Scores did not go the way I expected them to.

The recaps emphasize how little I know! Groups that I thought were excellent, but design would limit their effect scores, got 1st place rankings in GE! And I thought Onyx’s equipment work was stunning - 10th place in that caption. Wow!

Fun fact: 5 of the SW finalists are former/reigning BOA GN champions. The top four are all GN champions. I didn't even notice that!! Fun fact! On another note, I glanced over at Wikipedia since my memory was fuzzy, and this does put Carmel ahead of Avon for championships (they were previously both at 4), and now ties Carmel with Bishop Kearney for the second highest amount of championships at 5. Still NOWHERE NEAR touching James Logan's 11. Absolutely insane. I was there for their 2010 win, but I wish I could have seen their 9 year streak prior to that. If there is one thing I would love to see happen, it would be to see Tarpon & TW become yearly attendees. It gives me hope that both have returned for the second season in a row. I mean let's be realistic - both Tarpon & TW are at the point (well, Tarpon has been at this point) where neither one sees a single competitor anywhere even remotely close to them score-wise all season long unless they come to Dayton. And, they're elite ensembles within their schools and color guard organizations, so why not make that part of joining? With the appropriate scholarships available for those whose families can't afford it, of course (which would be numbered at zero in TW), you could have the expectation that making the cut for this group entails traveling to Dayton each year. I would love to see both fighting Carmel & Avon yearly for the top spot!! The only other interesting fact I will note is that this is Carmel's first win since Rosie Queen moved on a few years ago, and she built that program from the ground up. They've still managed to stay in the game at the top, but coming out on top in all 3 rounds is a different story. So, congrats to them! I love seeing any marching arts group sustain through a director change.

Lol Awe…. Wouldn’t that be fun! Unfortunately I can say that there are plenty of TWHS kids whose parents can’t afford that fee every year- on top of band travel fee’s…(and realistically multiple that can’t afford it and the band fee’s in any given year). Just because some of our parents have lots of money- a lot of them spend a lot of time and effort fundraising and forego other things to pay the fee’s- just like most other school demographics. 2nd reason it won’t happen- the school district has a rule that out of state travel can only happen every other year for a group. We had to request special permission to travel with the group 2 years in a row and were only given permission to travel because last year was making up the lost covid year.

Unfortunately. But it is what it is; I always forget how restrictive TW admin is! Either way, TW World Guard has so much to be proud of from their 2023 season. Even if it's every other year, I can't wait to see the guard keep making a splash at the top of SW, pushing their competitors, and eventually taking home the gold medal!

Now that I live in an expensive east coast city that people stretch their budgets to live in, I have a deeper appreciation for the fact that not every family in even The Woodlands’ attendance zone can easily afford it. There are certainly a non-zero number of families that are trying their best to make their budgets work to send their kids to one of the best schools in the nation with such a wide array of opportunities. I can get that it’s hard to feel sympathetic for a family that has to stretch to live in *The Woodlands*. But people try at all levels.

I knew Blessed Sac had been around for decades, but their 42nd appearance in Finals in a row. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yep. The fact that they're still around after what's happened to the marching arts in New England is a testament to the generations of Blessed Sacrament staff and members who have stuck around to keep their legacy alive. In 1998, there were eight independent guards from Massachusetts in finals, and many, many more who attended. Tons of local parishes and independent guards were recruiting members as young as elementary school, eventually working their way up to the various world class guards in the area. In 2023, there were two guards from Massachusetts in attendance at Dayton, and they're both from the Blessed Sacrament organization. Only one made finals. The Boston Crusaders felt the effects of the situation and in the late 90s relocated to Florida. Finding membership has never been easy for them. First they had to compete with several other MA world class guards in the 90s, and then the membership pool just became smaller and smaller over the years while all the others disappeared. They're known for having members march with them for over 10 years, and several have marched well into their 30s. I'd imagine they're one of the oldest guards on the floor tonight. All of this is part of the reason I'm holding out hope for the 1% chance they have at winning this tonight. Bellerica in SA finals! But still

paddy brought up Carmel again at the right time - yes I adored Sac and their performance was flawless and WOW are they doing incredible stuff just flat out nonstop....but similar to Carmel, I always wasn't totally swept away in it! I'm beyond sure that live I would have been. And this is different than a disinterest that one might express with a slower show - plenty of emotion to pick up on in those too, even if they don't always hit. There's something about both Carmel & Sac that seemed a little...unemotive? Not in the performers at all, but the design by nature! I mentioned Carmel was like watching a clinic, well Sac might've been like watching a run through at the end of a rehearsal. A lights-out one, but one nonetheless. I get that the stripped-down, "just riff" nature is what they were going for, but you don't get lost in it. Not that I need to in every show. And I certainly wouldn't use the word "boring" at all for either one!!!! And while Sac was infinitely more fun, there still was something about their show that I'd compare to Carmel. The best of the best of the best, but it doesn't envelope you. This is such an interesting take!! Yes, Sac and Carmel both did jazz, but I feel like they were both entirely different takes. Carmel felt so refined and cool. There wasn't a warmth that invited you in; I think you had to work harder to lean in and engage with it on their terms. Big cat energy lol Sac, on the other hand, was so boisterous and FUN!! It reminded me of all the attitude of Jerome Robbins' choreography in West Side Story. I also think it's kind of intense in a way that might be off-putting to some. Whereas Carmel is cool and doesn't really invite you in, Sac is hot and sassy—it kind of comes at you in a way that doesn't care whether you like it or not. Big "if you get it you get it, if you don't you don't" energy. (I also didn't get to see their final run last night, so maybe that was a less exciting run than their WGI Bethlehem run that hooked me a couple weeks ago or their prelims run from the other night.) To each their own, but Sac more than enveloped me. It had that East Coast rawness that I LOVE!!!

Question here, Does anyone know the soundtrack that was used for Arcadia's show? The music was some of the best that I heard during the weekend.
