I would love to see some Louisiana and Mississippi bands. 😩 Dutchtown won States with their Wednesday show, and Central Lafourche both on the up and up, and Lafayette in 3rd at States with a beautiful show as well, St. Amant, and E.D. White Catholic which is the perfect contender for Class 1A who placed in top 8 at States. Imagine South Jones, DeSoto Central, and Hernando, Central Lafourche, w/Jenison, Morton, Catawba and maybe Kiski I would explode You've got your wish with South Jones!

Kalida and Norwood are surprises for me.
Norwood, which is bordered on all sides by Cincinnati, hosts an OMEA contest but hasn't qualified for state finals in a few years. I saw them last year at the Buckeye Invitational, where they finished fourth of seven bands in their class.
Kalida, in northwest Ohio, may be the smallest school in Ohio to field a competing marching band. OHSAA puts their 9th-11th grade enrollment at 139. They usually qualify for state finals and often get a superior rating there. Sometimes I agree with the judges about that.
(It's probably obvious, but Kalida is pronounced "kuh-LYE-duh".)

No, seriously though 😂 I’m going to attempt to put something together but I get a headache every time I look at that list. At least having such a strong lineup makes the decision to make the drive to Indy easier because semifinals is going to be such a show

Need a boahistorybuff opinion on if this is the deepest GN of all time It has to between this year and 2016. If we're just talking the competitiveness of getting into finals, I think 2021 would take the cake. But getting into semis is what the majority of bands in attendance are trying (or hoping) to accomplish.

