I'm happy to talk about most bands but I only really know a lot about AF and Westlake (UT), so I want to help others that want to know more out by answering questions they may have about either of those 2 programs. If you feel like lending your services to increasing the general knowledge about bands you know a lot about, make a post about being able to help with said bands, and if you have questions, reply to whoever said they can help with the band(s) you're interested in.

Cool idea! Throw any Qs about Brownsburg my way (no show theme leaks - don't ask!!) What kind of shows do they march? Like, what makes them unique? I’d say usually the music leans toward symphonic and show themes more dark or serious thematically. As is often the case with Wes-designed shows, lots of large props that are moved across the field throughout. All props are built by parents, and can sometimes be pretty elaborate and crazy to build. I suppose we’re known for that - tons of large, elaborate props.

How come Illinois most successful groups don't come the wealthy suburbs of Chicago were always hearing about (idk such as Naperville). Naperville North was relatively successful for about 15ish years. They had cheesy shows that oozed GE year in and year out. A 7 time regional finalist (as recently as 2016), and a 14 time ISU finalist formerly under the direction of Dan Moore, who designed their shows. They're now mostly non-competitive, save for the Naperville Central show each year. Used to march 100+; now they're down in Class A at Chicago area shows, which are mostly done by band size. Naperville Central is a decent band. A 4 time ISU finalist, they've done BOA events in the past (as recently as 2019), but I don't expect them to go any time soon. Design is pretty good usually; it's performance captions that hold them back. Neuqua (Nee-quah) Valley gets out a couple of times a year, usually once locally and U of I to close out the year. They haven't ever really taken competitive marching band seriously.

You can ask me anything about Michigan. If I can’t answer it, I’m sure boahistorybuff can.

What ever happened to Mona Shore, MI I usually don't seem when I'm looking up scores? I only know them since I found records of them going to USSBA Championships in 2006 and won Group V-A.

What ever happened to Mona Shore, MI I usually don't seem when I'm looking up scores? I only know them since I found records of them going to USSBA Championships in 2006 and won Group V-A. During the late 1980s, Mona Shores HS, from Muskegon/Norton Shores MI, began to compete in circuits on the west side of Michigan. Their director, Jack Addams, wanted a strong competitive marching band and worked to improve the program in the early 1990s. The band entered both the MCBA and BOA competitive circuits at this time. They even hired well renown Gary Czapinski as their visual designer. Between 1993 and 2003, they won several MCBA state Championships in their Flight. They were very successful at BOA as well. This included several regional finals appearances and multiple top 20 placements at Grand Nationals. In 1995, when 14 bands were selected for Grand National Finals, Mona Shores was 15th. There were many who thought they were robbed of a spot. In 1999, Mona Shores was third in Class AA at Grand Nationals. I think they were both surprised and upset that Reeths-Puffer, who they had beaten by a couple points at the state championships won the Class AA title and landed in GN Finals. Mona Shores seemed less enthusiastic about BOA after that. I believe it was just after their last state title in 2003 (someone can correct me if I am wrong) that Jack Addams retired. The program took a hit after that. In the mid 2000s (somewhere around 2007), new directors opted to cease having a competitive marching band. Their reason was due to the expense involved in having an MCBA and BOA level competitive program. They stated that they wanted to invest more time and money into the entire performing arts program (ie concert band, orchestra, choir). My impression was that funding to have both a good competitive program and a well rounded music education program at all levels in the district was not there anymore. I certainly understand and respect the reasoning. I will say however, I do miss the Mona Shores marching band very much. Many of their performance videos from their 1990s glory years are on line if you want to check them out.

I really hate seeing programs go like McGavock and John Overton. I'll be watching some of their old video I didn't know they were a prominent Michigan band.

You can look through the Michigan State Championships thread in the history section to see their placements in MCBA and the Hornrank Results page to see their success in BOA. 1992, 1993, 1995 and 1999 Grand Nationals were among their best performances.
