That Cleveland score is a bit eye popping for this early. FWIW I heard from someone who works with one of the groups that competed that they felt like the Winds scores were pretty inflated.

Hello, Catawba Ridge. That is a score. Deserved, I think. My understanding is that they have actually asked WGI to evaluate them for promotion to WSW. Let’s pump the brakes here a little bit and actually look at the recap. First, you should always tread carefully with the Winds scores when they’re being judged by the same judges as the percussion groups. Those judges usually have far less training in Winds and frankly don’t always know what they’re doing. This was seen recently as Sourh Jones was scoring mid-80s in the MIA a couple weeks ago with a percussion panel and then got a 77 last night with actual WGI Winds judges last night. In addition, I don’t know who “P. Martinez” is, but if you look across the entire show their scores were consistently way higher than everyone else’s, especially at the top of the classes. Looking specifically at CR, their music and visual scores are right in line with most of the upper level Open Class groups are doing around the country and they got spiked a really high Effect score by a person that was spiking numbers all day. And that gets magnified in Winds when the Effect score is 40% of the overall, and the other two captions are 30%. Moral of the story: I’m sure CR is awesome this year, but that’s probably a bit inflated.

Obviously an outstanding percussionist and percussion judge. He also had basically every Winds group scored 10 points higher than the other two judges did. Obviously they’re judging different captions but he was judging on an inflated scale.

Sure, which is why it’s folly to cross compare between competitions and circuits. Grains of salt abound. But still, even if it’s a couple points of inflation due to that 90+ GE caption, that is a strong statement by CR at a still-early point in March.

That concludes the 2024 Indoor Winds season for AIA and CWEA. Now that all the scores are in I have to say that I am starting to agree more with ohioguy2 regarding the scoring and judging in CWEA. I believe that the judges got the right order throughout the season but the numbers are way off from what I believe they should be. Both in the scores themselves and the spreads between groups. There has been a lot of inconsistency from week to week that I think does not necessarily reflect the show designs and performances. That said, well done to all of the groups! I have thoroughly enjoyed this season and I'm already looking forward to next year...after another Fall marching band season of course!

In checking out these recaps, it’s interesting to note that of the 6 judges who judged Winds, one of them is an actual WGI Winds finals judge (Mike Tarr on visual). It looks like he was usually the “lowest” number for almost every group, especially the Open class groups. Take that for what you will.
