Surreal to see the PNW regional actually become a possibility again, for real this time. Eight years in the making!

I’m also thinking this could still be held in the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, ID. It kisses the Washington border. An indoor venue will go a very long way for this show.

This is a cool one for me. I know so little about the scene in the PNW. I hope attendance is good.
Also, someone call Magrath.

A director friend of mine in the PNW has said he was told by a BOA staff member that this show would probably be beginning of November with the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, ID as a likely venue.
I would bank on a November 2nd date, as there are football games the two weekend prior.

I hope we get to see some Montana bands. Havre did compete in Southern Idaho at the Mountain West Invitational who Green Canyon (UT) has won in 2023. Normally Gallatin, Bozeman, and once Havre would travel to Washington to compete which is much further than going to Moscow, so fingers crossed we see them. I do hate that it's a little too north for some Wyoming bands. I would love to see Kelly Walsh who has been growing in status for some year, and Cheyenne schools, Riverton, and Wheatland, Star Valley who does compete out of state like WA, ID, UT, and CO. I would also love to see some Idaho bands which barely get any representation. What's interesting since 2020 all three top tier ID bands has won District III Timberline (2021), Eagle (2022), Mountain View (2023), and constantly stays in the top 3. Madison who won Idaho ISU Mountain West Invitational and normally compete in the SEI Marching Band Circuit/USBands, Nampa, Weiser, Centennial, Owyhee a school who just recently opened up in 2021 and who are on fire, Ridgevue, Borah, High Desert who just combined last year producing some good scores, etc... I think we should look back on the last Moscow Regional for fun. ( 1985) Moscow, ID: University of Idaho - Prelims1. 75.70: University, WA 2. 74.60: Sprague, OR 3. 68.75: Capital, ID 4. 62.70: Magrath, AB (Canada) 5. 62.40: Central Valley, WA 6. 61.25: Mead, WA 7. 60.75: Port Angeles, WA 8. 55.10: Hermiston, OR 9. 54.30: Borah, ID 10. 50.70: Moses Lake, WA ------------------------------------------- 11. 48.40: Shadle Park, WA 12. 41.55: Burley, ID 13. 40.90: West Valley, WA 14. 35.55: The Dallas, WA I can't wait for this regional.

I think anyone who doesn't live out here forgets how truly expansive the west is. Even though Wyoming shares a border with Idaho, Wheatland is a whopping 14.5 hours from Moscow. St. George is only a 10 hour drive and we've never seen any Casper or Cheyenne area band dip a toe into the BOA waters. Northwestern WY bands like Riverton or Star Valley might be better candidates, but both are still over 10 hours from NW Idaho - and there are legit no major routes north or west out of NW Wyoming. Even Harve MT is still 8 hours away from NW Idaho - north central/northeast rural Montana is in my opinion the most isolated area in the country outside of Alaska - Havre absolutely redefines being in the middle of nowhere. You're at least a 12 hour drive from the nearest major/international airport or major U.S. city - or roughly the distance from Chicago or Detroit to Atlanta - it's crazy to comprehend if you live east of the Mississippi. U.S. Route 2 across the northern MT plains is so unbelievably desolate for hundreds of miles - and Havre is the population center on the 7-hour route at 9,000 people!

I'm not oblivious to how big states are out west. I went on a family road trip from PA to the west. I'm glad I didn't have drive. That's why I said I hated that it was too far north for WY, and MT having to drive through mountains is too much. But all three Montana bands has gone through Moscow, ID to compete in the WSU Championships, the only issue I feel like is the fee to compete in a late season BOA Regional is way more than entering a local Washington Competition in Pullman, WA which is just a 17-minute drive from Moscow, ID btw. I do think Idaho State University in SW Idaho would be great, as it is a shorter distance for both states as well UT and CO, but the only problem is that it is a small venue. For Example: Havre, MT to Moscow, ID ≈ 8 hr 34 min 523.9 mi Havre, MT to Pocatello, ID ≈ 7hr 45 min 518 mi Bozeman, MT to Moscow, ID ≈ 7 hr 45 min 465.9 mi Bozeman, MT to Pocatello, ID ≈ 4hr 7 min 246.5 mi Gallatin, MT to Moscow, ID ≈ 7 hr 3 min 451.3 mi Gallatin, MT to Pocatello, ID ≈ 4 hr 3 min 244.5 mi Star Valley, WY to Moscow, ID ≈ 10 hr 25 min 656.5 mi Star Valley, WY to Pocatello, ID ≈ 2 hr 12 min 132.9 mi Wheatland, WY to Moscow, ID ≈ 14 hr 53 min 977.6 mi Wheatland, WY to Pocatello, ID ≈ 7hr 46 min 506.5 mi But the whole point of Moscow is to attract WA and OR bands, so ISU-Pocatello just doesn't work, so I don't expect any of these bands to come, but I love, love, love, LOVE to see them here.

