I know we had a thread for this on the MFA forums, but since that is lost in the void of the internet, I thought there should be a new one. I think this will be very interesting thing to look back on in the future.
What are the top 10 bands in each state? And what bands are edging closer to getting this status?

For Oklahoma:
1. Broken Arrow. This is a no-brainer. Broken Arrow has been a powerhouse for many years now. I can't see them being passed by one of these bands for a while. They will remain Oklahoma's best for years to come 2. Union. Union has also been a very top-tier program for a very long time. Union just got over an off year, being beaten by Bixby and Jenks (yes, it was early season, but it still happened. They arguably would have lost to them at OBA if they would have gone) but unless they end up losing to them again this season, which is a possibility (for at least Jenks), I still rank them second. 3. Jenks/Bixby. Jenks and Bixby have been rivals in most extracurriculars for decades, and band is not an exception. Since 2015, Jenks and Bixby have been neck and neck, constantly passing each other, though Jenks generally ends up ahead. Jenks just lost a director, and many of their guard, which will affect them in the future, so I could see Bixby passing them next season. 5. Owasso. Owasso has been a powerhouse in Oklahoma for a while and remains one of their best bands. Owasso had an unusually low scoring season in 2018 and was passed by Bixby and Jenks, losing its usual number 3 spot. Owasso might comeback this season and take it's usual spot, but I'm betting on Jenks and Bixby passing them again. 6. Coweta. Coweta is the reigning 4A/5A state champions, beating the other groups by a comfortable margin. This is also the only non-6A band on this list. Some people would place Mustang in the 6th place spot, but I honestly think Coweta is a better overall band. Coweta and Mustang do not compete at the same contests, so it's hard to compare them. 7. Mustang. Mustang is a grand national semi-finalist and fares well in in-state contests. Mustang has been among the top in Oklahoma and I expect them to stay in this spot, and perhaps pass Coweta on my list. 8. Edmond Memorial. Edmond Memorial has really climbed the lists recently, and I expect a lot from them in the future. They beat Mustang for 6th at OBA this year, but I am still placing them here unless they beat Mustang again next year. 9. Southmoore. Southmoore has improved over the past few years and overtook Westmoore in OBA and easrned a spot on this list. 10. Choctaw. Choctaw has dropped from what they used to be, but they are still a very good program that has earned their spot on the top 10 list.

Wisconsin has a very small pool of notable ensembles.
1. Greendale —notable drop off— 2. Oak Creek 3. River Falls 4. Waukesha North 5. Baldwin-Woodville 6. Waukesha West —heavy drop off— 7. Cumberland 8. Sauk Prairie 9. Fond du Lac 10. Germantown etc.
The majority of ensembles in the state (roughly 30 compete at their state championships) are still quite behind when it comes to contemporary competitive marching band design, with Baldwin-Woodville, Greendale, River Falls and Waukesha North normally being the only ensembles to historically have more innovative and contemporary show designs. Oak Creek is arguably the best band musically in the state, but their show design is still in the 1990s. The latter is the same issue with Waukesha West, but they have a rich history of success and are still a decent ensemble. In recent history there has been a notable gap separating the top 20% of ensembles from the bottom 80%, unfortunately. Greendale has been absolutely dominating the state, scoring several points higher than the second-place overall finisher at their state championships the last few years, and being the only regularly active participant in BOA events for the last decade. Hopefully that will change if the Iowa regional remains a permanent location!

I'll try Texas and feel free to challenge any of my choices. I just made my decisions based on how they have done the past few years.
1. Flower Mound 2. CTJ 3. Hebron 4. Ronald Reagan 5. The Woodlands 6. Leander 7. Vandegrift 8. Marcus 9. Cedar Park 10. Keller
And I have Hendrickson, Cedar Ridge, James Bowie, and Vista Ridge on the edge. Probably another highly successful year or two for Vista Ridge and they will be in the top 10.

Texas is pretty easy to narrow down to ten(-ish). Alphabetically:
CTJ Flower Mound Hebron Keller Leander Ronald Reagan Vandegrift The Woodlands
Have been the most consistent for the past four years. They’ve all been in San Antonio finals (except Leander 2015) and haven’t missed state finals in the same period (except CTJ 2016).
Vista Ridge and Marcus are in the next tier. One just shot up, and the other is uncertain (but seems likely to hang around with this group for a while).
Then Cedar Park and Cedar Ridge kinda round this group out. Cedar Park had a rough year but is still the King of 5A, and Cedar Ridge weathered director changes into their best year yet in-state.
These 12 are the pinnacle right now. But some others are knocking on the door.

I think Hendrickson is also on this list - they've been in San Antonio finals 3 straight years which is more than Vista Ridge (once), Cedar Park (twice), and Cedar Ridge (twice). Very consistent over these years.

I left Hendrickson off because they missed state finals twice now and they're going through another head director change. But! They probably did deserve a mention.

