Brad Bell sounds hoarse tonight.
FloMarching keeps putting pop-up ads in their videos, sometimes even during performances. That has to stop.
The music in "Call of the Cosmos," the show from SoundSport performer, Eclipse, includes selections from Holst's "The Planets" but mostly consists something else that I couldn't name but was very familiar to me. I looked it up on DCX: "Enter the Galaxies" by Paul Lovatt-Cooper. No other corps has played that tune before. How did I know it? I might have heard a brass band playing it on Youtube. And then I thought to search this forum for "galaxies" and found my answer: it was in Hebron's show last year.
I trust Cincinnati Tradition's actual uniforms consist of more than shorts, t-shirts, and a draping of cloth. Is this the full corps or do they have some holes tonight? I count 68 members (33 brass, 12 battery (5/2/5), 6 pit 15 guard, and 3 drum majors); not sure where the cut off is between the All Age divisions. Naturally I'm tickled to see any group play "In the Stone." Somebody let Mr. Mozart out of that closet, please.

I understand the desire to have generators for your on field setup, but if you are going to use them it shouldn’t sound like a 15 year old boat motor and smell like an 93 Voyager minivan without an exhaust.
(Cough, Crown, cough)

Cincinnati Tradition 74.95 The full recap can be found here: (Recap not available yet) These results are really...interesting. I was on the 50 about halfway up and disagree with every placement except CT.

Cincinnati Tradition 74.95 And in SoundSport, where an actual score was announced at last week's first show, this time it was only announced that Eclipse received a silver medal. (Which is how it normally works in SoundSport.) Meanwhile, DCI hasn't figured out All Age scoring yet. CT's score here would put them in second place in the standings, ahead of every corps except the Buccaneers. Even without having seen any All Age show this year besides CT, I can tell you that's just not possible. In World Class, Bloo didn't seem as tight tonight as in their premiere. Also their electronics sounded heavier. But the top three corps within a point! I'd love to see a Finals like 1980 with the top four that close. I've probably mentioned it before, but the results that year were: 1. Blue Devils 90.60 2. 27th Lancers 90.25 3. Bridgemen 90.05 4. Spirit of Atlanta 89.80 (With Phantom Regiment in fifth place, which seems very possible this year.)

Here are the shows to look forward to this week! ... Friday July 5th:- MidCal Champions Showcase, Clovis, CA, Begins at 6:55 PM PDT FYI regarding this one, because the daytime temperatures in Clovis are going to reach 110 F on Friday, "the SoundSport® and Open Class corps performances will not take place at this event," which will start at 8:35 p.m. Real talk, though. Where has this Phantom been the last 15 years? I would say 11 years. Although I found "Turandot" in 2012 to be somewhat lifeless, it did take the bronze medal, after all. But after that, they declined pretty continuously until the pandemic. That said, some people are complaining that this year's show is "park and bark," and after actually watching a high cam video, I think they're right. "Mynd" is an 11-minute show with just 2 minutes, 24 seconds of the brass moving while playing -- of which 28 seconds is only the tubas on a fairly simple bass line under the duet. Compare to "Juliet" in 2011, which was also 11 minutes long, but which had 4 minutes, 22 seconds of the brass moving while playing. That show placed fifth. This show might do the same. Make of that what you will. I do think the "barking," if you will, is pretty good stuff.

I see the only corps to beat Blue Devils that season was 27h Lancers, twice at Allentown a week earlier (DCI East was still a Prelims/Finals event). Two days before that Phantom Regiment had defeated 27th Lancers in Bayonne. And Madison Scouts had outscored 27th Regiment, Spirit of Atlanta, and Phantom Regiment at various points in the season. Also interesting to see other "cadet" corps that use to exist, like the Phantom Regiment Cadets and Madison Junior Scouts, scoring 25.35 and 22.75, respectively, at DCI Whitewater in mid-July. A few places ahead of them were the Kiltie Kadets.

Of course this was pre-internet, so "a lot of people" meant people that you interacted with at shows, or that weekly DCI newsletter (Drum Corp World) that used to come out. But as the season progressed they slipped back behind the top groups. They were definitely the crowd favorite though. My buddy and I went to several shows (at least 8) that year travelling around in his mom's 1975 Honda Civic. The one that looked like a shoe. We were at DCI North, DCI Midwest, DCI East, DCI Finals, along with a few other shows in the area. I recall milling around with The Bridgemen near their busses in Allentown. I'm not joking when I say that those dudes were rough looking, as if they'd have been more at home in a biker bar than a marching arts competition. Different times.

