I’m not much of a commenter, but I like to pretend I belong I currently live in Indiana, born and raised, but lived out west for 12 years. I marched for Homestead High School (Fort Wayne) from 1989-1992. I was in the guard those years in class B when we were 5th, 2nd, then 2nd and in class A the shocking 1st. My mother refused to pay for Phantom Regiment when I graduated, and after phone calls (no internet in those days), I found Star of Indiana was $20 per camp. So I showed up in Bloomington for the December camp only to find a note on the school’s entrance that said there would be no summer corps, but stay for an indoor option. I left. I’m still pissed and that was 26 years ago. I went on to teach at Carroll HS 1994-1996 and Bishop Dwenger HS 1997-2000 (Seth I’m pretty sure I taught your wife how to spin). I then taught Los Gatos in CA for 2 years, helped out with various groups with my Blue Devil friends while absorbing their techniques (James Logan, Live Oak, BD open, BD A) from 2000-2003. I also taught Tigard HS in Oregon for 5 years. I retired after birthing children. My sister marched HHS 1993-1997 with their 3-peat wins in class A. I’m married to a Blue Devil soprano player who marched their C, B, and A corps from 1992-2000. My son is graduating from Homestead this year and is auditioning for DCI this summer. His ultimate aim is Blue Devils like his dad. Our best friend (former visual caption head at a few corps) says Scouts are on the up and up, so we are trying to get him to audition there as well. I can’t wait to continue to watch my children continue in the marching arts.

Yes, she she hung out for the years previous when her brother was in the band. She spun wayyyyyyy before she was a freshman. I tried to get her in as an alternate for a few years, but it was a no go 😉 Guard was in her soul from like the 2nd grade! Ask her, she knows me. I taught her with my sister.

I guess it sounds impressive, but honestly I don’t feel like it’s much. My husband still techs, I have kids now growing up with the marching arts, and I’m watching from the sidelines. I miss teaching so much, but I couldn’t hang with routines these days. I can tech like a beast though!

Loving hearing about everyone’s experiences. I have no band experience first hand- just parent experience with kids doing band and now guard. Love hearing about how things have changed.

I’m always up to talk about my band organization whenever I get the chance, so here goes:
1.) I’m from the state of Mississippi
2.) In currently in the DeSoto Central High School band program, and have been since 2017. I have all plans to continue marching and performing with the band until I graduate and I have really enjoyed my time in band
3.) I’ve never marched DCI or any other major marching organization. I have been interested but I will probably end up sticking to high school and soon to be college marching band
4.) A couple of our accomplishments: •4 Time State Champions (2 1A Championships and 2 6A Championships) and multiple Runners-Up •Multiple Time BOA Regional Finalists at competitions such as Clarksville, Jacksonville, Powder Springs, and Louisville •First Mississippi Band Program to make Semi Final Competition at BOA Grand Nationals (probably our biggest feat) •Multiple Time Runners-Up in the Bandmasters Championship in Memphis at the Liberty Bowl Stadium •And many local competition wins and runner-ups around our county
As far as concert band, we’ve made Superior Ratings 10 years in a row, earning our tenth one last year in April. They call it “Sweepstakes Awards”.
But yeah that’s about it. I feel like we are a little overlooked when it comes to BOA competitions and maybe this next season we can break out as a major competitor. Thanks for reading!

DeSoto Central is great! One of the few bands in Mississippi that I know much about, but I've been impressed with what I've seen! Good luck to you and your band and it's great to have you here.

