I haven't been able to get the time to sit down and mash something out, unfortunately, but Sunday finals was very fun to watch.
The story of the day was a loooot of mistakes and drops (which is probably to be expected as groups are trying to nail in all major design points before getting to the details).
SA: I didn't get catch any SA groups before Horizon, so my view's colored by the last few. Creekview was a spectacular take as always, but the group was downed a bit by a sloppy performance. I think the show has enough to get into SA Finals at Dayton, but the performance wasn't there. I found Lexington to be a bit dry in the content department, but the maze concept is a nice breath of fresh air in the whole field. I'm wondering if Lexington will try to add a bit more going into Dayton because they were pretty clean on Sunday. The show may not need it, but it'll give them boost to be a lock for SA finals.
IA: I absolutely loved Beau Monde. With any group, the abstract concept and all the deep, vivid colors would clash but BM paired the two that painted a unique take. The sense I get with the design team is they are very fresh still, not to mention they've figured out what tools works yet. Count me as an intrigued spectator in the following years. GSU is so absurdly good this year. The experience in the group clearly is pushing the show further up the ranks significantly. I don't see how this doesn't medal as is right in IA. If this group of performers is returning next year, I'd like to see them push for IO finals.
SO: Seymour's adorable. So much to munch on design-wise- the integration of food props was terrific. The show's appropriately calibrated to the kids on the group, which leads to the lowered score. I actually had Byrnes and DB neck-to-neck prior to the results- Byrnes with the stronger vocabulary, DB with the (way) better show. I did hear later on this wasn't a strong performance for Byrnes so I'm not too surprised about the drop in scores. DB takes an unexplored take on Frosty and they do such an emotionally rendering display of it. Oveido has both fronts covered this year. The props being sooooo far back is quite irksome for me, but the introduction of colors to symbolize history's progress is great- but the effect is quadrupled even more being the sterile y2k colors (the disgusting ones, hah). I don't know the state of SO right now and whether this is a medal show (I don't think so), but this is at least a mid-placement finals show.
IO: Alta Marea has something rolling this year. AM just flexes and contracts the performers that it's such a treat to see how the visual drill develops amongst that chaos. There's some space for a tooooon of cleaning, so I wouldn't be surprised if AM can make that push up the ranks at Dayton. I'm less bullish on Georgia IO, but I see the space and rigid vision they have in this year's show. Very minimalistic, but I love the dashes of color they sprinkle in from the performer outfits and silks themselves to silently imply the carnage. Is there enough to grow, though? I'm not sure if I can visualize the growth as much as AM, but they could make it happen.
IW: Tampa Independent is my underdog darling for IW finals this year. Spectacular show that just keeps growing and growing beyond the first impression. Very light on their feet that provided a lot of incredible moments on those shaky stone podiums. I got the sense Tampa had a strong run that day, so I'm a tad worried whether ATL was or is close to the peak for Tampa. I'm hoping there's a bit more in tank for them come Dayton.
Etude is an absolute tear-jerker. The olde benches that rock back and forth provide so much metaphorical meanings at different points. I'd rather wrap this up quickly, but I love shows that give so much meaning in clever ways and Etude falls right into that definition. Etude for medal? I hope so. This show is deserving of one.
I've been consistent in my group of friends of my belief that Paramount has a GOAT show this year. No question. An incredible run at IW finals will put them squarely in that conversation. But not this past Sunday. There's so, so, so, so, so, so much demand evident (even from their debut back at SAPA Kennesaw Mountain) that I expected them to take a little while to clean up. The Sunday run showed they were 100% capable, but not dialed in yet. We'll see in Dayton whether Paramount's playing for the easy championship or gritting it for the all-time legacy.
