The Power Band Classic will be held at Lake Hamilton High School in Pearcy, AR on Oct. 14th, 2023. This is now listed as a Bands of America affiliate event. For several years pre-Covid, this was the one and only affiliate event. Good to see it back as such and that there was sufficient value seen to create other affiliate events.

Ok I was just genuinely curious. I had never heard of Pearcy and when I looked it up it said it was an unincorporated town of like 300. I had no idea that's where Lake Hamilton was located!

Is this actually in Pearcy or is it supposed to say Searcy? I went to college in Searcy. I’ve never heard of Pearcy either! I’ve definitely been to the actual Lake that is named Lake Hamilton tho. It’s near Hot Springs. I just assumed that the school was too!! (EDiT: I looked on the map and Pearcy actually isn’t far from Lake Hamilton. Absolutely gorgeous area!).

I had several friends who went to Harding and considered applying, myself. It seems like a great school! I also studied some maps after my snafoo because geography is important to me and I didn't like that I wasn't familiar with this town.

You’re right. I need to listen better!

This was a great show! 20 bands in prelims with a phenomenal panel of judges. Including Lake Hamilton, there were six bands who competed in Memphis, three of them finalists. I believe Arkadelphia placed in their class. Finals: 1. 84.800: Bryant* 2. 84.550: Cabot* 3. 82.700: Paragould* 4. 82.600: Greene County Tech* 5. 76.675: Greenwood 6. 76.600: Lakeside 7. 75.550: Arkadelphia* 8. 72.800: Benton 9. 72.200: DeQueen 10. 69.200: Greenbrier 11. 68.750: Ozark 12. 65.550: Fountain Lake *Competed in the Memphis Regional* Outstanding Music: Bryant H.S., AR Outstanding Visual: Cabot H.S., AR & Greene County Tech H.S., AR Outstanding General Effect: Bryant H.S., AR Congrats Bryant on their two-time consecutive win.

This is like a week late, but an explanation of Pearcy and Lake Hamilton.
Lake Hamilton the lake wraps around the west and south sides of Hot Springs proper. Lake Hamilton the school district covers the section of Garland County west of the HS city limit [snap a north/south line of longitude at the intersection of US-70 and Weston Road on a map] and south of Lake Ouachita.
The actual school buildings and district offices are about six miles west of the lake just south of US-70 on Adam Brown Road. If you get to 2 lane road heading west, you've gone too far. It is just far enough out in the boonies and has an agri program such that the College Board considers it a rural school for merit scholarship purposes [1300ish in 9-12.... but rural, go figure].
The really confusing part is where "Pearcy" comes from. The district has three zip codes--71913 which is the Hot Springs National Park zip just on the lake, 71964 Pearcy with the post office about another 4 miles west of the school on US-70/Airport Road, and 71968 Royal with the post office pretty much dead north of the school on US-270/Albert Pike. The school is in the 71964 zip, thus the Pearcy mailing address that the competition PA announcers use.
And if that wasn't confusing enough, there are place names for three former/ long-disapparated post offices between HS and Pearcy Post Office on 70/Airport Road: Rockwell [Google Maps and Mapquest] on the west side of the 70 lake bridge, Pleasant Hill just west of the Marion Anderson stoplight, and Hempwallace at Adam Brown/ Sunshine Road, which is where the school is. You will occasionally hear people in the neighborhood refer to the area as "Hempwallace" rather than Pearcy. And, wait, there's more! There is one more former post office, Sunshine, between Hempwallace and Royal, which is where Sunshine Road [AR-227] gets its name.
Hope that helps.
