I cant believe TL Hanna won 4A. So you’re telling me TL Hanna could beat Clover, Byrnes, Catawba Ridge AND Nation Ford??? I just don’t buy it Hence my disdain for state scoring and judging. Nothing makes sense anymore. I keep last years 5A score sheets in case I ever need to provide evidence in a criminal corruption trial 🤣🤣. I’m kidding…about the trial part. Judges are diplomatically immune. Looks like this year could be even whackier. Agreed. I am somewhat familiar with their director as he ran Palmetto Percussion when I was there back when they were in PIW. He is very good a creating the production and getting the best designers, but our playing abilities never improved much beyond when we started. The focus was on the show not fundamentals, if that gives any perspective.

TL over CR and NF makes me very nervous about 5A this week. They’re throwing darts at score sheets now.

TL over CR and NF makes me very nervous about 5A this week. They’re throwing darts at score sheets now. It does seem so. I've always thought 4A was pretty wild compared to 5A. I always think Summerville gets a score boost that they otherwise might not get somewhere else though. There were many years Nation Ford only won Music or Visual but still won overall. But at the end of the day, we all know NF and CR are the better programs even if they don't win the show.

I would’ve put AF in before Southlake to be honest. I had them 7th by the end of semis under the obvious top half. Fair call. I watched Southlake in prelims because they were the last band and literally played after Byrnes and thought “okay, we’ll…that was good”. After watching AF I was convinced they were finals bound. Makes me wonder if AF would have been in if they’d had a TX address. Not hating on TX bands, it’s just hard to imagine that doesn’t give you an slight bit of advantage. Bias is nothing new in the marching arts. To be 100% transparent, I would also have put AF in over Prosper, Castle and Fishers.

Irmo was bursting at the seams these last few years, is Walterboro any better?? I think the last time it was there was 2012.

It’s actually worse lol. Irmo seats around 6,500 I think…Colleton County (Walterboro) looks like around 4,500? Maybe a little more but I can’t find anything online that tells me the stadium capacity. And to rub it in, it’s a 3hr drive from here versus 1hr 20min to Irmo so they have a 4:30 AM call time. They just can’t catch a break this year. Other upstate bands will also feel it. This has been the most challenging season logistically. Throw in a director change and you have what we call a “character building year” 😂

I think Clover is driving down Friday and staying the night at a hotel. But I believe they go on first

There have to be better venues. What about Charleston southern?? Go back to Conway for gosh sakes even From what I gather, the host schools only get about $1 per ticket sold, but they also have to provide the staffing, etc. So most schools just don’t even put their name in to host because the money isn’t worth the headache. But to not have another solution….aaannnnnnnyyyyyyy other solution…is absurd to me.

Sorry…there was literally no service in the stadium after about 10:30 AM. I’ll post thoughts tomorrow but I will say this about Blythewood, they were definitely given a result that doesn’t make sense and should have been higher.

Byrnes closes a 5 point gap with Wando at 5A state to just over 1.

So the SC 5A state championship in a nutshell:
Clover 3rd (90.00) - they get better every year and should have probably scored closer to Byrnes overall. I’m such a fan of that program and it was great to see them continue to move forward as a competitive band.
Strafford 8th (83.85) - they have the best soprano sax player in the state, change my mind. They’re another SC school that continues to improve.
Blythewood 10th (81.75) - I don’t know what I’m missing about their show that kept them from placing higher. Possibly a weaker book and musical verticality. But 10th is questionable. It’s one of those situations where the judges seem to watch a different show than the people in the stands, but you know…judges gonna judge.
Summerville 4th (88.40) -they landed in the right spot this year. A very “Dobyns Bennet-ish” show idea, and even seemed to borrow some of the concepts from DB’s 2021 program. We’ll call it “DB Light”.
James F. Byrnes 2nd (92.050) - a director change, late and incomplete show design, travel challenges…after the BOA in Conway we weren’t sure what to expect. But their accelerated improvement from that point to now is actually astonishing. This state finals run was a statement that progress is happening despite the challenges and that JFB is ambitious. They were super stoked about keeping their upper state streak and maybe more so by the substantial gap decrease with Wando.
Wando 1st (93.80) - Wando posted a five point spread on JFB in Conway (86.150 vs 81.150). This is the lowest they’ve scored at state since 2010. They had their normal impeccable sound and musical precision. The one thing I will say is that they had dirty feet and foot phasing issues you don’t usually see with Wando. I feel like the show itself was a little too vague and maybe didn’t translate as well either. But again, I’m no judge. They’re still Wando.
Aside from the Blythewood placement, I feel like this was one of the more honest and reasonably scored state contests in a while.

