New George Ranch HS director is David Singletary who was an assistant at Tompkins HS.
Tompkins Assistant Directors are now Ken Brown (Former Interim Director of Bands and Assistant Director at Pearland High) and Gino Hernandez (Former Assistant Director and Visual Coordinator at Pearland HS). The rise of Tompkins is now upon us.

More news out of Piedmont. Assistant director Sarah Workun is leaving, following Mr. Rivera to Yukon as assistant director there. Things are a bit shaky for the kids right now, but I wish all involved the very best regardless.

I have a feeling Yukon’s Mr. Craig may be moving to Piedmont, but who knows.

Piedmont has just announced Clint Brown as its new head band director. I believe he comes to us from Moore. I’m interested to see where he takes the band from here.

I don't believe this has been mentioned yet. This past April, Jamie McDonald, associate director of bands at Seven Lakes High School, announced his retirement to the students of Seven Lakes. He is pursuing a career as a singer/songwriter for his band, Oh Hooray. He will still tech for groups such as the Boston Crusaders and Seven Lakes High School. This had been communicated to John Mays, head director of bands at Seven Lakes High School long before it was publicly announced, which allowed for the immediate recruitment for a replacement. Less than a month following the job opening, Brody Wadkins was selected to fill the role of associate director of bands at Seven Lakes High School.
Brody Wadkins is a music education major who graduated from Ball State University this year (2018-2022) and was previously a member of the Homestead High School Marching Band (2014-2018) where he was a 3-year drum major for the Mustang Band. He has also marched tuba with the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps for three seasons (2018, 2019, and 2021). In 2018 and 2019, Brody Wadkins taught on the marching staff at Homestead High School and finished both seasons in ISSMA State Finals and Bands of America Grand National Finals. In 2020 and 2021, he taught at Concordia Lutheran who finished the season in ISSMA State Finals. Brody Wadkins spent this past year student teaching at Carmel High School (5-time BOA Grand National Champions) in Carmel, Indiana.

Gateway HS (PA) band director has been suspended and is under investigation. This could slow down their progress this season coming close to the start of the season.

Gateway HS (PA) band director has been suspended and is under investigation. This could slow down their progress this season coming close to the start of the season. Frankly, when something like that happens, the last thing to worry about is current momentum. Schools don’t suspend teachers for giggles.

I don’t think I’ve seen it posted here, but Lakota East has a new assistant director, Andrew Desmond. He was previously an assistant director at Milford.

Good for Brody! But, Homestead (IN) is not the Mustang Band. They are the Spartan Alliance Band. Homestead (CA) is the Mustang Band. Someone did some sloppy research for that bio.

I don’t think I’ve seen it posted here, but Lakota East has a new assistant director, Andrew Desmond. He was previously an assistant director at Milford. In addition, Milford has hired Grayson Myers, who had been teaching in the Dayton Public Schools, as the assistant director to replace Mr. Desmond.

Not sure if this has been posted already, but I've heard Weiss has practically had a ground up brand new staff brought in after departures for various reasons.

I’m sure I’m late on this, but after BOA announcements this week I noticed North Hardin had a director change as well. After doing a fair amount of digging on social media/KY forums, Kelsey Dunn (former assistant director) has replaced Brian Froedge as director of bands. Isaiah Kaumoo took her spot as new assistant director. Interestingly enough, this comes a year after Lafayette’s director change as well — in addition to plenty of other KY bands in this thread. Lots of new blood in KMEA this year!

Walnut Grove HS (New Prosper ISD school) has hired Tanner Smith, who was at Wakeland HS. I saw the fb post. They are just building schools left and right now in prosper isd. Isn’t that rock Hill school brand new too? I know lone star is pretty new too but I think that’s in a different district. Definitely a loss for Wakeland. They had a fab season last year and I think went to Midwest?

No official announcement yet, but I have heard this information from several people from within the program. I can confirm that he did announce this to the students today. There is a very understandable reason as to this move but it is not my place to share any of that kind of information. That said, let us all keep speculation out of the conversation and let the program make any announcement they wish regarding the change and move forward from there. This program has shown that it is nothing short of resilient so let's keep the gloom and doom talk out as well since they have continued to excel in the activity beyond some people's expectations. The fall season is still months away so I'm just trying to keep a cover on that talk before it boils over lol

Big Staff update for South Carolina:
Current director Bryan Bone at James F. Byrnes is leaving the program this current school year and will be transferring to Liberty High School (2A school) in Pickens County. All those bands just took a big breath lol.
He claims he is in a "CEO Role" at Byrnes and wishes to return to more of a "teaching role." "You get to know the kids better and have more of an impact."
Bryan Bone was at Byrnes for 10 years! It seems like only yesterday he began in 2013 after the legendary Phil McIntyre left to Greenville University. I'll never forget that 2013 5A state where Byrnes was the talk of the town after an amazing prelims perf.
I wish him well in getting back to his teaching roots.

That is quite the massive update for staff changes. And, a direction you almost never see, so that's really neat - and he is correct, the head director of most massive, highly-competitive band programs does indeed take on a roll that resembles more of an admin/Director of Fine Arts type of position. Good for him! Correct me if I'm wrong - wasn't Bryan Bone the director who put Boiling Springs on the map, and then subsequently Byrnes? I know Byrnes had always been at a high local level, but isn't he responsible for rocketing them up to a national level? If I'm thinking of the same director, Boiling Springs pretty much fell off of the map after his departure, so I hope there's enough leadership, depth of assistant directors, & momentum built up at Byrnes to keep up their current levels of competition after he leaves. 2022 was the first year they were every truly in the conversation for GN Finals, and I would love to see them continue to grow from there!

Bryan Bone did put Boiling Springs on the map. Not sure when he started however. I remember at that 5A state the Boiling Springs parents were not thrilled they lost their great director to a school 20 minutes away. Byrnes/ Duncan area is slightly more wealthy than the Boiling Springs area making some things easier for sure. Duncan is very close to where the BMW suv factory is. There are some good jobs for what is fringe rural IMO. But yes, Boiling Springs was made by Bone and he is the first and only director to win a state championship in each class 1A-5A.

Huge loss for Byrnes but I have no doubt that job will be sought after and should draw some great candidates. Could be great for someone who has been a #2 director at an equally large or larger program.

It is worth noting that Phil McIntyre did build the Byrnes name in the 90s through the mid 2000s. They even got a sudler shield under his direction. After that they dropped off a bit of the competitive scene as Phil McIntyre was nearing retirement. They did simpler pretty outdated shows but still played extremely well. It was 2013 when Bone come over and gave them Tarpon’s 2009 Bourne Trilogy show that they took off.
I seriously think that opening hit of the 2013 show might be one of the loudest hits I’ve ever heard on the field - truly memorable.
I’m not super concerned for the Byrnes program tbh. There are a lot of good potential directors. It’s possible they take a small dip but I don’t think it will be nearly what Boiling Springs endured.

There is going to be some churn in the central Indiana area. Nothing "big" but Franklin Central is hiring 3 new directors which reportedly will pull some established people from other schools which will open up more opportunities. Also, Ben Davis, Greenwood, and a couple other schools have some openings that will be attractive. Of course there is also the "Where does Warfield land" question looming.