I knew this was shaping up to be a massive Grand Nationals, but I don't think I realized until I sat down to graph it out how deep the list was. I've got 75 bands showing up - at least at this point in the pre-season - with a chance of making Semis. Woof.
7 Finalist Locks, no matter how you slice it:
Avon (IN) Broken Arrow (OK) Carmel (IN) Cedar Park (TX) (not saying they're top half, but without the director changes Leander has had, consistency keeps them as a lock) Dobyns-Bennett (TN) (not saying they're guaranteed to place above the bubbles listed below, but they've made it in 5 out of 5 prior attempts - they're a lock) Tarpon Springs (FL) William Mason (OH)
12 Finalist Bubbles (at least as of pre-season):
American Fork (UT) Bridgeland (TX) Brownsburg (IN) Castle (IN) Fishers (IN) Jenks (OK) Leander (TX) Mustang (OK) O'Fallon Township (IL) Prosper (TX) Rosemount (MN) Union (OK) I don't necessarily know what to make of the 3 OK groups listed, who have had such varied seasons since Covid, but that's neither here nor there. This is an overview of the contest as a whole.
8 Semis Locks - again, pre-season, a tier that will inevitably contain some bands that fall short of the Semis mark come November, but as of now, it's pretty tough to make a case for any of these bands missing the Saturday afternoon show:
Argyle (TX) Bartlett (TN) Centerville (OH) Friendswood (TX) Homestead (IN) Jenison (MI) Norwin (PA) Stoneman Douglas (FL)
That really doesn't leave more than 1-5 spots, realistically, open for this MASSIVE list of bubble bands, all of which will be showing up with varying chances of advancing.
I have FORTY-FIVE bands currently in the Semis-bubble tier:
Anderson County (KY) - 3 points & 12 spots out of Semis in 2022, 2023 Louisville 12th place Finalist. Low chance as an AA advancer in a perfect world, but not in this saturated field. Archbishop Alter (OH) - Depends on which group of theirs (or which judges) show up. 2022 GN Class A champ, only 1.5 outside of Semis, 2023 totally different story. Likely in as an A rep either way. Ben Davis (IN) - A few points outside of Finals at the 2023 Indy regional and just behind Bixby & Deer Creek, ahead of later GN Semifinalist Lawrence Township. Insanely historic group, but a GN Semifinalist as recently as 2019. Bob Jones (AL) - 2023 Troy Regional 6th place. Long shot but a good group. Bourbon County (KY) - Placed 22nd in 2023 GN Prelims. Cambridge (GA) - 2023 Washington D.C. 8th Place band. Neat shows, seem to have a director intent on breaking them onto the national scene. Distant shot of making some AA noise. If not this year, they are a band to watch. Camdenton (MO) - 2017 & 2019 STL Finalist, less than a point from STL Finals this season, could make some AA noise. 2018 GN Semifinalist on class. Campbell County (KY) - Tied Miamisburg for first band out of 2022 GN Semis (.38 out), 2023 Louisville 5th Place. Cary (NC) - Multiple-time GN Semifinalist prior to Covid, but haven't been the same since. 15th place finisher at Johnson City this past year. Cass (GA) - An interesting addition and almost sure to make noise in AA. 2023 4th place Johnson City, tying with Franklin (TN) and finishing ahead of Kennesaw Mtn, Lake Hamilton, Panther Creek, & Nixa. Catawba Ridge (SC) - 2023 Troy Bronze Medalist, 2023 SCBDA 4A Runner Up, finishing ahead of soon-to-be GN Semifinalist Nation Ford. Distant placement from GN Semis in 2022, looking for revenge. Center Grove (IN) - GN Finalist & Semifinalist for over a thousand years, missed Semis in 2019 to everyone's surprise and haven't made it back in since. Central Crossing (OH) - Former numerous-time GN Semifinalist, 2023 Columbus 11th Place, barely behind Reeths-Puffer. Cheney (WA) - One of the PNW's top dogs, first band from that region of the country to attend since West Salem made the trip (and made Semis!) in 2018. Would love to see it happen again! Clover (SC) - 2023 SCBDA 5A Bronze Medalist, behind Byrnes & Wando. 5th Place 2023 Myrtle Beach. First trip to GN. Sound & Spirit of Columbus (IN) - A long shot for sure, but great directors intent on taking this program places. 47th place 2023 GN Semis, 59th place 2022 GN Semis (but ahead of Green Level & Summit, just behind Bassett & Lake Hamilton). Consistent ISSMA Class A Semi-State finisher, beating out Lawrence Township last year for advancement in the circuit. Deer Creek (OK) - 4 spots & just over a point out of Semis in 2022, 20th Place 2023 Indy Prelims, under 3 points out of Finals. Up & coming OK group. Desoto Central (MS) - Along with Greendale & Lake Hamilton, a ubiquitous, faithful GN attendee, 2017 GN Semifinalist. DeWitt (MI) - Another long shot, directors are working hard to break them onto the national scene. 2023 MCBA Flight 3 champs over Reeths-Puffer. 2022 GN 51st Place, just ahead of North Hardin, Worthington Kilbourne, Greendale, & Lake Hamilton. Dixie Heights (KY) - Long shot, but a band on the upswing - Mid-States 2023 AAAA Runner Up to Kings, who finished 12th at Toledo. So many AA groups attending this year! Floyd Central (IN) - 2021 ISSMA Class A State Finalist, making it in over Goshen, Ben Davis, Lawrence, etc. One of the first few bands out of State in 2022 & 2023. 2023 Louisville 8th Place. Franklin (TN) - Storied program, GN Semi-Finalist with their lovely "Lucy" show in 2021. 2023 Johnson City Bronze Medalist. Goshen (IN) - Multiple-time GN Semifinalist, most recent in 2022. Consistent ISSMA Class A State Finalist. Green Level (NC) - New school, placed quite low on their first GN trip in 2022, but they have Green Hope's former director, who led them to GN Semifinalist status a few times (most notably breaking through the 2016 bloodbath to land in Semis over countless bigger-name groups). 