Happy 2023 Grand Nationals Week! I remember there was a thread for this week back in 2021, so lets bring it back again for 2023! This thread will be for discussion leading up to Prelims on Thursday! Discussion about which bands you're excited to see, final predictions, etc., are all welcome topics. For those attending in-person for the first time and have any questions about the event, our lovely moderators hewhowaits & Allohak are great sources for answers, as are some of our other forum folk that have attended Grand Nationals numerous times. This thread will be available throughout the duration of this week but there will be other discussion threads for each round of Grand Nationals. The Prelims thread will go live Wednesday evening, the Semifinals thread will go live immediately following the Prelims Ceremony, and the Finals thread will go live immediately following the Semifinals Awards Ceremony. Once again, happy Grand Nationals week!

Come on Woodlands!! They need to lazer focus on music and I think they can do it.
I love Hebron but I think their show may hold them back, even thought I like it very much

In grand nationals finals ... in random order
Woodlands - holy smokes at SASR ... medal for sure in their favor Carmel - no explanation needed, music and GE carrying the program William Mason - no explanation needed, looking forward to see how they clean up and add the usual wes tag ending Avon - no explanation, would like to see them top carmel this year, Vis and GE carrying the program this year Blue Springs - coming in swingin after that 93 at St. Louis, not sure how it'll stack up in rankings since quite literally everyone is bringing their best this year Fishers - temperature readings indicate they had quite the point jump from Indy SR to ISSMA State, i would expect to see this growth going in to GN finals, had more layers in the show too, I wonder what else they might add Hebron - no explanation needed ... dow they finally win? Do they win a caption(cough cough ... music)? we will see what the crystal ball has in store Pearland - they have the show design and music to compete well and sneak in, will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come Brownsburg - I have them in, but bottom 3-4 groups, feel like they barely improved from Indy SR to ISSMA state, not sure how much butter the show will do as far as points are concerned Round Rock - they have the show design and music to land them in well, ground performances the past few weeks Bentonville - GE has helped them all season, easiest of shows to make finals but it's clean so ... Keller or CTJ - could see either show in, not strongly favored towards one group or the other

It is Grand Nats week!!!! Finally! In case you’ve missed it I have posted two predictions before this. One was two weeks ago with very generic predictions of Finals locks, likely, bubble, etc. This saw a lot of change going into last weeks predictions due to ISSMA, UIL, and Super Regionals Indy and St Louis. Then last week was more specified groupings and has now changed a lot due to videos I have finally got my hands on if certain bands, and also Supers San Antonio. So here are my Grand Nats week, placement predictions for the Top 25 bands!!!
Finals: 1. The Woodlands(Panel 2) 2. Carmel(Panel 2) 3. Hebron(Panel 2) 4. Avon(Panel 2) 5. Blue Springs(Panel 1) 6. William Mason(Panel 1) 7. Round Rock(Panel 1) 8. Pearland(Panel 1) 9. Brownsburg(Panel 2) 10. CTJ(Panel 2) 11. Bentonville(Panel 1) 12. Fishers(Panel 2) First Out: 13. Dripping Springs(Panel 1) 14. Keller(Panel 1) 15. Homestead(Panel 2) 16. Centerville(Panel 2) 17. Bartlett(Panel 2) 18. Rockford(Panel 2) 19. James Bowie(Panel 1) 20. Carroll(Panel 2) 21. Center Grove(Panel 2) 22. Kiski Area(Panel 2) 23. Dartmouth(Panel 2) 24. Morton(Panel 1) 25. Nation Ford(Panel 2)
Note: Due to only doing Top 25 I only put Panel 1, and Panel 2. No top 11’s or Bottom 8’s because I felt in order to do that I’d have to do all of semis. Also the placements for finals will change after semis most likely so it didn’t make sense to do that.