Hello!
I live in Texas
I marched with my school, Lumberton HS Mighty Raider Band, from 2015-2019.
I did not do anything with DCI or winter percussion/guard. I played the Alto Sax so I didn't want to learn a new instrument.
So, as far as I know, the Lumberton band wasn't a thing until the 70's, the school was established in 1967. throughout the 70's the band wasn't really all that. It wasn't until 1981 when the band made it to state for the first time. After that year, the band was good but not good good. In the 90's the band got small as the town got smaller but several years later town got bigger, so the band got bigger. During those years, they got a new band director who would turn Lumberton around for the next 22 years he was there. From 2001 to about 2015, the band grew, got new uniforms, got a new head director, got very close to going back to state at least 6 times (all 6 times Lumberton usually ended up at 5th, always less than a point away from state). It wasn't until 2016 when Lumberton started making a name for themselves. That year we had a great Marching Show. In our last competition, we got 2nd overall with Best Music out of 28 bands from 3 states. We were only a point from beating a former Grand National Finalist. Sadly after that amazing day, We found out that a band parent from OUR organization stole over 70,000 dollars from our Band booster bank account. We made the news for the opposite for what we wanted to be on there for. We didn't wait long until we got back up and worked heard for the rest of that year. In 2017, Hurricane Harvey destroyed Lumberton, over half of the town lost everything, and yet we worked our butts off, and after 36 years between the last time we went to state, Lumberton made State in 2017. It just happened to be that our show that year was entitled Above and Beyond. In 2018, we moved down a conference, and had the chance to go to state again, and we did! We got 12th out of 23 which was better than our 30th out of 35 the year before even though those were 2 separate conferences. Our winter percussion and winter guard got 2nd and 3rd at state respectfully. 2019 was kind of a let down only because the show wasn't 100% developed, granted the band director's wife got cancer before the school year so he wasn't around for most of that season but overall the band did great. Sadly, his wife passed out from cancer on April 1st of this year. Now up until 2019, the band has never done a BOA competition, although they were going to do BOA Houston but didn't. I am really hoping Lumberton participates in BOA in the future. Yes, I know, my band is not as competitive as the other bands on here but I'm praying that my former director brings Lumberton to the BOA World.

Not being from Texas and mostly following BOA, I have not heard of Lumberton until today. After reading this, I will be hoping to see Lumberton in a BOA competition in the future and will certainly be rooting for them.

I currently live in Austin, TX and go to college in the west Texas city of Abilene I was in the Westwood (TX) marching band from 2013-2016 (class of 2017). I have not marched drum corps yet, but I have auditioned before and plan to march my ageout year next summer. I currently march in the ACU Big Purple, where I also am studying music education. Before my time, Westwood band started up with the school in the 80s and was never a major player in any circuit. at some point, the band began to fall off and by the mid 90s it was almost about to collapse. Jim Van Zandt came to the school in 1996 to take over as head director and built the program back up to be a strong program. He retired in 2001, leaving the director from my years there at the reigns. The band remained strong, competing at BOA San Antonio in 1999 and 2000, but still missing finals by a decent margin. In the late 00s, a new director came along as assistant (now head) and started a journey of growth in the marching band. In 2012, Westwood was named State Alternate, falling behind our district rival, Round Rock, by a single point. My time at Westwood were very historic years for the band. In 2013, we had competed at the first BOA Austin (and our first BOA since 2000) where we placed 13 out of 27 bands at a hefty (but not too hefty) 4 points away from 10th place (finals was rained out). Our last performance of the season was at the Duncanville Marching Invitational where we made finals fairly easily, but got rained out just as we were about to take the field to perform (sounds kinda like 2018's wet season, doesn't it?). In 2014, we went back to BOA Austin with our (in)famous golf show, this time placing 12 out of 25 and only 3.4 points out of finals. Our highlight of the season was for the first time in Westwood Band's history, making state in what was considered quite a major upset ahead of Hendrickson and Round Rock. At state, we placed 13th, which far exceeded our expectations. 2015 was another historic year for the band, this time placing 13th again and 3.6 points out of finals at BOA Austin, but our moment was later in the season at BOA Atlanta, where for the first time in school history we made BOA finals (9th overall). Our finals performace at Atlanta was my highlight because our prelims run was atrocious due to confusion with the prop team, we were crushed. However, we made it to finals and gave the most energetic run of our lives, which even led to one of the band directors saying "Y'ALL KICKED [expletive]" in front of the entire band. 2016 was a less historic year, but we did kick off the season 12th out 31 bands at Austin, this time only 0.7 points away from finals. We ended up as state alternate once again this season, being edged out by Cedar Ridge at 5th and one or two bands short from achieving a 1 at region to have a 6th group advance. Our last performance of the season however was in the Alamodome, making our long-awaited return to BOA San Antonio after 15 years of absence. Since I graduated, they made BOA finals once again in 2017 at St. Louis and were projected to make finals at BOA Waco (whoosh) in 2018. In 2018, I was a tech during the summer for Westwood as well. I plan on teching again this summer, but at a different band in the Austin area (I've got my eyes on a few in Leander ISD). Thanks for the history lesson. I got involved in the Westwood program when my daughter, on a dare, tried out for guard. It was the end of her freshman year and she thought, "Why not?" I'm now the announcer for Westwood, while my kid does guard going into her senior year. Thomas Turpin and crew are awesome and I adore them!