I also have to say, Colleton County High School for the most part hosted a well run contest and the stadium was better than Irmo. It was smaller, but better. Our only complaint is just the proximity of the warm up area and the competition field. Byrnes was overpowered during their ballad by a band warming up. I mean very overpowered. Listen if you like...it happens here and there but is most obvious around the 4:37 mark. JFB State Finals 11/4/2023The cellular service was nil-nada-nothing-nowhere. And the travel time was certainly not "central" to all schools. Early performing upper state bands got the short end on that drive.

Let me preface this with the "It's only my second year really being involved in this stuff, so I don't know much."
Really, the only shocking thing to me was the Summerville Collective. That was a weird and kinda basic show to me - really surprised they ended up 4th. The kids did amazing, so I'm clearly not trying to slight them. It just didn't really hit me as hard as most of the other finalists.
Overall, I think most people were happy with how Colleton County handled the show. It wasn't ideal, but I think it was a lot better than most of us thought. I still don't understand why it was there. It's very much not central, and not a great configuration for handling that size show. If you're going to come almost all the way to the coast, you might as well use one of the Charleston or Dorcester County stadium sites.
Maybe y'all can help me out with the location idea. Personally, after being at River Bluff for DCI, I'm not sure why it's not hosted there. They have a beautiful stadium, more than enough room for everyone (also warm-ups can be a bit farther from the stadium), and they're about as central as it gets in SC. I'm not sure why it wasn't always there over Irmo in the first place.
Now, my pie in the sky idea is for it to be hosted by SC or Clemson - whichever isn't playing at home that weekend. Sure us Coastal folks wouldn't love hauling our beach bums up four hours to Clemson every other year, but I think the allure of playing in that stadium for the kids would make it worth it. Maybe both those fields are real grass and they don't want a full day of bands on them in the middle of football season? Who knows. I just think it'd be pretty cool for all the kids.
Back to this past weekend. I have just got to say that all the kids were amazing! I know there's been some heat between some programs before, but I didn't notice ANY of that this weekend. The kids were all shouting stuff like "we love you guys!!" and "you were amazing!!" It was just great to see and hear! Hope everyone can rest up now that the season is over (for most of us).

So I can at least answer part of your host school questions. In SC, schools cannot host a state competition that is in their class (i.e. 5A cannot host the 5A event). So that limits the choices right out of the gate. River Bluff, for example, is a 5A school and could not host. The bigger issue is that host schools only make $1 per ticket sold. But they have to staff and run the event. So most schools aren’t interested in the headache for the minimal money they’ll bring in. The Colleton County location certainly put upper state schools in some degree of disadvantage. Particularly the early prelims times (Byrnes had a home playoff game the night before with a 4:30 AM call time for state and was the 4th band to perform prelims). But the SCBDA just had a couple of options to choose from for a host. It is what it is. Irmo’s contract for 5A state ended last season. They are currently renovating the stadium and may once again host at some point. I do wonder why the football state championships are played at USC but the SCBDA can’t contract even a smaller university.

I'm obviously biased to lower state locations, but I'd be 100% fine being somewhere in the Columbia area - that seems like the most central and fairest spot. I understand the reasoning for not allowing a competing school to host, but that puts the biggest competition at a smaller school, which is a bit counterintuitive. I'll ask our director why we couldn't try to do a university - I'm guessing it's something that's been talked about (or at least I hope it has).
