Except for the entrance at the top, a bit of the ballad, and the last minute, the left side of the field (from the goal line to about the 30 yard line)are unused for most of this show. I wonder why.

The Blue Devils probably put out an explanatory video about this already, but I just realized tonight that the ending of the show is meant to recreate the famous German Romantic painting Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (1818) by Caspar David Friedrich.  I have frequently encountered complaints that the Blue Devils just keep doing the same show over and over. I'm generally perplexed by such claims, but this will be at least the third time they recreated a famous painting, following Edward Hopper's Nighthawks (1942) in 2018 and Henri Matisse's The Snail (1953) last year. |

I have frequently encountered complaints that the Blue Devils just keep doing the same show over and over. I'm generally perplexed by such claims, but this will be at least the third time they recreated a famous painting, following Edward Hopper's Nighthawks (1942) in 2018 and Henri Matisse's The Snail (1953) last year. Thatās super cool. I saw BD in Fort Collins and was blown away on Saturday. But there are some issues with the show, drill sort of clumped, props donāt get much use. The ballad was beautiful live almost teared up. However, Scott chandler can explain it on YouTube in long format - but I need it explained in 10 minutes on a football field. From that lens Coats and Boston are winning. I donāt know what on earth Crown is doing - they need to fire that design staff and start again. |

As for BD, I'm still curious about the large mostly unused space on the left side of the field in this year's show.

Clarifying one point: I should have said "famous works of art" not "famous paintings," because The Snail is actually a collage of paper cut-outs. And that matters, because BD's 2023 show was called "The Cut-Outs" for that reason: Matisse, a legendary painter, was bedridden for a long spell, couldn't paint, and started making art using this new method. |