I loved reading all these, although I don't have nearly the experience most do.
1) I grew up in Indianapolis, IN and currently reside in Avon, IN.
2) I was in a small private school band(Roncalli) from 89-92. I played clarinet my freshman year,, and for concert band. My sophomore through senior year i was Drum major and out of 4 years 1 time won best drum major award at a Westfield competition lol. I played alto sax for pep band and bari for jazz band just to try new things out. My junior year i also tried winter guard for 2 yrs. I was terrible on rifle!
I never did drum Corp as I only knew wood wind and definitely was not very good at guard. But every chance we got my friends and I would go down to Bloomington to watch Star of Indiana.
I have a daughter who is a Senior at Avon high school and has been in their guard program since 7th grade. I also started volunteering at WGI in Dayton just for the love of it. I'll be quite sad after this year ends.
Enjoy learning from you all!!

I was born and raised in Austin, Texas....and I am still here!
I attended Westlake HS (TX) from 1997-2001. I played the Bassoon (1st chair District/Region Band/Orchestra a couple years) and was in Color Guard for marching season (Guard Captain - can't recall which years). My son is currently on the Drum Line at James Bowie HS (TX). 2018-2022 My step-son plays Tuba/Sousaphone at James Martin HS (TX). 2017-2021
I attended George Mason Univ. near Washington D.C. for a dance degree and sadly did not follow my dream to join DCI. My son will be auditioning for Genesis this year. My step-son will be auditioning for Santa Clara Vanguard this year. They both have high hopes of many years with the DCI circuit.
I have the best of memories with Westlake HS. Randall Brownlee was our new Color Guard instructor when I started and it was an absolute joy to work with him. He really propelled our program in a big way with his show design for Marching Band and Winter Guard. We had LONG marching seasons since our football team was regular State Champions during those years. I now see both of our boys performing under the Alamodome just as I did so many years ago. Pretty magical.
Happy to be amongst all you marching band and music lovers!!
I am happy to report that both boys marched with DCI for the 2021 season. My son marched with Compass Drum & Bugle on their Bass Drum line this year. My step-son marched with the Crossmen Drum & Bugle on the Contra line this year. Happy to be back and watching all the great marching shows again!!! Cheers!

I live in Indiana and am a parent of an Avon High School Senior who is in his fourth year. He's marched for marching and indoor seasons each year. This was our first experience with marching arts but we jumped in with both feet and have been extra involved since day 1. We will be sad when this year is over but he does plan to audition for DCI.

I grew up in Washington State and marched 2002-2005 with the Evergreen High School Marching Band. It was among the best bands in the area for about a decade. Not a lot of BOA groups in the northwest, although back in the 80s and early 90s, it was more common to see groups compete.
I marched Oregon Crusaders ‘06, Cascades ‘07, and Blue Devils from ‘08-‘10. I also taught the Troopers and Cascades for 5 years after aging out.
I moved to Ohio in 2014 and have taught 8 groups in the state, and have written for a few others. Most notably, I was at Lakota East when they made semi finals in 2018.

