Minnesota has a complicated classification criteria which includes band competitiveness i.e. BV is now Class 4A. Lakeville South has been scoring closer to Eastview compared to fellow Class 2As in recent competitions. My bet is Lakeville will be in Class 3A in future YIMs. Class 3A and Class 4A is where it will be more interesting. More on that later, but between BOA Iowa and Festival of Bands, we will have a much better picture by YIM week.

Geez and I thought last year's field was stacked. Great to see another competitive field of bands at Youth in Music! Anyways, as northbanddad alluded to already, alot could change based on what happens at BOA Iowa & Festival of Bands but for now my predicted finalists for this are: Hastings H.S., MN (Class A Champion) Lakeville South H.S., MN (Class AA Champion) Millard West H.S., NE (Class AAA Champion) Rosemount H.S., MN (Class AAAA Champion) Lincoln H.S., SD Brandon Valley H.S., SD Eastview H.S., MN Papillion-La Vista South H.S., NE Millard North H.S., NE Irondale H.S., MN I wish YIM do something similar to BOA and FOB, select the top 10 scoring teams regardless of Class. This year though might be a bad example since for the most part, sans Hastings, the Top 10 is probably going to be there and a lot of bands that normally grace the Finals will not be. This is going to be the most competitive YIM in years and is truly becoming the premiere competition for bands north of I-80 midwest. But is there a "Minneapolis Miracle" at the top? While I do think other bands like Lincoln, Brandon Valley, and Eastview are getting closer, it’ll be no surprise that Rosemount is going to win its 16th YIM championship. The last 2 weekends, in BOA Iowa then FOB in Sioux Falls, has given us a preview. Last weekend at FOB, Rosemount extended its lead over Brandon Valley since the Eastview festival. On the other hand it’ll be interesting to see if Lincoln has gotten closer since BOA Iowa (which could give us a glimpse of how they’ll fare in Indy). That said, 2-6 is going to be crazy tight. BV beat Lincoln at Marshall, Eastview beat BV at Eden Prairie, Papillion-La Vista super close to BV at FOB, and Millard West beat BV in Prelims before taking 3rd in Finals in last years YIM. Whichever way it goes, we are all-in for a treat in Minneapolis. FINALS 1. Rosemount HS, MN (Class AAAA) 2. Sioux Falls Lincoln HS, SD 3. Brandon Valley HS, SD 4. Eastview HS, MN 5. Papillion-La Vista South HS, NE 6. Millard West HS, NE (Class AAA) 7. Lakeville South HS, MN (Class AA) 8. Grand Rapids HS, MN 9. Millard North HS, NE 10. Hastings HS, MN (Class A) Next 5: Irondale MN, Brookings SD, Farmington MN, Marshall MN, Eden Prairie MN PRELIMS Class AAAA 1. Rosemount HS, MN 2. Sioux Falls Lincoln HS, SD 3. Eastview HS, MN Class AAA 1. Millard West HS, NE 2. Grand Rapids HS, MN 3. Irondale HS, MN Class AA 1. Lakeville South HS, MN 2. Brookings HS, SD 3. Waseca HS, MN Class A 1. Hastings HS, MN 2. Anoka HS, MN 3. Mankato Area 77 Lancers, MN

2023 Youth In Music Predictions:
The 2023 Edition of Youth In Music is almost upon us. For most bands, this will be the end of their 2023 marching season. For others this will be their first runs in a controlled-enviornment setting ahead of upcoming BOA Super Regionals. We'll also see 2 of the likely 3 contenders for the Nebraska State Marching Championship compete here. I'm pretty confident in who is going to win, but outside of that, these predicitions are a shot in the dark. Here are those predictions.
1. Rosemount H.S., MN (Please Be Seated) - Since YIM's inception, Rosemount has only lost once (2015) and at the level they're performing this year it's hard to see that changing. They should handily be the Class AAAA champion here. 2. Lincoln H.S., SD (Fabric of Time) - The bridesmaid of the last 2 YIM's but I believe they'll have a good showing setting them up nicely for next week's Indy Super Regional. I expect, through subcaptions not on BOA sheets, that the gap between them & Rosemount will be closer than Iowa and I believe they'll win their 3rd straight outstanding guard award here. 3. Millard West H.S., NE (Off the Rails) - The Milly train is rolling into Minneapolis. While there are some similarities between their show and Hendrickson's show last year (including a certain Crown 2018 piece towards the end) it is still a lot of fun to watch. I expect it'll likely be a fan-favorite here and at St. Louis in two weeks. The Milly Train should handily take Class AAA. 4. Brandon Valley H.S., SD (Solstice) - They'll be interesting to watch here. Having finally been able to see them live last week, I really liked their individual music moments but I also felt their ensemble power lacked a bit behind groups like Rosemount and PLVS. Still, their show will be maxed out and they should have a solid showing here. I would not be surprised to see them win the percussion caption. 5. Papillion-La Vista South H.S., NE (Long Live Curiosity) - A cute fun show, and I loved the sound that they put out last week at Festival of Bands but they were unfortunately hit with a bad stroke of luck when their lead guard soloist sustained an injury halfway through their finals run. Curious to see how they'll work through that this coming week. 6. Eastview H.S., MN (The Ballad of Eastview) - A show that I could easily see being two spots higher than where I have them. As I mentioned in the Iowa thread, I'm a sucker for western shows and I really love this show from Eastview. Love the individual soloist moments from them, but I also really like their ensemble power. 7. Lakeville South H.S., MN (Where the Wild Things Are) - Looks like a show based on the beloved children's book. While I haven't seen them perform, just taking them at face value, they seem to be the next rising star in the Minnesota band arena and I'm excited to see what the future holds for them. I have them as our Class AA champion. 8. Irondale H.S., MN (What on Earth?) - After a few down years, Irondale seems to be trending back in the right direction. I also have my eyes on their percussion to potentially win that caption as well. 9. Millard North H.S., NE (Show Title Unknown) - I have Millard North in based on past performance history at YIM but I also wouldn't be surprised if a group like Brookings or Grand Rapids snuck in ahead of them 10. Hastings H.S., MN (3 Wishes) - It's usually a safe bet that Hastings will be the Class A Champion though I would also keep an eye out for Harrisburg or Mankato 77 Lancers.

I wish YIM do something similar to BOA and FOB, select the top 10 scoring teams regardless of Class. This year though might be a bad example since for the most part, sans Hastings, the Top 10 is probably going to be there and a lot of bands that normally grace the Finals will not be.. With 32 bands in competition, I’d love to see a 12 band finals at YIM with class champion exhibitions. However, that could potentially add 45 minutes to an hour to finals. With the first band going on at 7:15 am and awards starting over 15 hours later, I think this show is at max capacity for performances.

BOA's 12 in a Regional finals seems ideal to me. YIM can theoretically start at 6:30/6:45 with the National Anthem, and remove the 8:45pm break, it can still end at about the same time. I just feel they should include as many deserving bands as possible in Finals considering all the hard work and time put into this.

Youth in Music (Minneapolis, MN) Update:
No full knowledge of placements for Class 1A and 2A as of yet, but can confirm that Hastings won Class 1A with a clean sweep of captions while Lakeville South won Class 2A. Unclear on which captions they won, but Brookings placed 2nd in 2A and won outstanding winds. Brookings is on the finals bubble for one of the last of the 6 at-large berths into finals.
As class champions, both Hastings and Lakeville South have automatically qualified for finals tonight.