1. Carmel (ge) 2. Avon (v) 3. Woodlands 4. Hebron (m) 5. William Mason 6. Blue Springs 7. Pearland 8. Round Rock 9. CTJ 10. Fishers 11. Brownsburg 12. Bentonville
13. Keller 14. Dripping springs 15. James Bowie 16. Homestead
I am indiana-biased and these will be wrong but might as well add my thoughts! I really like carmel’s show and in previous years i’ve been on the avon over carmel train. I’d love to see Avon in that one spot but i really think carmel just has them even after state. I’m fairly confident both Brownsburg and Fishers will be in finals. I have Fishers over Brownsburg simply based off how fun Fishers is. Fishers just has so much room to grow. A point jump like they had from Indy SR to state has me convinced they can jump into the 90s no problem. Brownsburg will make finals, their show is beautiful and i much prefer it over The Uninvited. What worries me is they did not grow nearly as much as Fishers did. Of course they have not maxed out their show but their max seems lower than Fishers max. Don’t get me wrong Brownsburg could totally get a 92/93 and surprise me.
non indiana thoughts: Woodlands has my heart forever, always loved them and this year is no different. Hebron is great and the music is nails but it’s just not inspiring imo. William Mason coming in hot with another beautiful visual program, i’m in awe. Round Rock has a beautiful show as well, they are comfortably in and honestly they could go as high as 5 for me. CTJ has a great quirky show. always a fan of the shows that are unique, when someone talks about a flamingo show you are going to think CTJ. Bentonville is really 50/50 with Keller for me. it could go either way and i wouldn’t be torn seeing one of them miss. those who i have in finals but did not mention here are shows i have not seen, so those rankings are based off what i’ve heard. Best of luck to all who are associated with every program this weekend, everyone will be awesome regardless of what those pesky judges think!

I push pit/props for my kids’ band so I’m super excited for my annual trip to Friday morning prelims. I don’t have the time to get anything out of a Box5 subscription so that is really my only chance to see a great lineup of bands from somewhere other than the tunnel. I’ll be there for BoCo at 8:00 am and will probably have to leave after Marian Catholic.
I told my family this evening that it feels like we’re ratcheting up way to the top of the roller coaster and about to head down the crazy, long, but all-too-short week.
Stay healthy and sane everyone!

Pre-prelims-
1. Avon 2. Carmel 3. Hebron 4. The Woodlands 5. Blue Springs 6. William Mason 7. Pearland 8. Brownsburg 9. Round Rock 10. Bentonville 11. Fishers 12. CTJ
Going in to this week and I am thinking 97+ at finals, maybe new record GN's score. Blue Springs is obviously going to clean up in 3A. 4A, I can see caption changes among bands from semi's to finals. I am going with Avon to take finals because this is the best they have been musically in MANY years, IMO. Hebron/Carmel will battle out music. Avon/TW visual. GE is a tough one. Blue Springs enjoyed a very high score at St. Louis. I don't see them knocking off the top four but judging has been quite interesting this year.

No idea how that top 4 is shaking out, but one way or another, Avon will be in that top 3. They’ve been there every year for 17 years and I don’t think this is the year they miss, despite the strong competition.
Hebron has to take music, regardless of how much I love Carmel’s sound. I think that Woodlands takes visual, and Avon takes GE. Carmel might take the win without a caption.

Are there any publicly available videos of Marion Catholic? They are something of a Schrodinger‘s cat in my mind at the moment.
At the moment, I think that people are predicting them to win class A, based on the fact that they are, indeed Marian Catholic. Little else would seem to be known, unless there are videos that I simply have not come across.

Been hearing about Grand Nats since my oldest first joined band 11 years ago, and getting to experience it during my youngest's senior year is incredibly exciting. Getting to see some of the bands we've been hearing about and seeing online in person for the first time is going to be an amazing experience.

One of my favorite times is meeting band parents from other groups, which usually happens down in the loading dock once you’ve gotten all the stuff down the ramp. It’s especially fun when you’re next to a group that has a ton of stuff, like Mason’s big tarp rolls or Brownsburg’s props last year, and you get to hear about all the interesting challenges they’ve had to solve. Soak it all in and have a great time! And if you’re not from around here welcome to Indianapolis!