Been part of the Elizabeth High School Minutemen Band from 2016-2020 in Central Joisey. lul . The city of Elizabeth has one community college, four private schools, and 7 (Edit: Now 8) houses: Thomas A. Edison & Technical Academy, Frank J. Cicarell Academy, William F. Halsey, Jr. Health & Public Safety Academy, Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy, Academy of Finance, John Dwyer Technology, and Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy, JVJ STEM Academy, which are dealing with overcrowding issues and has over 7.2K students overall.
EHS has won 26 Championships in five different competitive circuits (NJMBDA, USBands, EMBA, TOB, and CMBC) since the start of 1977
2020: We only had the one competition for v-USBands for COVID reasons and ended up getting 4th place out of the 5 bands in Division 3, even with the weeks we missed.
2019: Elizabeth did our personal best this year. Making BOA finals for the second time and getting our *highest placement in BOA (6th place)*. In addition, we had an unbeatable season in USBands winning our first V Open Class State Championships on a Wednesday. Including beating Hillsborough and Passaic for the first time that I've been in the band, but before 2016 we have defeated them also, winning USBands NJ Regional both in Prelims and Finals for our last competition.
USBands NJ States V Open: 93.300: Elizabeth 92.450: Hillsborough 91.900: Edison 91.200: Passaic
USBands NJ Regional - Prelims 95.250: V Open :Elizabeth 94.500: V Open :Passaic 92.000: V Open :Edison 91.300: VI Open :Westfield 90.800: III Open :Bridgewater-Raritan 90.700: III Open :Roxbury 90.500: VI Open :John P. 2018: It was our first year in the Group VI Open everyone pretty much stayed with the same placements the whole season. 4th was Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 3rd was us, 2nd was John P. Stevens, and 1st was South Brunswick, usually 2 points ahead of JPS. In our fourth time in BOA we ended up getting the unlucky number 11 again, but 3rd in class 2A and losing to Westfield (NJ) for tenth.
A week after was our VI Open States it was moved to a Sunday (10/27) after a Northeastern system hit on Saturday, and JPS dropped out of the race. We had mediocre run-through, and for South Brunswick, it wasn't even a competition.
VI Open: 97.038: South Brunswick 94.825: Elizabeth 90.938: Scotch Plains-Fanwood
2017: Elizabeth mainly does USBands, but in 2017 we changed our tune focusing on TOB. Plus, we didn't compete in BOA. It was more like a rebuilding year after 2016. For our first two competitions, we beat Sayreville War Memorial HS and Metuchen HS with more than a 6 point difference getting first place. However, in the next two comps. we lost to Ramsey and Brick Memorial. Ended up getting the last place in our USBands NJ States hitting the 90 marks. (USBands) NJ States V Open: 93.600: Hillsborough 92.487: West Orange 92.188: Passaic 90.625: Elizabeth
For our last comp. it was (TOB) Atlantic Coast Championships @ Hershey Park Stadium in PA ended up getting 9th out of 10th IV Open 98.25: Brick Memorial (NJ) 97.30: Cab Calloway (DE) 95.80: West Shore (PA) 95.20: Musselman (WV) 94.35: Appoquinimink (DE) 93.60: Pennsbury (PA) 92.65: Linganore (MD) 92.25: Caesar Rodney (DE) 91.90: Elizabeth (NJ) 89.95: Ramsey (NJ)
2016: Arguably the worst year for EHS. We had a huge influx of new rookies, and some were very young. We won one competition in the entire season, and it was with ourselves. Getting the last place trophies for most of the competitions, and the only band we could beat was Immaculata HS until Nationals hit. We got our lowest score & placement this year in Elizabeth history @ *BOA (20th place - 68.7).*
USBands NJ States V Open: 96.200: Passaic 94.475: Bridgewater-Raritan 93.750: Hillsborough 91.663: Elizabeth 90.688: Immaculata
For our last competition, it was Nationals this year was the last time we competed in Nationals we got 10th place out of 11th getting our lowest score in V Open Class Nationals 97.063: Dartmouth (MA) 96.800: Mechanicsburg Area Senior (PA) 96.725: Passaic (NJ) 96.075: West Shore (PA) 94.725: Cheshire (CT) 94.013: Newtown (CT) 93.825: Hillsborough (NJ) 93.338: Smithfield-Selma (NC) 92.825: Immaculata (NJ) 92.075: Elizabeth (NJ) 90.000: Wethersfield (CT)
2015: First time making BOA Finals *Highest Score (Prelims- 73.80)* USBands V Open NJ State Silver medalist and best percussion USBands V Open National Championships: 9th place out of 14 bands

