I really like Westlake (UT) and they have been doing great over the past couple of years. However I was pretty sad when they came to San Antonio I little ways back to see how low they ended up. That alone has me worried to call them a SHOULD for grand nats semis. I will say, they have continued to improve since then and I also think that trip was good for the growth of their program. Edit: I also know that was a tough year for them and it corresponded with a school split. Yes, there was a school split, and they had just gone through a director change. Their now director has worked extremely hard to get in with great show designers and music arrangers. He attends TMEA every year to learn from the best. Just a great director who loves his kids and his kids love him. They are not even the same band that attended San Antonio. He was using that to obtain knowledge about what the best were doing. I had two kids who marched in GN 2016 with their former director and serious issues happened in prelims. If they had marched even as good as they had the week earlier in St George they would have very close to semis. Long story short, but there were preventable issues that made it pretty much a disastrous run. I don't see that happening again.

Westlake was phenomenal at St. George last year. I'd actually have them as a semis lock - as crazy as that sounds in this field.

July 18 attendees update Add Murray, TN Uh, I can't find anything on a Murray High School in Tennessee. Could this perhaps be Murray, KY and it was just put on the list wrong by MFA?

I live only about 15 minutes away from Westlake High School but I don't really follow Utah High School Marching Band as I have no connection to it (I grew up in Texas). Still, it is nice to have local groups succeeding!

Two of my daughters coach color guard at Cedar Valley. It's a small band world around here.

The preseason predictions looked fun, thought I might have a stab at it. Here’s my Top 20 in order, but the different sections mean I can see movement within each bubble.
Top 5 Lock
1. Carmel 2. Avon 3. Tarpon Springs 4. William Mason 5. Broken Arrow
6-12 Bubble
6. Cedar Park 7. Dobyns-Bennett 8. Jenks 9. American Fork 10. Leander 11. Bridgeland 12. Union
13-20 Bubble
13. O’Fallon Township 14. Brownsburg 15. Prosper 16. Fishers 17. Mustang 18. Castle 19. Homestead 20. Lincoln-Way
It hurts to slot the Indiana 3 (plus O’Fallon) as not making finals, but the comp is just that stiff this year. Over the past few years, outside bands have been coming into large BOA events and outplacing the usual favorites; I don’t see any reason why it won’t happen this year. Excited to see how this season shakes out!

A week or so ago I thought there were only 13 world class corps. Had to just sit in my own facepalm. Nothing more humbling than being humbled. That will be the title of my autobiography lol

Obviously the top 5 is pretty locked down, but I can see the 6-20 actually happening. The Texas/Oklahoma bands in the 6-12 bubble are way stronger than people are assuming. Not saying the 13-20 bubble isn’t strong, I just don’t see them having as much motivation to succeed. Just my personal thoughts, but there definitely are reasons for my predicted placements.

July 24 update Add Valley H.S., KY This puts the official list at 111 bands. Doing some internet sleuthing, and it looks like they haven't competed in a hot minute. Doesn't look like they've competed in KMEA in 20+ years. Looking at KYBand, they had 28 members last year and did not compete.

They are listed as hosting MSBA events on both September 7 and October 12 and they are registered for MSBA Class A Championships November 9.

112 bands
How many former semi finalist and finalist? Is historybuff or Balash around to give us those numbers? I just want to keep finding ways to talk about how insanely exciting it is to have this level of competition at Nationals! And I want to be the first to congratulate whatever band makes their first semi-finals ever and finals ever! Whoever that may be.