Especially the Dallas area what with FloMo, Marcus, Hebron, Keller, Haltom, LD Bell, Timber Creek, Waxahachie, and many, many more.

Sometimes I wonder how in the world judges score a band, and how they are able to discern between a couple tenths of a point difference between two bands. Generally that means an even tighter split in the separate captions.

Florida (In alphabetical)
Park Vista: Been on the rise and is going to nationals this year. Got 2nd last year at the BOA Orlando Regional, and 4th this year. Their shows always have a level of elegance from them and I love it every year.
Stoneman Douglas: Been right behind Park Vista and from time to time beating them. Last year got 4th at BOA Orlando Regional and 5th this year. Similar to Park Vista, they have a level of precision that’s extremely consistent, however I feel they are slightly are more scrappy. Make more with less. It helps and hurts them sometimes. Also the tragedy that happened there will always be fuel to their fire.
Tarpon Springs: Do I even need to explain why? They know how to rock a marching show. 1st last year at BOA Orlando and 4th at Grand Nationals last year. Then 2nd at the Orlando Regional this year, they have every show they put out just has a vibe that feels like pure confidence. In the way they play, their designs, their drill it just feels like they’re saying “Yeah we just did that, what’re you gonna do to beat it?” Love Tarpon and they are without a doubt the best band in Florida.
Timber Creek (FL): I heavily debated on whether to put them on here with the others, but they have definitely shown they have the potential to be at all three of these bands level. 5th last year at BOA Orlando and 6th this year (5th in prelims, above Stoneman, was penalized and dropped to 6th). Their shows have potential. They always have. It’s just they feel safe in one aspect or the other. 2018 visually was outstanding, but musically wasn’t very difficult. This year was the opposite. They started with a minute and a half of a woodwind feature that was straight 16th notes (I believe in what sounded like 3/4 or 6/8), however was lacking in creative visual design that would make them stand out. If they mixed their last two shows, I could see them above both Park Vista and Stoneman (Hot Take maybe even Tarpon if they have a bad year next year and TC succeeds at getting out of their shell).

Generally that means an even tighter split in the separate captions. Training and experience. I'm not a judge, and I have no training, but I find that the sheer experience of having watched so many performances gives me a reasonable sense of how the bands stack up. At least, I get more hits than misses.
And if a nobody like me can get it approximately right, then it's not hard to imagine someone with training identifying the fine distinctions others miss.

Depending on your criteria (recent results weighing heavier than historic results) I would add Greenfield-Central in your next groups list as well.

Ok I did it. I put forth some serious effort and I have compiled what I believe to be a decently accurate ranking of the best bands in every single state. My goal was to figure who the likely representatives of each state would be if every single state sent exactly one band to nationals every single year. I know that this is kinda the exact opposite of the intended purpose of this thread but I made this list and I don't know what else to do with it. Here they are:
Vandegrift, TX Avon, IN Broken Arrow, OK Tarpon Springs, FL Blue Springs, MO William-Mason, OH Wando, SC Lincoln-Way, IL Ayala, CA Dobyns-Bennett, TN Lafayette, KY Harrison, GA American Fork, UT Rosemount, MN Lafayette, LA Rockford, MI Bentonville, AR James Madison, VA Norwin, PA Mililani, HI Clovis, NM Cleveland, NC Grants Pass, OR Blue Valley West, KS Greendale, WI Gretna, NE Dartmouth, MA Independence, IA Lincoln, SD Foothill, NV Hernando, MS Fossil Ridge, CO Mountain Ridge, AZ Cabell Midland, WV Hoover, AL Norwalk, CT Colony, AK Elizabeth, NJ Arlington, NY Central Valley, WA Governor Thomas Johnson, MD Middletown, DE Timberline, ID Westbrook, ME Portsmouth, NH Bozeman, MT Cheyenne East, WY Cranston East, RI Rutland, VT Legacy, ND
That's all 50. However, there are many areas of the country that I am not familiar with and likely made some huge gaffs. People from New England, North Dakota, and the Northwest please feel free to correct any mistakes. I also attempted to rank these bands but I would like to add that this ranking falls apart in the 20's or so.

Oh, I’ve been dying to share my Missouri rankings for so long.
MO: 1. Blue Springs 2. Camdenton 3. Fort Zumwalt North 4. Nixa 5. Blue Springs South 6. Rockwood Summit 7. Grain Valley 8. Kickapoo 9. Lafayette 10. Lindbergh
By class: AAAA really isn’t a thing in MO. The only school I could find that competed in a BOA event was Marquette, who had a II rating and placed 47th. AAA- Blue Springs, Nixa, Blue Springs South AA- Camdenton, Fort Zumwalt North, Grain Valley A- also not really a thing. Hollister HS did place 3rd in class at San Antonio this year, though.
Missouri has only just recently made a name for itself- the second Missouri band to appear in GN semifinals was only awarded that title in 2018. I know groups like Nixa, FZN, Grain Valley and BSS are capable of performing at a higher level, and I’d like to see them make waves in the activity. I’d also love to see Kickapoo catch up and reclaim their former glory. The recent rocketing success of the Camdenton program has inspired a lot of groups, so hopefully more schools start to look outside the local circuit and realize they’re entirely capable of playing with the big kids.