Hi all! Little late to the party but I just recently discovered this forum!
I was born, raised, and still live in the mountain state of WV! I attended Princeton Senior H.S. and was a part of their band for all four years (2015-2018).
I haven't been a part of any DCI groups but did have the dream of auditioning for one. I'm still very much an avid follower and try to attend the NightBeat competition in Winston-Salem, NC every year!
As for my school's band, I can't say much about its history. We've never participated in BOA or any circuit, just competed in local competitions throughout southern WV / southwest VA, so most of our history wasn't recorded. We did face off against Russell County H.S. (KY) my junior year, and have always competed against Cabell Midland H.S., WV (they were at GN 2018-2019). We always scored within the top three at all the local competitions we attended, but I'm not sure how much of a feat that is in the grand scheme of things. Despite my lack of involvement with BOA, I've been a huge fan of the circuit since 2017 when I found a video of Hebron's show that year in my recommended list on YouTube. Ever since that video I've been hooked - coming from a smaller band in the middle of nowhere, I never knew high school bands could be so phenomenal. I'm truly in awe of what high schoolers are able to achieve and am surprised every year with the level of musicianship and performance they bring to the BOA events. Almost makes me jealous I was never able to be a part of groups like that!

Back then bands just did not perform like the top level BOA bands of today. So I too get a little jealous of these top level bands of the last few years. Even though we have not had a West Virginia band in Grand National Finals, there have still been WV bands that have made their mark on BOA. I can think of Greenbrier East in the 90s and Paden City and Parkersburg in the early 1980s, just to name a few.

(Or a meeting place if the kids are visiting without me/coming home 😎)

Didn't Greenbrier East make semifinals one year? They were first runner-up in the state championship just back in 2019 (second only to Cabell-Midland)!

I can't complain though, it's brought a wider array of restaurants to the area, even if they're all still mostly fast food 😂

Hey all...
I've lived in Illinois my whole life, and I am currently a Sophomore at Eastern Illinois University
I marched clarinet [So no drum corps] at Collinsville HS [IL] from 2016-2019 [Class of 2020]. Shows: 2016- Hello...Goodbye [9 ft doors, pretty cool show] 2017- The Rite of Red [Worst year competitively, Probably my favorite music book, though] 2018- What Dreams May Come [Eurythmics closer, better competitively] 2019- One Step Closer [Copy of Blue Springs South 2018, but good show. Lot of fun, lot of success]
The band was formed in 1930, under the direction of Franklin Kreider, and had a significant amount of success, at least on the concert band front, winning 3 consecutive National titles in '38, '39, and '40. After Mr. Kreider's retirement, the band regressed some in terms of success, and from then until the early 2000's I don't have much information unfortunately. I do know that the marching band existed in a competitive setting, and had moderate success in the local circuit in the mid-2000s. Their first BOA event, to my knowledge, was the 1999 St. Louis Regional, where they finished in 19th place. My tenure was of moderate success, with my senior year being our most competitively successful season, finishing 1st in class several times at local competitions over the years, Top 3 in Class at University of Illinois Competition [Sorta State Championship, not a direct equivalent in Illinois] my sophomore and junior year and finishing 40th at BOA St. Louis my senior year. Also went to Nats my junior year, which was fun, even though we unfortunately only went for about 4 hours after our performance before driving home.

Hello! 1. Oklahoma 2. Union 1987-1990, and now BA parent 2018-2021 3. No 4. High school band memories... Union's shows 1987-1990... No props, but we sure filled the field with a lot of jazz runs. Our percussion & color guard were phenomenal. 1987: Carnival Overture, Scheherazade, Flight of the Bumblebee, Swan Lake * 1988: Carmen *#1989: Don Juan, Toccata & Fugue *#1990: Spartacus *Beat BA at State, #Placed 11th then 9th at GN Music that still makes my heart cry - Khachaturian's Adagio from Spartacus, which was also in BA's 2014 FaceMe show. Haha - Spartacus? show ending, at one point, had us going up into the bleachers to die. A new rule was made, and this was quickly changed to us dying on the field. Holiday Bowl 1988 - We and other bands were combined for a musical performance, with a long field rehearsal. It seems like the director in charge was drunk, and we got bored to the point of all swapping instruments. He said we sounded wonderful. I'm so glad one of my kids is also in marching band, I'm proud of The Pride of Broken Arrow, and I love the camaraderie among marching band kids & alumni. 2018: THE United States of America - my personal favorite. 2019: Yee Haw - another fun one. 2020: The Show Must Go On (Queen) - in which BA declared themselves National Champions, haha. 2021: ?! ... sounds good, whatever it is!
Band kids call me Mom.