2023 D.C. Bronze Medalist. Greendale (WI) - Consistent GN attendee, landing within the top 40 a few times, but never quite breaking the top 30. By far Wisconsin's best band. Greenfield-Central (IN) - Occasional GN Semifinalsit via class rep (AA), numerous-time ISSMA Class B State Champ, occasionally approaches GN Semis on score. Hardin Valley Academy (TN) - 38th in GN prelims in 2021 just ahead of Morton (who made it in as an AA rep), tied Bassett for 57th in 2022 GN Prelims. 7th Place Chattanooga 2023. Always fun shows. Kickapoo (MO) - Numerous-time STL Finalist, although not so much in recent years. 17th Place 2023 STL, finishing just ahead of Marian Catholic, half a point outside of Finals. Lakota East (OH) - 2022 GN Semifinalist, 2023 STL Finalist. The field is too big to call them a Semis lock, but they're sure to land near the top of this list! Lawrence Township (IN) - New directors post-Covid. Made it back into GN Semis last year with a well-earned bang, making the top 22, but on the other hand failed to advance to ISSMA Semi-State. Still finding their way, but the future could be quite bright. Lincoln-Way (IL) - After 2022 I would have had them in the Semis lock category, but last year was much weaker, missing Indy Finals. Still a great shot at Semis here. Marian Catholic (IL) - Made their way back into Semis on score last year, and rightfully so. They're not going anywhere. Miamisburg (OH) - Numerous-time GN Semifinalist, either on score or as an AA rep. Always seems to be either just in or just out. Milford (OH) - Occasional GN Semifinalist, although it's been a few years. Often finishes in the top 40. Nixa Crimson Corps (MO) - So close to breaking out. A Cartwright group getting closer to STL Finals & GN Semis each year. 2nd band out of STL Finals 2023 (half a point), a respectable 46th place at 2021 GN Semis, directly behind Bourbon County. Noblesville (IN) - Indiana's next big group. Wealthy school district in the same county as Carmel & Fishers. 2023 Indy Finalist & ISSMA Class A State Finalist. I almost want to call them a Semis lock, but they're still young and finding their consistency. Panther Creek (NC) - Numerous-time GN Semifinalist pre-Covid, 5th band out of Semis (a little over a point) on their 2022 GN trip. PCEP (MI) - No explanation needed. Despite only fair mid-season results as of late, they always manage to pull it together for a GN Semis berth. They've just been cutting it too close as of late to call them a lock. Reeths-Puffer (MI) - Not who they once were, but not fading away, either. Finished 42nd on their 2022 GN trip, 3 points out of Semis. Not bad at all. Rockford (MI) - It would be so easy to call them a Semis lock, but consistency has not been their friend year to year, despite excellent musical prowess. If it's a good year, they could challenge for a top 22 spot. South Jones (MS) - Your 2023 Troy Regional Champion! Finished ahead of Kennesaw Mtn & Catawba Ridge. What an intriguing addition! Could easily make AA noise. Summit (TN) - Same school district as Franklin/Brentwood/Ravenwood/Fred J Page, and for those of us from the '00s, Fred J. Page's long time director who led them to a few GN Semis performances opened this school a few years back and still helms the program. No BOA last year, finished 60th and just ahead of Green Level on their 2022 GN trip. Keeping my eye on them as a new big name in TN. Walled Lake Schools (MI) - 2023 GN Semifinalist! Westlake (UT) - Easily Utah's second-best band to American Fork, and hard to see them out of Semis at this point, but the field is so deep! Loved their 2023 show. Worthington Kilbourne (OH) - 2023 Columbus 6th place ahead of Miamisburg and just below Lawrence Township. 55th place 2022 GN Prelims. I always have my eye on their slow but sustained growth upwards!
All of the classes are ridiculously stacked, but I do think A is light this year, and we will absolutely have a rep or two outside of the groups mentioned above. 3 interesting names appear, rounding out my list to 75 groups:
Finneytown (OH) - We all fell in love with them in 2022; a weaker A lineup this year could leave room for this group to grab a class rep spot. Garrard County (KY) - They actually have attended GN before - this group was a monster in the '00s - 2023 KMEA AAA 6th Place at State, behind Murray & Adair. Great small school band. Monrovia (IN) - Consistent ISSMA Class D (smallest class) state finalist, occasional GN Semifinalist on class, as recently as 2018. Norton (OH) - Occasionally making Semis on class rep, this lighter year could be the season that they do it again. Always a large, well-playing small-school band with well-designed shows.

How hard would it be to move finals to Sunday and have 50 in semis? Please and thanks.
But actually...extremely hard, nigh-if-not-completely impossible. Maaaaaaaaybe for #50 which is coming up quickly?

Then we're at the mercy of the Colts schedule.
It would be like scheduling State in Kentucky where it's always, "Who doesn't have a home game that weekend?"

Maybe a Wed-Sat event tho? Might be easier than adding Sunday

Grand Nationals but it’s longer than three days and in the convention center. The band with the least amount of slips on the concrete floor while performing wins.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! The only I thing I might add is that Monrovia is another Class A band with a shot at advancing. They’re a pretty frequent class rep when the KY contingent stays home.

Not only is the deepest pool of talent we’ve had in Class AA, it can be argued that the same can be said for Class AAA as well. Such a solid lineup, and not to mention the most AAA bands we’ve ever had at Grand Nationals, and by a pretty decent margin at that. Someone can go back and count to make sure, but it’s not gonna be me today. 😂
