What are some shows that are memorable or nostalgic that you remember while marching or have a child who marched in high school that weren’t your own? I was in high school from 2013-2016 and the most memorable shows I can recall are: Marian Catholic 2013 (brass members playing flutes and clarinets?!) James Bowie 2013 (flight of the bumblebee) Round Rock 2013 Broken Arrow 2014 (Adiago of Spartacus and Phrygia) Avon 2014 (literally the whole show) Marian Catholic 2015 (yoinked music from Carmel and Avon at Indy SR) Avon 2015 (loved Black Gold) Avon 2016 Castle 2016 Now that I’ve just been a spectator there are so many more. My time watching while in band was somewhat limited..

The years that I marched; 1988 to 1991 have sometimes been referred to as BOA's teenage years.
For BOA, the two BOA shows that seemed to be most talked about at Grand Nationals.
1988 - George Roger's Clark KY 1988 - Centerville OH
1989 - Marian Catholic IL 1989 - Norwin PA
1990 - Westfield TX 1990 - Union OK
1991 - Lake Park IL 1991 - Duncanville TX
In Michigan, the most talked about shows other than Plymouth, Jenison and Flushing
1988 - Linden 1989 - Durand 1990 - Wyoming Park 1991 - Lakeland

2012 -LV Berkner Can't for the life of me remember what the show was called, but it was about phases of water I think. They had light up guard shields and a very cool tarp they used in the closer. Such a soothing show for me. -LD Bell "This Bitter Earth" Featuring some truly unwieldy giant guard "costumes," I remember seeing them struggle to maneuver through the lot at competitions. Lots of visual demand here. 2013 -CTJ "Enigmatic" Acrobats! -Blue Springs "I'm Not Wendy!" Just a very fun show, in a lot of ways they haven't changed how they do things design wise since this one. except they used to wear aussies 2014 -Marcus "Imperial Treasures" Giant gongs and rimsky-korsakov, the last of the 5 straight marcus state titles -Leander "Color Study" I just remember they were absolutely booking it in that show. They seemed to come out of nowhere at BOA San Antonio. 2015 -Flower Mound "Surreal" Can't say much other than that it's one of the best shows of the decade. So many iconic moments, both musical and visual. Go rewatch it right now. -William Mason "Somewhere" A pretty fresh take on the west side story show archetype. They had so many of those fence props. Also remember some mostly friendly trash talk with a few of their members while making our way through the indianapolis convention center.

My high school years were filled with many local and state competitions, and not necessarily those on the national level, but of course I remember hearing about a few of these (and many more) and finding performances that just really stuck out to me. Of course, so did the rest of the band community, as so many of these are still talked about today.
2015 - Broken Arrow: "Wild Blue Orchid"- I had the privilege of seeing this show live at 6A OBA that year, and though I barely knew what BOA was or that there was a national circuit for marching band, being a naive freshman, I just remember being absolutely transfixed by this show. So imagine my surprise a couple weeks later when Broken Arrow took the GN title, and then I discovered a whole new realm to my newfound activity. - Blue Springs: "Subliminal"- I just remember thinking the TVs were such a cool addition. Definitely ahead of its time by a couple years, and the Hymn of Axciom portion never gets old. - Avon: "Black Gold"- When I saw that this show was what Broken Arrow beat at Nats, I was even more impressed with their achievement because it's just such a great show! And one that I think still holds up today.
A bonus one for 2015: Mustang's "Birds of Prey" show. They weren't quite the BOA powerhouse back then that they are these days, and were still finding solid footing in BOA during these years (this show in particular earned 10th place at St. Louis finals that year in a rather unexpected first for the band), but this show was one of the first ever marching band shows I saw live, and the sheer power behind their sound, the musical selections, and the guard's "bird wings" had me absolutely HOOKED. I still go back and watch videos of it from time to time, although compared to what they're putting out these days it doesn't hold up as well. Still a great watch, though, and I consider this to be one of the shows that got me deeper into the activity.
2016 - Flower Mound: "Leonardo's Dream"- I still find it absolutely insane that high schoolers- TEENAGERS- were playing like that! Just an absolute master class in articulation and music effect, and my personal introduction to the raw power of Texas bands. - Union: "Shadowland"- This show would've made GN finals in a weaker year, change my mind. Yet another concept that I think is super creative and has been imitated (with a bit more success) plenty of times since Union did it.
2017 - Marcus: "PrODDigy"- Still one of the cleanest sounding bands I've ever heard, and one that I feel got cheated out of the music caption at GN that year. Just a really fun concept and one of the most decorated marching bands in the state of Texas demonstrating their ability to play like a wind ensemble on the field. - CTJ: "The Forest Through the Trees"- Speaking of clean bands, how about one that plays clean AND has a megaton worth of props on the field? I remember watching this for the first time, and like many other of my first experiences with Texas bands, just having my jaw drop to the floor. There's gotta be something they're putting in the water in Texas, because nobody does music quite like them! (Sorry, Indiana, I love you guys too).
2018 - Hebron: "Endeavor"- The Hebron High School Drum and Bugle Corps. Enough said. - Jenks: "Car-Man"- I'm a bit of a car junkie, so this show scratched an itch for me that I never knew I needed scratched. It's still to this day, in my opinion, one of the most creative concepts for a marching band show I've ever seen. Glad that this ended in a GN finals appearance for them. - The Woodlands: "Synapse"- this one was so catchy! Yes, you can tell it was designed for UIL, but I love the callbacks to their older shows, and of course think the concept is pretty interesting! It's so catchy that it almost sticks out to me purely because of that. This is also the last show they did before they took the more Bluecoats-esque design route. Not that I don't like the shows they're doing now (I love them actually), but just something I thought was worth noting.
Other shows I remember vividly and fondly, before/after I marched purely because I enjoyed watching them so much: Broken Arrow 2006, Hebron 2021, BA 2021, Avon 2022, Avon 2010, BA 2014, LD Bell 2006 and 2007, Marcus 2007, Ronald Reagan 2019, Vandegrift 2018, The Woodlands 2006, LD Bell 2001, Union 2000, Owasso 2017, Southmoore 2015 (criminally underrated), Reagan 2003, and many others I can't list here without making an even bigger wall of text.

2012 -LD Bell "This Bitter Earth" Featuring some truly unwieldy giant guard "costumes," I remember seeing them struggle to maneuver through the lot at competitions. Lots of visual demand here. Did Union 2017 have a similar concept to this show, or was it just a naming coincidence?

For me last decade I would say BA 2014 Faceme was probably one of the most memorable shows.
BA was just so clean and everything was working. There was not one weak section. That show just POPPED. I think what also made it special was it felt very different from the previous 3 BA shows. Seemed like Wes was really just exploring a concept and having fun with it. Really a concept just sort of drawn out of thin air, but obviously extremely layered conceptually.

It is one of the first shows that really enticed me to start following BOA! When I was in high school, my small class A band performed immediately after BA in prelims of the Renegade Review, and I remember just feeling so overwhelmed with awe and "my god why are we going after them." I also remember hearing parents from a few different schools talking about how "gross" and "demonic" that show was based on the fact that the guard wore those big straw-looking hats and used them like tongues through the props a couple of times. LOL, iconic.

Did Union 2017 have a similar concept to this show, or was it just a naming coincidence? I feel like every show with this title (and there have been MANY) share the concept. Both Union and Bell had great shows those years. If I remember correctly, Wes left Bell early that season, and you can tell when watching the guard. Not his work or costume design, and the guard lost about half its members.