I've never been to Indy, so it's a first for me (and many of our group) on that front as well.

GN Finalist (random order)
Woodlands - Top 12 GE juggernaut and after that SASR run they are coming in to win undeniably! 10 years over due maybe?.
Carmel - Least demanding music content of all finalist but design and individual talented visuals are fantastically carrying the program to the top yet again. Gaines is all I got to say! 🎤 drop
William Mason - This program cleans up so well by November. Wonderful music selection. Woodwinds ❤️ Top half.
Avon - individual visuals and GE on another level! Music book is not so demanding but the content is so well put together it’s almost flawless. Harloff coming in to make a statement his first year!
Blue Springs - Amazing overall content especially coming in with a 93 at St. Louis! I still see them in the 6-7 bubble considering the level of competition in finals but B Springs is always a GE force! Sweeping AAA.
Keller- Always the dark horse but they are definitely in at finals GN’s. Maybe not Music Caption contender but they score very high in ME and individual!
Hebron - My least ranked visuals at the Top 4 but music and marching fundamentals are just insane plus that GE is undeniable! Music caption all day and no doubt they have an ace up their sleeves (cleaned up those visuals) so I for one can’t wait! Musical Effect is going to be spectacular at LOS. Bar none!
Pearland - Their final music and design production and placement is going to surprise everyone at Nat’s imo. I see them in the 6-8 but top half if they have a run I know they are capable of!
Brownsburg - love love loved them at ISSMA! So excited to what this programs brings these next couple of years. Possible Top 6 hopefully even make the illustrious ABC conversation soon?.
Round Rock - Overall show concept and design gets them into finals imo. I feel their strength is music and are amongst the best is the country plus they have the most Nat’s experience of any TX band in attendance so you never know That Trombone feature is GOAT contention! Can’t wait to see that show 3 times at Nats.
Bentonville - GE for days plus I love to promote programs from the south! Arizona gonna bring it to Nats.
Fishers, IN. Love the simplicity and playfulness of this years music content. GE for days and that is what gets you in finals at a BOA event.

Throwing out a few extremely random tips for Indy that I also posted on Reddit..
- Lucas Oil is cashless - bring credit or debit cards. There should be a "cash to card" machine by the food right behind the 200 level
- Be sure to have a clear bag to bring stuff in
- My favorite seats are the front row of 239 or 240 - you have extra leg room and no one in front of you. Just personal preference - I can't handle sitting up high.
- The pizza sucks, but the fries are pretty good. If they are open, Ben's Pretzels and Mandy's Ice Cream in the concourse are both local businesses and really tasty.
- The weather is supposed to be cold in the morning each day, but be pretty nice later in the day. The temp inside can really vary - I am usually a little chilly sitting in the stands.
- there are about 15 seats at the back of the 100s by the 50 that are reserved for directors during their performance. Don't try to sit there or stand along the wall. Really, don't try to stand along the wall at any time - security will come after you. Security is hired by Lucas Oil - BOA has no control over whether they are rude or clueless.
- I usually park in the north lot right across the street from the stadium. It's a short walk and easy in and out. $20 a day.
- Don't bother with the mall or the mall food court. They are all but deserted of anything worthwhile.
- The Southeast door is not a public entrance. Really, truly. Yes, I know it is closest to the ticket office, and yes, we will make you walk around to the public entrance.

Love this! 👆

Hopefully posting this isnt against the rules This show is incredibly difficult and Design quality is high. If theyre even remotely clean, I see this comfortably taking class A. I wouldn't say 'comfortably' taking anything, but the program is a well-designed one. I do not exactly love that ending, but there's a lot of depth there -- for a school of that size. They're a semis lock, in my view, but I'll be curious to see how they stack up with the A/AA bands (not just A).

Thank you for posting! I think this is my favorite show design from them in a while, but I can't agree with 'comfortably.' I think they're a strong contender to win, but certainly not a lock.
