A trip down memory lane… I’ve been around the activity longer than I care to admit, so some of these missing shows I was able to locate based on remembering the show title, since the year doesn’t always appear in a Youtube search. Unfortunately, some of them are a bit bootleg or early season. As a side note, WGI actually does a great job of archiving their annual program books online, so this site is pretty helpful to track down show titles across the activity: issuu.com/wgisportofthearts - Each year’s book has a recap of the prior year finalist placements and show titles.

I think South Hills was one of the more intriguing groups in Open Class for a few years. Their drumline never played anything especially difficult, but their front ensemble was excellent, and Tony Nunez and team were always bringing something fresh and heavily story-driven to the activity with great electronics writing. They thrived on performing superbly designed shows with an emotional connection. When lighting and video were allowed in 2011, they were one of the first groups to successfully implement them in a show. Their 2012 show “Home” had a fully produced video presentation depicting a couple building a life together. The music was partially original, and partially comprised of music that we were hearing in the marching arts for the first time – Kimbra’s “Settle Down” and a little tune for their closer titled “Remember Me” by Thomas Bergersen that some of you may remember a fairly successful band from Oklahoma performing in the late 2010s. South Hills percussion 2010 was, to the best of my knowledge, the first time that piece was performed in the marching arts as it was released in 2012. Tony's design company launched this website, which included the show background and the video files they used during their production (paired with midis/rough drafts of the show music). Part 2 dives more into the design process. Pretty cool stuff!
