MOC-Floyd Valley pretty handily (margin was I think around 1.5-2 points) at the Wildcat Classic two weeks ago, but then this past weekend MOC-Floyd Valley won the Titan Invitational and was 9 points ahead of 9th(!) place Bellevue East. Definitely something to keep an eye on tomorrow.
