Little tidbit: Apparently, this will be Sebastian River’s last season as a competitive marching ensemble, as their new head director will very likely be transitioning the program to more of a “show band” style ensemble in 2024 and beyond. While I’m not sure how the majority of the kids and parents feel about this, if you’re gonna be at the Orlando show bright and early, be sure to give them a little extra love from the stands! Please remember to cheer real loudly for these kids if you happen to be here early. They really need it.

These 4:00 AM mornings are a killer for me. One of the negatives living out west. 🙂

That was the most smoke/Fog I've seen come out of a volcano show.

I wasn’t aware that Sebastian has had yet another director change. So much instability in this program the last five years. Knowing the two Indian River county high school band programs (Vero Beach and Sebastian), I don’t see this change. Parents and students will not go for this. Here is Sebastian seven years ago. So much change. I hope that things becomes more stable for this program.

The move to make the band non-competitive has been on the principal’s agenda for a while. Everyone in the band program, save for the new head director hired by the principal, is absolutely over it. Really hope these kids can find new and better administrative leadership down the road.

Vero had some growth numbers wise this year and Sebastian looks to have dropped once again. Both seem to be hurt by Covid.

The wind is a little bothersome but I swear it seems like all preliminaries are windy these days. All of the bands in the warm up area sound great. I had to help move some Byrnes props and will be heading into the stadium now…commentary will follow.

So James F. Byrnes…a definite improvement over last week’s prelim. I was glad to see the actual completed show. It’s clear they only had a few practices with part 4. But they looked clean visually. Their sound, although fairly clean, was a little tired but I expected that since they had delay after delay getting here and probably didn’t sleep well (I mean they are teens lol). Woodwinds were improved from last week. High brass seemed a little timid but at least they didn’t overplay. Overall it was a decent run for prelims in what has been a weird year. Musically, this year is maybe a tad more difficult than last. They are not as strong visually though. We’ll see what happens. Still a fun show and strong band.

I think so far, clearly JFB and Stoneman are in finals. What happens in these last blocks technically shouldn’t change that. Cleveland was a fun little show out of North Carolina.

Not a regular regional, but Tarpon beat BA in prelims at the 2013 Atlanta SR. Sure, different classes and only a .15 spread, but I honestly thought Tarpon was going to win that night after watching. We had to go right after them in finals that night. I thought I was listening to a drum corps hornline. A dubstep hornline lol. But that show was insane on the difficulty scale Loved that show but we (Tarpon) had electronics issues in both prelims and finals which was frustrating as heck.

As for today, lots of solid runs, no one really has felt super locked in other than a couple groups. Meat of the schedule is coming so that will help. Seminole should be in, West Harrison on the bubble I think.

Haha, you're talking about a band that beat Harrison at JC prelims last year. I think Cleveland has graduated past "fun little show". Although I haven't seen them this. Season because all their local competitions are pretty obscure.

And I don't think my comment was as defensive as you make it out to be. I just thought it was funny in the same way it would be to say "Tarpon Springs put on a nice little show out of Florida"
