Primarily watching this regional today. John C. Birdlebough (formerly Phoenix HS), Upper Moreland, and Roslyn were the standouts for me in the first SA block. Unionville should be up there, too, but they were quite dirty so it's hard to tell where they'll land.

I was very confused just now watching Gates Chili. They popped an 80 out of the gate this year at the first regional in Salem, MA, then dropped down to a 73 a week later at the Philadelphia regional. I remember watching that regional and thinking the 73 was a fair score and they were incredibly over scored that first week, and it made me worry for all the other units that had competed in Salem.
Then I watched them just now and it felt like I was watching a completely different show from the one performed in Philadelphia. I don't mean in terms of performance quality ... I mean it was a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT show. That's when I realized Gates Chili actually has two Independent A guards competing in WGI this season. This is the one that popped an 80 out of the gate in week 1, and I can completely see why.
The guard's design maturity and skillset makes me feel like they're misclassified. This is an Independent Open guard disguised as an Independent A guard. This is a very mature show design, the content and variety is high, and their movement quality is superb. While I feel like it's an Open Class skillset on display, they are not performing it just yet at an Open Class finalist level, which is why they've probably been floating under the radar in terms of promotion. If they pop a 90 today, IO is in their future, without a doubt.
Gates Chili will likely come out ahead at this regional, but St. Ann's, JMU, Sonnor, and Carolina were other standouts for me. St. Ann's is still very dirty, but very much in the finalist conversation for Dayton. I'd be surprised if they don't make finals.

Tell me how Elizabeth does They were really fantastic. Beautifully designed show which is at a perfectly achievable level for the group they have. What stood out to me was the amount of equipment work they do compared to the rest of the field in Scholastic A - it's very much on the high end of the spectrum and members are constantly spinning somewhere on the floor, which is a good thing and a slight disadvantage right now. It's great because when they finally get closer to top-level execution, they're going to have the vehicle that stands out above the rest. It's a disadvantage right now because it takes longer to get to that point, so their execution scores will likely trail their content scores. But believe me, they are very, very close, and that scoring dynamic is a better situation to be in at this point in the season than having execution outscoring content. Right now I have John Birdlebough at the top of the class, but I can see Elizabeth slotting in anywhere in the range of Liverpool to Victor when comparing to Block 1. I really like how they combined the original My Immortal soundtrack with the Boyce Avenue version. It made it seem like more of a duet, which was especially appealing as one of the male and female guard members combined in the center of the floor for a brief waltz, where they were connected by their rifles rather than their bodies. Very creative stuff happening in this show.

Preliminary Scores Independent A - Round 1
1. Sonnor (LaPrairie, Quebec) 79.572. JMU Nuance A (Harrisonburg, VA) 77.483. High Voltage of Haddon Heights (Haddon Heights, NJ) 77.034. Introspection Independent (Endicott, NY) 75.315. Hatters Independent (Horsham, PA) 67.626. Winter Star (North Jersey, NJ) 66.637. 3rd Legend (St-Eustache, Quebec) 66.398. Les Eclipses - Junior (Longueil, Quebec) 63.06Independent A - Round 2
1. Les Eclipses (Longueuil, Quebec) 82.642. Gates Chili Independent Winter Guard (Gates Chili, NY) 82.273. St. Anns (Dorchester, MA) 80.814. Carolina Visual Productions (Garner, NC) 80.795. Westshoremen (Harrisburg, PA) 74.926. Polaris (Bethlehem, PA) 71.217. Sonnor Junior (LaPrairie, QB) 66.52
Well, now that scores are in, I'm even more confused. I can't understand why Gates Chili isn't miles ahead of everyone else in the field right now. The only two things I can think of are 1) They received a penalty, or 2) There's some type of judging dynamic where the content simply isn't aligning with A Class sheets. From an execution perspective, I can see somewhere in the 80-85 range, but the content stands out far above the rest. Perhaps content that can't be achieved near the same level is actually detrimental on these sheets? Les Eclipses in first is even more of a surprise. I'm very impressed with what they can achieve and produce with only SIX members on the floor, but the content is not comparable (nor was it achieved, in my opinion) to the level of some of the others near the top. At times, there were only four or five members performing with one or two sitting out on the edge of the floor, and in those cases they were still not achieving at the same level as others. Again, only my opinion, but a huge, huge surprise.

Arlington, Elizabeth, Council Rock South, Mohonasen, and Salem were the standouts for me in the second Scholastic A block. Really curious where this group shakes out, but Arlington feels like the group that will come out on top this round.

Bethel really stood out in Scholastic Open, and I think that's partially because I really didn't know what to expect. Whoever is writing the equipment book and teaching those kids technique is doing an incredible job. They handled a difficult book very effortlessly, though I know they just made it look that way.
Shenendehowa should come out on top this afternoon. They will likely be solidly ahead in the performance captions. Where I'm completely clueless is how this show will do in the design and GE captions, as it's largely dependent on the narration and video screens as a tribute to Robin Williams. I'm thinking Shenendehowa, Bethel, and Dartmouth will be the top 3 in this class. Dartmouth will be a crowd favorite this season with a super fun show. How far they'll go will depend on execution taking a big step forward.

Independent Open was such a treat from top to bottom, but Main Line Independent has turned into an absolute powerhouse of a guard. Nearly 40 strong in Open Class and an aggressive show filled with massive ensemble moments. They're my pick to take this regional, and I see them on a path to World Class in just a few years.

Everything shook out about where I imagined it would, with the exception of Independent A. Gates Chili's score is still incredibly puzzling to me. After looking at the recaps, some of my concerns appear to be valid. Their execution scores are wildly different than their content scores in some cases.
In prelims, the movement judge had their execution 7 points lower than content, and one of the GE judges had their execution score 13 points lower than their content score - content nearly Box 5 and execution barely above the lower end of Box 4. I haven't seen that much of a difference since Ayala's unfortunate semi-finals run a few years back when absolutely nothing seemed to click.
In finals, four judges had their execution scores between 6-8 points lower than their content scores. Such a disconnect isn't hugely surprising to me. The prelims equipment judge had their content in Box 5 ... with nearly a month left to go in the season. I'm getting the sense that judges are having a very difficult time knowing exactly how to evaluate this show on A-Class sheets.
Fusion beating Sac in prelims (gross score, pre-penalty) is also not a huge surprise. Sac had one of the messiest runs I've seen out of them in quite some time. Things clicked a bit more in finals, but I can see Fusion finishing higher than them in Dayton. They have an incredible show.