If this event is on Nov. 02, it would be on the same day as NWAPA Championships so might not see some of OR heavy hitters like West Salem and Grant Pass.

While we are still unsure of the date, what I am sure of is that facilities in the area are being toured on Monday and Tuesday by BOA with a couple of PNW band directors. Hopefully this means there will be an update either way regarding this show sometime next month.

The last BOA regional in Moscow ID was indeed in 1985 at the University of Idaho. A BOA regional (or MBA as it was known then) also took place at this venue in 1979 and 1980. In 1979, Skyview HS UT won their first and only regional title there. In 1980, we believe the winner was University HS, WA. This was their first of two regional titles. They would of course also win the 1985 Moscow regional.
If this regional is indeed held at the University of Idaho in Moscow, it will be the 4th time a regional has been held here.

If the regional happens at all, it will be held at one of those locations. I am pulling for Kibbie as it is indoors!

Got an update from a director friend who finished day one of touring facilities today. - BOA officials said to him, and he quotes, "There will be a show at one of these two locations [WSU in Pullman, WA or Kibbie Dome in Moscow, ID], it is just a matter of which one, and what date, depending on football."
- He was encouraged to help spread the word to other directors in the region that the show will be happening.
- Most surprisingly, he told me that BOA is making a 3-year commitment to holding events in the PNW region. No more one and done. They seem to want to give it a few years to see if it establishes itself.
So, it sounds as though BOA in the PNW is seemingly a guarantee through at least 2026. I really hope it manages to pull a respectable amount of bands this year and start gaining that momentum for the near future. I think even 12-15 would be promising for the first year. Addendum: October 12th was singled out as a potential date if the Kibbie Dome was selected as venue.

Another update.
The Kibbie Dome was toured today, and it sounds as though BOA is leaning heavily towards this venue, due to the fact that it’s indoors, they’ve held shows there before (in the ancient past), and their football schedule is already out.
WSU is going through a whole bunch of stuff with their football situation right now so it’s not likely we’ll see a show there this year.
They also seem to be pushing for an October 12th date, which is unfortunate because it conflicts with a NWAPA show in Spokane, and a lot of heavy hitters in the area (Ridgeline, Mead, Central Valley, Mt. Spokane, University) have already expressed that they’d rather go to that show than BOA. November 2nd is the NWAPA Championships, so that’s also not a good date.
There are, however, going to be talks about possibly making the BOA show a qualifier to participate in the NWAPA Championships. This may help boost interest in the BOA show.
In any case, BOA has acknowledged this first year may be a flop in terms of attendance and turnout, but they still seem committed to the three-year plan to see if it finds its footing.
American Fork has also apparently expressed interest in attending this regional, and BOA seems to be pushing for them to attend. Which… honestly, I hope they don’t. It’s going to be one world class AAAA band against everyone else, which are mostly A and AA schools that would simply be demolished. It would be another effortless win for them with very little value or merit, other than another trophy in the case. I think BOA believes having AF come up will help draw a bigger crowd, and they might be right about that, but it certainly won’t help to draw more bands to the show. I hope it’s fresh faces and bands specific to the region for the first year or two. Keep it at a level playing field to start. (Love you though, AF ❤️)
In any case, good or bad, the show will be happening. Just waiting to solidify a date and announce.

When I see the 1980s referenced as the "ancient past" instead of just the past, I will admit, it kind hurts a bit. Ouch. But I guess I can now say that I lived in and vividly remember "ancient times" LOL