These results are really...interesting. I was on the 50 about halfway up and disagree with every placement except CT. Go on... I was at the Mason event, my first DCI show. It seems I don’t understand DCI scoring any better than BOA. I thought Phantom was by far the best show. The sound, the concept, the execution, it was aces. I didn’t think anyone else came close. If I could only ever see one of those bands again, it would be them, without any hesitation.

World ClassAll-Age Class1. Cincinnati Tradition 74.95 Meanwhile, DCI hasn't figured out All Age scoring yet. CT's score here would put them in second place in the standings, ahead of every corps except the Buccaneers. Even without having seen any All Age show this year besides CT, I can tell you that's just not possible. And this sort of error arguably could matter, because according to FromThePressbox (presumably citing a statement from DCI): "Order of appearance at the DCI All Age Championships will be based on the reverse order of each corps' highest score of the season, before being divided by competitive classification." All Age corps, being mostly weekends only, don't compete in that many events, which makes it likelier that a scoring error could unfairly advantage one corps over the other come Finals. That said, the fact that there only four or five corps per competitive classification should mitigate the usual problems that performance order can cause with judging. If a corps gets a high score they don't deserve, at most they'll be three or four positions out of order, not to much for the judges to mentally work around.

Happy Independence Day! A friend sent me this to me earlier today: As far as I know, that's not from Hamilton (which I've only seen once), but I wonder which came first: this joke or Lin-Manuel Miranda's famous musical? Speaking of which, I'd like to note that, while it's not listed in their repertoire at DCX, the Reading Buccaneers definitely included "Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)" from Hamilton in their 2015 show. Meanwhile I've been watching the second half of Macy's 4th of July Fireworks on NBC, which I have to crank up pretty loud because, despite the rain here in Cleveland tonight, my neighbors are, as usual, turning the street into a aural war zone with all the fireworks they're shooting off. (In 2020, someone on the web shared a photo taken from a plane descending to Cleveland's airport at about this time, and it was explosions and smoke as far as the eye could see.) The All-American musical selections are covers, and like (too) many a drum corps and marching band show, they are jumping from one song to the next or mashed together. The only song played in full was "The Star-spangled Banner" to open. After that, there has been, among much else, "Brave" (the Sara Bareilles tune), "Lovely Day" (Bill Withers), a mashup of "Sir Duke" (Stevie Wonder) and "Uptown Funk" (Bruno Mars), a mashup of "Amazing Grace" and Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide," and Phillip Phillips's "Home." (Yes, contradicting my usual stance, I'm listing performers rather than composers here.) I'm quite fond of most of the songs, but it's interesting to reflect on how times change and what is thought of as typically American music. My understanding is that many drum corps prefer not to compete on the Fourth of July because it is more financial remunerative to collect appearance fees for marching in local parades. But there certainly have been competitions on this day in past year. Although I've never attended a drum corps show on Independence Day, on July 4, 2015, a friend and I were driving back to Cleveland after a week hiking in Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland. (I highly recommend visiting that park. It's a really cool place.) Our first day got us most of the way across Nova Scotia. We spent our second night in a Boston suburb, where we found a local festival and a fine fireworks display. Had we arrived a couple hours earlier, we could have attended The Beanpot Invitational in Lynn -- an event that often happens on or just before the 4th, and which was run that year as a joint DCI-DCA event, with these results: DCI1. 82.30 -- Cadets, "The Power of 10" 2. 81.10 -- Carolina Crown, "Inferno" 3. 73.40 -- Crossmen, "Above and Beyond" 4. 71.60 -- Troopers, "Wild Horses" 5. 61.40 -- Jersey Surf, "Sun Surfing" DCA1. 81.30 -- Hawthorne Caballeros, "Unchained" 2. 78.20 -- Cadets 2, "The Red Square" 3. 71.75 -- Connecticut Hurricanes, "After Hours" By the end of DCI's season, Crown would be in second and Cadets in fourth. But on the DCA side, Cadets 2 would finish second and Caballeros would be fourth.
