So Long, Cadets. We will never forget your contributions to DCI. “With extreme sadness, today we announce that Cadets Arts & Entertainment has filed for bankruptcy, bringing our corps' competitive future to an end. We know this comes as a shock to many, and our Board deeply empathizes with all of the alumni, staff, donors, parents, and volunteers whose hearts are broken by this news.” You can read the full announcement here: cadets.org/cadets-arts-entertainment-cae-files-bankruptcy

Here’s the highlights of the article:
"This action was unfortunately taken as a result of, among other factors, a sexual abuse lawsuit that was filed in September 2020, six months after CAE was formed. The lawsuit names, among other defendants, CAE and alleges that an incident occurred on December 31, 1982, at an unofficial event of the Garfield Cadets. CAE is compassionate to anyone who has experienced assault of any form. In response to motions to dismiss, the court found that plaintiff-stated causes of action require CAE and all successor organizations to defend this suit. Unfortunately, the necessity of chapter 7 bankruptcy means that The Cadets will never return to the marching arts competition field again or risk arriving back where CAE is today. The Cadets' memory will live on in our hearts and in our minds."

Can't say I'm surprised. Still immensely sad.

Certainly a lot of fond memories of amazing shows and certainly a few funny rule proposals for sure.

There's really no need to do that now. Sad. The former members bringing down the organization. Hope they're thrilled for themselves. This is, unsurprisingly, a gross take.

How about placing the blame on George Hopkins and those who turned a blind eye where it belongs instead of the victims. On one hand the guy returned the Cadets to Glory in the 1980s and beyond. On the other hand he used the organization so he could prey upon young women.

DCI will feel quite odd without The Cadets...

On the other hand, he used the organization so he could prey upon young women. Yep. I'm reminded of Harvey Weinstein, who produced and distributed some of my favorite movies. But now Weinstein is serving the first of two long prison sentences. The Cadets were tremendous (if sometimes annoying in their last 15 years or so). And Cadets 2 was an excellent but short-lived addition to DCA. And yet, although we in the audience (and most of the participants) didn't know it, for more than four decades, there was a secret rot at the heart of it all.

On the other hand he used the organization so he could prey upon young women. Yep. I understand why the organization can't pay out the victims and continue to be viable - thus chapter 7. The lesson here: Not everything can be fixed! And most of the blame revolves around one man, oh the irony!

Certainly a lot of fond memories of amazing shows and certainly a few funny rule proposals for sure. Some of them were actually okay. I really like the ordinal system - which he proposed a few times. I also like rotating GE judges and spreading them out a bit more throughout the season, especially as it relates to DCI championships. I don't believe in slotting per se, but fresh perspectives are good.

I wish I could take credit for saying this, but I cannot. Took this from a Facebook comment. But it articulates my feelings (and many others’) better than I could ever do myself.
“What's with the obsession in circumventing a system of punishment that provides, finally, some sort of justice for victims of sexual assault that adults ignored and ran away from for 4 decades while committing and allowing even more of them to occur in that timeframe?
Are flags and bugles really more important than what proctors of the drum corps did and perpetuated?
Seems like so much energy is pointed in the wrong direction in this situation.
I feel sadness for the innocent people affiliated with the drum corps that lost their organization. But I feel DEVASTATED for the innocent people who were assaulted, drugged, and harassed that are somehow villains now because they sought justice. While I can feel and sympathize for both, one is clearly FAR worse than the other.“

It's about the wrong people being punished. But it's done, and it certainly should stand as a stark warning to everyone else in drum corps to take safety seriously.

I just wanted to emphasize that the emotions that many people feel about this situation isn't directed at the victims.

FTR - the user who was blaming victims has been banned from the site (this was the final straw in a series of terms of use violations).
