So for those who follow the Indiana Marching Season/ISSMA, what does having semi-state on the same weekend as the Indy Super Regional mean exactly? I mean I don't expect bands like Avon or Carmel to not come but could we see less Indiana bands than usual?

I mean I don't expect bands like Avon or Carmel to not come but could we see less Indiana bands than usual? Avon and Carmel are expected to attend as long as they perform on Friday (which is a given) and they perform early on Saturday. In fact, most Indy-area bands are expected to attend either way as the semi-state draw tends to favor those furtherest away and not those around Indy. That being said, this is a question mark for Homestead and Castle. I'm pretty sure Homestead will more than likely use their NW Ohio money for logistics in Indy (i.e. performing on Friday, staying overnight, performing semi-state, finally Indy Super). Castle may make it work- they won't be going to GN in 2023, so they'll likely prioritize Indy Super so their kids have an opportunity to perform inside before state finals. However, I'm much more concerned about the enrollment of the B/C/D bands not located around Indy. Most of these bands cannot or do not want to make the bus logistics work at all- semi-state is such an important event for many of these bands that I can't see most wanting throw in Indy Super and risk fatigue. As such, I think we'll see a decreased enrollment overall from the Indiana bands this year.

I'm not blaming BOA for this, by the way. The dates were likely agreed ahead of time before FFA decided to change theirs. BOA is just kind of caught between a rock and a hard place.

While Indiana attendance might be down, I do think we'll see some good attendance here for finalist caliber bands, possibly on the same level as 2018. Some Upper Midwestern bands will likely make the trip (Rosemount is already confirmed), Ohio will likely have William Mason, Centerville, and one or both of the Lakota schools attending, Kentucky should have good representation though some might choose to go to Johnson City, and there is the possibility that Blue Springs attends ahead of their next Grand Nationals appearance, as well as a stray top-tier Oklahoma band such as Owasso, Union or Jenks (though with OBA 6A likely to be this weekend, I'm not as confident about that happening). As dbalash mentioned in the 2023 schedule thread, ISU is also that weekend so we'll probably see few Illinois bands attend. Franklin I could also see attending but they might also go to Johnson City.

Kentucky should have good representation... Most likely not. That weekend is almost certainly the first round of our State Championship series. Lafayette (and any other KMEA 5A group) can attend as their class is too small to need quarterfinals, and you might get some of the ‘State is rigged!’ conscientious objectors from the smaller classes… but as you might imagine, they’re not really our best groups. I’m thinking Lafayette, maybe Campbell County… then not much else of interest.

I don't think that's the issue for a group like Homestead. They performed on Friday at the Indy Super this season and past seasons, and they don't stay overnight. They are only two hours away. The issue for Homestead is the potential semistate performance time. Unless ISSMA makes concessions for scheduling I don't know how a group like Homestead could commit to the Indy Super, since the semistate schedule isn't released until a week prior. Homestead perfomed at 6:45 or something last year. Even starting semistate two hours earlier, a late time slot like that would prohiibit a Homestead or Castle for making an early finals slot at Indy. Avon and Carmel, with early blocks at semistate, can comfortable make it.

Right now, it looks like Castle will be attending both competitions. Very interesting. Of all of the groups attending, Castle is the one almost assured of a late performance slot at semistate under the traditional ISSMA scheduling format. I wonder if there have been some preliminary discussions of possible changes to accommodate both competitions. Possibly semistate staring considerably earlier?

I'm interested to see if they announce anything after the ISSMA Marching Band Committee meets at the end of February, or if they wait until after the State meeting in May....
