I said this last year too, but wow I love the new Lawrence Township identity. This show is so much fun and extremely engaging and you can tell the kids are loving performing it.

I saw them for the first time last night. I'm torn on this because on one hand I found the show to be quite entertaining and look forward to seeing it again...but on the other hand it's kind of a direction that I don't like seeing marching band go. If that makes sense.

As the season comes to an end, thought it would be good to see who everyone’s favorite shows are this fall. When it comes to Indiana, my favorite shows are: Avon, Homestead & Carroll Outside of Indiana: O’Fallon, Broken Arrow, Leander (they’re playing Britney Spears Toxic. How could I not love them!)

I really struggle with Lawrence Township. Yes, they are making crowd pleasers BUT being an Indiana resident, I miss the old Lawrence (Central) shows that were just plain weird! I mean they had a show that was based on the typical day in the life of a LAMP.... I was hoping that Lawrence Township was going to continue down that road (as they did the first season) but they have changed their identity. Now they produce shows that are full of singing which is not my cup of tea. They are definitely crowd pleasers though and audiences seem to enjoy them.

When it comes to Indiana bands, I am really loving the Carroll show. They have stepped up their game this year. I also really enjoy the Avon, Carmel, and Homestead shows.
As far as out of Indiana, I really like Broken Arrow, Mustang, Blue Springs, Tarpon Springs, Ronald Reagan, and Flower Mound.
Lots of really good shows this year! Great year to enjoy watching some fun marching bands!

Just gonna name a whole bunch that I love, no particular order other than Leander and Keller being by far my favorites
Vandegrift Westwood Westlake Avon Broken Arrow Mustang Keller Central Haltom
Also I haven't been able to catch as many streams as I'd like, so there's a whole bunch of shows I haven't seen that would probably make my list without question.

Best GE for me is Broken Arrow. I want to see that band live one day!
Most Fun—the Mustang Band and their dinosaurs.
Vandy wins my Most Beautiful award.
Biggest Wow award goes to Ronald Reagan and their 90 member guard. This show is spectacular to behold.
I’ll have a lot more after BOA San Antonio and Grand Nationals are over.

I seriously can't get enough of Leander's show this year. It's phenomenal!! All the right elements are there. The meaty opener with all those crunchy impact chords, Britney's Toxic which is just too much fun, the beautiful Karl Jenkins ballad, 1812 Overture randomly as the closer but somehow super fitting, the nuclear power plant cooling towers that constantly reshape the field....I love it all!! I love that the whole thing is so aggressive and unapologetic, from the neon colors to the in-your-face music. I also love that they're going all in and that everything seems to be "radioactive" over at Leander right now. I love it when a show theme overtakes a group of parents & students for a whole fall season and permeates everything they do! Makes me happy. Anyway. We should all be talking about this show more, and LeanderMomma is far too modest to plug her band incessantly, even when they've struck gold with a show. It looks like a blast to teach and perform!!!!

It looks like a blast to teach and perform!!!! Ha, I just don’t want to be *that* person. 😉😁 But I do think it’s the best Leander show to date...packed with powerful music, masterful runs and drill, some bits of fluff and fun, some parts that make you think, others that make your heart beat faster, and a phenomenal closer that makes you want to burst out of your seat in exultation (ok that last part is probably just the Leander parents 🤣). They are adding some really cool things as expected, and I am so pumped for Leander to unleash this Toxic Beast on the Alamodome and Lucas Oil. We may not be in the running for a medal, but DANG this show is fantastic! You should see all all of the Radioactive stuff there is for sale on Amazon. We Leander mommas have gone a little crazy this year buying Radioactive earrings, accessories, balloons, you name it. It’s definitely an easy theme to accessorize to. Who knew? Alright, that’s enough homerism from me. I just can’t wait to see ALL of these phenomenal bands in the Alamodome this weekend.

They only went to a small local this year and one Regional and placed Mediocre, but Timber Creek (FL) honestly was rocking. Saw them live at the Orlando Regional and they were neck and neck with Park Vista (and I think musically had a chance to beat Wando). They’re a little diamond in the rough so keep an eye on them just in case of them upsetting any bands.

Many fans of the activity don't appreciate the subtle complexity of what Carmel puts on the field. "Eternal Beloved" is my favorite show this year. Absolutely everything has to do with the vampire love story narrative - from the beginning with the two characters in pure white contrasted with the intimidating red/black vampire guard. Of course, Gaines did a fantastic job with the drill; there's so much symbolism. See if you notice any of these moments next time you watch them: The opening hit of woodwinds/guard is a giant DNA double helix, symbolizing blood and two fates connected. When the male lead gets captured by the guard, the drill forms a giant coffin with a body inside that morphs into a "V" fang; the next set has a giant pair of bat wings, which leads into the ballad when the guard flies around with vampire capes, making them look like bats from a distance. The music is also symbolic, and haunting, with French horn quotes of Freddie Mercury singing, "who wants to live forever?" Which is a lovely contrast to the "does anybody know what we are living for?" medley from the woodwinds in the previous movement. The last set of the ballad is a giant arch that mirrors the stone arches that frame the field. My favorite moment is in the closer, when the music goes from dark to triumphant, the woodwinds form an enormous "infinity" symbol across the field around the two lovers. Ahh symbolism. Who knows who will take the Eagle this year -- Avon/Vandegrift/Hebron/etc. are incredible bands who execute very well, but in terms of artistry and intent, I think Carmel is on their own level. It's been a fun season! Agreed - I think Carmel's is a beautiful show, certainly underrated this year considering the depth and intricacy of the performance. My other picks - certainly much different - but fun to watch, Woodlands and CTJ.
