I could also hoard soft pretzels if there's any place selling them Ben’s Pretzels are mighty good - local business, too. Right out the door of the West Club. might as well support them by buying a lot of pretzels to eat during finals

Archbishop Alter is having a bit of a challenging day just before Grand Nationals. Probably good that they don't perform until Friday night.

Archbishop Alter is having a bit of a challenging day just before Grand Nationals. Probably good that they don't perform until Friday night. That's awful... no school should have to deal with that. A similar wave of false reports hit Kentucky schools a while back, including Murray and many others. In that case they caught the 'prankster' pretty quickly and put him on trial. Hope for a similar outcome here.

Currently headed up to Indianapolis now for the next few days for an exciting time!
Although for the past four years I have shared the field during awards at local and state circuit competitions and a couple BOA Regionals, this will be my first time EVER seeing bands in person from the front side. I have viewed the bands from behind waiting in bleachers for awards, or waiting in the end zone to push on. So, this will be a very exciting first experience if I had to take a guess.
I keep up with BOA and UIL and the other circuits, so I have some general understanding of what to expect, which bands are powerhouses, and some bands that could shock people. Are there anymore bands that any of you would suggest for me to look out for?

Thank you very much, I’ll be sure to check that out! And any recommendations on maybe saving a seat, or how much is food in the stadium usually? Just trying to get some extra little tips here and there, lol.

A jacket should be sufficient for seat saving when you take a food break - it also helps to make friends with those around you to help watch each other's seats. Food is basic stadium fare - hot dogs, burgers, fries (decent), pizza (bad), popcorn, candy, sodas. There are also some vendors of ice cream, soft pretzels, cotton candy, etc. on the concourse. You'll find items like tenderloin sandwiches and BBQ at certain food stadium food stands.

What you can do is clap as they line up to go over to perform- or as they come back after a performance. But please let them have their rehearsal time in private.

I’ve just spent too many years as part of “guard duty” keeping people out for most of the practices.

I can't wait cause it'll be my first trip to Indy and I'm excited to see so many bands for the first time and also meet plenty of people along the way! Good for you, abtwitch!! You are going to have a blast. Two things that I adore more than much else in this activity is seeing or hearing about the awe that non-Texans experience when attending BOASA for the first time and hearing the relentless, unmatched top-to-bottom quality all weekend - just amazing band after amazing band after amazing band - and, equally, seeing or hearing about the awe that Texans experience seeing the band diversity that is offered from across the country for the first time at GN. That really is what makes GN a more interesting contest (don't read that as more competitive) than BOASA, and it is so much fun to experience live. You will see bands like Dartmouth & Center Grove that are so individual-focused, and whose wind books are scored so non-traditionally, that it looks like an entirely different activity. Drumlines offering more depth and complexity than anything you would ever hear at BOASA (although that is slowly changing), and more layered front ensemble writing from Avon than anyone is even coming close to offering from Texas. You'll see color guards like you've never seen before (although that is now swiftly changing too - thank you, TW!), and not just guards, but said color guard prowess & legacy bleeding into visual design in a way that is nowhere near being replicated in Texas (yet). If you can catch them in Prelims, it's so fun to see bands like Blue Valley or Cabell Midland (Blue Valley has a small chance of making Semis) - i.e., the handful of bands that attend GN each year who are the best representatives from their not-as-band-heavy states. You'll hear way different schools of thought when it comes to balancing an ensemble - the pinnacle of which is Mason's rich, chocolatey sound - always a stark contrast to the bright, brassy Eddie Green/U.H. sound that most Texas bands bring (I love both and it's fun to hear them back to back). You'll see power & passion from the top KY A bands that honestly I have yet to find matched by small-school bands elsewhere in the country. Speaking of small bands, if Alter makes Semis again, their tiny-band approach to show design is also something you won't find within the TX borders. You'll see a lot of the inverse of the mid-level TX problem (great band, mediocre show) in groups like Miamisburg, PCEP, Nation Ford - decently-playing & -moving bands whose designs punch far above their skill levels. The top of AA alone will be a lesson in different approaches to the activity between Dartmouth, Kiski, & Morton. And therein lies the fun of attending GN that really isn't replicated at regional contests across the country - the way all of these disparate bands approach our activity. It's a ton of fun to watch it all in one contest.

I've been at UIL State the past 2 weeks and it's the first time I've seen this many small programs and that alone has been a refreshing change of pace from the in your face big Texas sound which I adore.