I am surprised to not see a listing for Illinois. This is from my post on Illinois Marching Online. Rankings are primarily based on 2019 results. Hopefully this will generate some discussion...
(ISU – Illinois State University Marching Band Championships. This is considered by many as the “unofficial” state championships for Illinois.)
Overall, I think 2019 was positive for Illinois marching bands. This can be justified by the Indianapolis Super Regional results. Illinois was represented by three bands in the top seven in Finals and had five bands in the top 20. Without searching through archives, this may be the best overall finish by Illinois bands at the Indianapolis Super Regional.
The Indianapolis Super Regional results from 2019 should help recruitment for the top bands below.
I provided my outlook and comments for my top 10 bands. Since I live in the western suburbs of Chicago, I see the Chicago area bands more than bands from downstate Illinois, so my picks are probably more biased towards these bands. I also provided my 2019 comments (for comparison) when the question was asked a year ago on the Illinois Forum.
1. Lincoln-Way – (2019) The band to beat, and probably will remain so. They have the largest band and the largest pool of students from their schools.
2020 – Very nice show for 2019 that was well executed with the two-color uniforms and props. Really came on strong at the end of the season. Always has a nice show. Strong color guard. Overall, I have the same expectations for Lincoln-Way in 2020.
2. O’Fallon Township – (2019) Very nice show the past couple of years, but the question is whether they can repeat. It will be interesting to see what their show will be this year. While not at ISU in 2019, they are going to several BOA competitions where other Illinois bands are performing.
2020 – Like Lincoln-Way, always has an excellent show. We can expect O’Fallon to be strong again in 2020. I do not know much about the school to provide details for a 2020 forecast. Unfortunately, ISU and the St. Louis Super Regional are the same weekend again in 2020, so we may not see O’Fallon at ISU for a second year in a row.
3. Lockport Township – (2019) Excellent visual performances. Excellent soloist performances. Watching their YouTube video of their 2018 Grand Nationals performance provides an overall perspective you do not see at local competitions. Lockport has always placed a very close second to Lincoln Way in the ISU 6A field, so this a band to watch in the future.
2020 - Again, the visual aspect of their 2019 show was extremely strong, and the addition of the drumline (albeit small) accented their overall performance. Very nice woodwind movements. Lockport is probably the best in the state at integrating the color guard into their show. Lockport made Finals for the first time ever at Indianapolis Super Regionals, so students must be excited about this accomplishment and should carry over into 2020. I expect 2020 to be another highly successful year for this school.
4. Marian Catholic – (2019) Best band musically. Always has great shows, but the show theme last year [2018] was not as powerful as past shows. I expect better this year.
2020 – I thought the execution of their show was better in 2019 than 2018, but I think the quality of their competition is also getting better. Just missed Finals at Indy Super Regional and Grand Nationals, it will be interesting to see how Marian Catholic responds for 2020.
5. Prospect – (2019) Their show is always well executed. One of the bands you don't want to miss performing. Always a very good band and will remain within the top five.
2020- The 2019 statements remain true. They do not perform an overly complex show, but their execution is always among the best. Finished 17th at Indy Super Regional and will remain within the top five within the state.
6. Downers Grove South – (2019) An excellent show in 2018. I expect they will build from this show in 2019. Another band you want to watch.
2020 – This band may have experienced some growing pains in 2019, and appeared they finally got everything together at the University of Illinois Championships. I still believe this is a band to watch.
7. Morton – (2019) Excellent all-around band. Finished 29th at 2018 Grand Nationals. They do not have the appearance of a small school band and appear to be a very dedicated group. I expect Morton to remain the top ISU 2A band for several years.
2020 – Still the best band in the ISU 2A Field. I expect them to remain very successful. I still consider them an enthusiastic group.
8. John Hersey – (no 2019 prediction) – Started slow in 2019 but came back strong later in the season. Like Prospect, another band that executes their program very well.
9. Victor J. Andrew – (no 2019 prediction) – Andrew had a very good season for 2019. Their show was always a crowd favorite. Will their success continue into 2020?
10. Romeoville – (no 2019 prediction) – A school that had a very successful season for 2019. Romeoville made Finals for the first time at ISU. The excitement was very evident in the both the crowd and in the band at ISU. A cleaner and more polished performance will improve their overall placement.

Lincoln Way was my second favorite from Indy. Watched them live. Their visuals were better (from nosebleeds) than the Indy Avon but not better than the GN Avon. All I can say is that I hope Lincoln Way can pull off another stunt like that, maybe a sequel 😝 I would be ecstatic to see the best trilogy since LD Bell be all about the visual GE.
