So disappointed in Class A judging. All 10 bands were phenomenal and brought their best tonight but as soon as they said Carrol was 10th....I knew the judges were about to have some wacky results.

Agreed. Other than the top three, it's like they just pulled numbers out of a hat. And the scoresheet shows that they were all over the place too.

You are totally right about pulling out of a hat. Seems like ISSMA judging gets more inconsistent each year. Bring on BOA this week! And truly....congrats to ALL the bands regardless of results! Lots of blood, sweat and tears out on that field!

If you want the highlights:
1. Penn was 9th because of the music caption- it was close to the top 5. Clearly where people expected them to in GE and Visual, however. 2. Fishers was high in Music Ind., but was nearly scraping the bottom in Music Ens.- dragged their music score all the way down there. 3. Across the board, it seems judges used Fishers as the measuring stick of Class A. They were really impressed with the bands afterwards. (Hard not to when it's Homestead and Avon..) 4. Lawrence Township was (mostly) consistent in placement in Music and GE. Nearly scraping the bottom in Visual. 5. CG was scraping the bottom in Music. Fairly high in Visual. Right around their placement in GE. 6. Weirdest split of the evening: Brownsburg leading outside the top 3 in Music GE, but nearly scraping the bottom in Visual GE. From what I've seen 2 weeks ago, it was opposite. 7. Homestead was up there with their placement across the board, except for Music Ind. ...... which is not saying that much because #1 wasn't too far ahead. Homestead is holding steady 8. Castle held ridiculously steady this competition. Solidly 4th. 9. Carmel isn't too far off of Avon.
Also, I'm fully convinced judges had amnesia and were just arbitrarily assigning numbers based on the band before. The numbers kind of make sense with that viewpoint.
EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention that the Music Ind. judge had Lawrence Township REALLY high in the performance portion of Music Ind.

After the announcement of Carroll in 10th, we were all prepared for an interesting turn of events in terms of placement. What a wild ride that was!
A thought going into Grand Nats this weekend . Less than two points separating Avon, Carmel, and Homestead. I know 2 points is a mile wide, but captions were all over the place. Having Homestead and Avon back to back make those scores excellent comparisons. Both bands had incredible runs. I can hardly wait how this all plays out with the other big dogs next week!

Congrats to Brownsburg - the kids are over the moon at placing 5th. It is a very hard, dense show, and these kids have attacked it.

I was at Lucas oil last night... What is everyone’s thoughts on people talking, laughing, and commenting while a band is performing. I have asked people to quiet down but it seems to make them louder. The group behind us were obviously band experts🙄. I gave them a couple of stares and it didn’t help. They only got louder.
Maybe the PA announcer could have that little reminder before each class starts? Silence cell phones and shut your mouth while a band is performing😂.

Wow, interesting results. I would not have placed Carroll in 10th, yikes. I have loved Avon's show, though, and I had them pegged for the top spot. It'll be interesting to see how Avon/Carmel plays out at Grand Nats though, with their scores being that close. Looking forward to seeing some of these shows again next week!

One thing about Indiana State Finals is that the other classes stay to watch class A often. Lots of young people in the audience! Even though they are also band kids, they are tired and forget that others are getting their turn on the field. They are young and ignorant most times. I only say that because I was up on the left 30, and we had quite a few band kids near us. They were chatty and annoying, but I guess I just have patience for that because I’m a teacher. Now if you’re talking adults, they should know better 😜

At football games it's annoying enough, but in that setting, I give a bit of a pass because most of the crowd there doesn't know the unspoken "rules" during a marching band performance. It should be a given at a competition, though.

I had two people walk right in front of my seat during the middle of my band's performance last night. Why they couldn't wait until between performances, I don't know.

I remember in the past they would block people from entering the stadium during awards of the class previous! This year it seems like they let people come and go as they pleased. Didn’t enforce anything regarding cell phones and taking pictures during performances. I felt like ISSMA dropped the ball on that compared to where they have been in the past.

I am sorry if people were blocking your view or moving around, but I can personally attest to the vigilance of the LOS staff that prevented people from entering the stadium. No one was getting past that guy, not even to go to the bathroom between D and A. I waited patiently with thousands of others until they allowed all D guests to exit before allowing A guests in. LOS is not at fault in this case. I have found from working at our invitationals that many guests do not understand the etiquette of band. Some are first time attendees and have no idea how it all works. They are there to support their student and that is the only one who matters. However wrong that may seem to everyone around them, that one kid may not have ever had a parent or grandparent attend their program before. It takes some time to learn. Some people are just naturally rude, and stand at the gate and argue with the attendant that they must get past him. There is no help for that, but they didn’t get past.

I looked at the scores and wondered 2 things. One can Avon or Carmel win the last GN Final of the Decade. And if they can get 3 more points , could GC end there marvelous year with maybe a GN finals? After seeing the scores I think it's possible.

After seeing the scores I think it's possible. I don’t think GC can make finals, but with a good run they can make semi-finals on score instead of just class rep from their panel.

Where I was sitting by this lady who could not shut up. I eventually asked her Would you mind? And she went out on me like I'm the horrible person. And I said do you see the rest of us yapping while these kids are showing there hard work. And she left. Every other competiton Issma wise I have been to this season, they have blocked off the entrances during awards. .

Some nice vids up. Homestead has improved a lot. Looking forward to this week!!! Agree. A lot of talk about Fishers catching Homestead. But, looks like Homestead is somewhat catching up to Avon and Carmel. They have such a great show this year. Castle proved they are an incredible band. Congrats on a great season castle. You rocked. Brownsburg was so crisp. Glad the judges rewarded that. Their movements were so clean. Congrats to all.

It was the same way at BOA San Antonio last weekend. Very lax on making people sit down and not crowd the entry points once a band had begun playing. People standing everywhere!

I had two people walk right in front of my seat during the middle of my band's performance last night. Why they couldn't wait until between performances, I don't know. Some observations, having spent 9 years now in the stands. First, I didn't attend State Finals this season, for the first time since 2011. I hate the experience with the crowds and the seating. It's a nightmare. Part of the problem with State Finals is that it attracts the peripheral fans. Grandma Betty and Uncle Mark...the ones that won't sit in the bleachers for a random contest at Center Grove, but will troop out to Lucas Oil to see little Kimmy in State Finals. There are simply a lot of people going to State Finals who don't really know marching Band etiquette. I've had members of my own extended family attend back when I still had kids marching, and I constantly had to remind them to quit talking. Everyone here knows better. Grandma Betty and Uncle Mark do not. They're just there to see Kimmy play her flute. BOA events, particularly GN's tend to be better. It's expensive to attend, and people tend to be coming from longer distances. Not so many casual fans there.
