I've been wanting a Sea of Thieves music inspired show for probably 5 years now. I hope they nail it. That game has some of the best thematic music. And I love pirates. Win win.

Not a reveal, but I heard through the grapevine that William Masons show this year will be “very different” from their current formula, quoting Cartwright. Have also heard they are aiming for Grand National Champion… although that might just be something they say every year! Regardless, sounds like good stuff is coming out of Mason.

Pepperell HS GA BEWITCHED featuring the following musical selections: --"No One Mourns the Wicked" from Wicked: The Musical--"Black Magic Woman" by Santana --"Bewitched" by Laufey --"I Put A Spell On You" by Annie Lennox ( video) Once again, I am asking bands to show more respect for composers. "I Put a Spell on You" was written by Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Herb Slotkin in 1956 and first recorded by Hawkins that year. Some 57 years would pass before Annie Lennox covered it. "Black Magic Woman" was indeed a big hit for Santana, but it was written two years earlier by Peter Green for his band, a little outfit you might have heard of called Fleetwood Mac. Laufey's "Bewitched" was co-written by her and Spencer Stewart. And the songs in Wicked were of course written by Stephen Schwartz.

At least in the case of Hawkins/Slotkin vs Lennox, it could well just be down to how easy it is to get rights to using the piece. If cheaper access to Lennox's version exists, great for Pepperell. Same for Santana vs Fleetwood Mac. With Laufey w/ or w/o listing Stewart, could again just be down to how the rights are maintained, but from a different angle. Not going to excuse the lack of nod to Schwartz.

Not going to excuse the lack of nod to Schwartz. Well, in the case of these songs, neither Annie Lennox nor Carlos Santana are the composers, and I don't think the licensing goes through them or their representatives. If the band's arrangements are heavily derived on the arrangements Lennox and Santana performed, maybe those arrangers get a cut. (But in my opinion, neither cover version is really so different from the originals as to merit that kind of credit.) I don't object to Pepperell also crediting Lennox and Santana for popularizing (or further popularizing) these songs. I do object to the actual songwriters' names going missing. This is super basic stuff. When all the BOA and DCI and other marching videos got pulled down from their respective platforms in 2014, it was because the rightsholders were not getting their cuts. Now, I happen to think that the greedy corporation who controlled the rights to so much music was going over the top to make a point, but the underlying issue was legit. Without the original composers, ain't much happening on the football field. And I picked on Pepperell today pretty much as the first one that caught my eye, but band after band after band fails to credit composers, and that's a crappy thing to do.

I'd like someone to play "The Air That I Breathe" (the Hollies hit by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood from which "Creep" was adapted).

You are not permitted to "copyright" an arrangement when it comes to securing arranging rights. You can, of course, copyright actual recorded performances of the song, but unless the band is sampling the performance in some way, that's not relevant to what's being discussed here. Listing the artist of the song you're doing is frankly just easier, and it makes more sense than often listing songs that can have up to a dozen songwriters (obviously not this specific situation). What is announced at a show is completely irrelevant when it comes to arranging rights and "rightsholders not getting their cut." That all happens behind the scenes, and as long as the money gets paid, I can guarantee you no one involved in any of these songs cares what's being announced at a marching band competition.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion about arrangers. I'm not personally familiar with composers, but I can guarantee you that some other creative artists, like playwrights, can get very picky about their billing. They want their names out there, everywhere, in large type above the title if at all possible. But regardless, I just think it's bad for musicians not to give proper credit to composers. If marching bands are going to the trouble to create announcement videos, they have the bandwidth to identify the people who created the music somewhere in that production. I do get that there may not be time during the pre-show announcement to get all the names out there, but almost every competition has a printed (or digitally accessible) program, yet even in those texts, the composers' names too often go missing. Bands claim to have educational missions. This is one little step toward justifying those claims.
