When I see the 1980s referenced as the "ancient past" instead of just the past, I will admit, it kind hurts a bit. Ouch. But I guess I can now say that I lived in and vividly remember "ancient times" LOL Haha dang, I even thought about not including that little joke. 😂 I was born in the early 90s and that already feels like ancient history… Yes, I suppose it is all relative. I was born before BOA/MBA even existed. Heck, DCI was only a year old when I was born. The early 90s were my prime marching band days. Good times. Sorry you youngsters missed out.

There is a BOA sponsored clinic at West Salem on this date. The event said “BOA Northwest” From the West Salem band director’s Facebook: Marching Band Peeps: Save the Date! West Salem will be hosting a brand new Bands of America/Music for All affiliate marching band clinic and contest on October 19, 2024 (Salem, OR). The morning and afternoon will consist of clinics with the judges. The evening will consist of a one-round competition, but you can always select comments only. Directors will also have a chance to sign-up for design and rehearsal sessions with judges on Zoom after the event. We are focusing our event on education, growth, and program development. We will be sharing an entry form and our event website very soon. We hope you can join us for this exciting new event. We will be selecting Bands of America judges that will bring their expertise and experience to our event. These clinicians/judges are amazing.

I have been told the two facilities being toured are WSU and the Kibbie Dome, which are just about ten or fifteen minutes from one another. If the regional happens at all, it will be held at one of those locations. I am pulling for Kibbie as it is indoors! Open dates at the Kibbie Dome: 9/21, 9/28, 10/12, 11/2, 11/9. Washington State's schedule is still TBD, as they're part of the Pac-2, and their calendar is still being finalized. Open dates at Washington State: 9/14, 9/28, 10/5, 10/12, 10/26, 11/2.

Is Grants Pass still the best band in the PNW? I haven't been keeping track of who has been winning things up there I would say it’s between them and West Salem. Ridgeline, Kamiak and Cheney are probably the top dogs in Washington state, but the top Oregon groups are better.

Given the last two years of competition is it still fair to say that West Salem is better than Ridgeline? Both bands basically started/restarted their program two/three years ago and Ridgeline has consistently beat them over that span. IMO comparing Grants Pass and Ridgeline is more fair considering the margin between the two bands at the NWAPA Championships this past year was 0.1 points between first and second place, while both bands are a FULL 4 points ahead of West Salem.

If we are considering how BOA adjudicates and what they reward — which was my intent — Ridgeline would not be as successful as any of the aforementioned groups. Ridgeline is an amazing band, but their current design style could not be further from the style BOA is known for. It makes them very successful in NWAPA and plays well to their sheets, but I’m curious to see how their design style changes, if at all, if they indeed attend this BOA regional. Ridgeline is like the Grove City, OH of Washington. At a BOA show, their performance ordinals would be high, but effect ordinals would be low. That said, I didn’t know West Salem was still recovering that much after COVID. Hoping they bounce back to their former glory soon!

WSU just announced the Washington “State Marching Band Championships” (they’re not) on October 26th, and are incidentally moving towards using BOA sheets.
This all but confirms the Kibbie Dome as the venue for the BOA regional, presumably on the proposed October 12th date. Stay tuned for an announcement, probably within the next couple of weeks!

Since y'all were talking about potential dates, for A.C. Davis' possible last comp of their season they have the Kibbie Dome listed on November 2nd. So 11/02?

That’s been there for a couple months now. I can say with 95% certainty that it will be 10/12 (though I’m lowkey hoping for 11/02). They just need to effing announce it! Now that the Music for All National Festival is over it may be pretty soon now. Probably wanted to wait for that and all the spring breaks to conclude.

American Fork has also apparently expressed interest in attending this regional, and BOA seems to be pushing for them to attend. Which… honestly, I hope they don’t. It’s going to be one world class AAAA band against everyone else, which are mostly A and AA schools that would simply be demolished. Thankfully, I can confirm American Fork has no interest in paying to go to 3 BOA events this year and will not be attending

I’d post the screenshot if I knew how, but band directors were notified today. It is official.
October 12th. Moscow, ID. Kibbie Dome.
Addendum: It is also now included in the BOA regional lineup on the MFA website.

Mead is hosting the Spokane area show on this day, but I also know the director really wants to attend the BOA show. They would need to reschedule their show though and that might not be a good idea in April.
Incidentally, Mt. Spokane is likely to opt for this show over the Spokane area show.

Drop (for now unless they reschedule?):
Grants Pass H.S., OR (going to PNWMBC I think? Calendar just saws "MB Competition PNW") Mt. Spokane H.S., WA (going to PNWMBC) Mead H.S., WA (hosting PNWMBC)
Sumner H.S., WA (going to Sunset H.S., OR Competition)
Meridian H.S., ID (going to Eagle H.S., ID competition)

I would maybe give it some time for bands to catch up to the circulation of the newly announced show details. I will probably only be considering “Confirmed” bands for the next couple of weeks to allow any bands with their schedules “finalized” to reschedule.
