The Freelancers Alumni corps' screaming trumpet soloist on "Bridge Over Troubled Water" has learned his part since last week, when he had a chart in hand. But a few other members are still working on that. These are some really cool and unique brass arrangements -- much more complex than anything the Open Class corps are doing -- that I'm not sure they will be able to lock in sufficiently to win the mini corps competition this year. Interesting to learn that they're playing G bugles. I don't think I knew that. (But that fact when announced made no discernible effect on the crowd.) Brandt Crocker noted that the ensemble includes alumni not only of the Freelancers but also of Blue Devils, Santa Clara Vanguard, Anaheim Kingsmen (the first corps to win DCI's championship), Diplomats, and Impulse. I don't know which of several corps called the Diplomats that means. Last year, I learned that at least one member had been in the Renegades (because he commented on the Renegades t-shirt I was wearing as we waited in the food line).
The Spirit of Sunnyvale, an all-age SoundSport ensemble from the San Jose suburb of that name, played "In the Stone," "September," and "After the Love Has Gone" in their show titled "Do You Remember: The Music of Earth, Wind, and Fire". They have 12 in the battery (3/3/4/2) plus one member of a trap set -- all playing standstill in an arc on the front hash. They have 12 winds (brass and woodwinds) who march a little. They have 3 on guard. And they have 2 drum majors, one of whom started conducting usig a comb and one who doubled as a vocalist on all three songs. As you know, I am an advocate for live performance over recorded stuff on all parts, including voice. But I am also highly skeptical of the use of voice by corps and bands. If you're going to use it, it has to be really good. This didn't clear that bar.
If I counted correctly, Golden Empire has 38 on guard, 40 on brass, 25 in the battery (9/5/5/6), 16 in the pit, and 3 drum majors. That's a total of 122 members. They had one prop on the field: a white door with red panels on either side. Their show was titled "Crossing the Threshold" and their repertoire was listed as Symphony No. 9, "From the New World," by Antonin Dvorak, and Symphony No. 7 by Anton Bruckner. If you're going to use an unmiked soloist (something I generally like to hear), that person really needs to sing out. The corps hasn't learned the drill for the last minute of their show, which they performed as a standstill and sounded better for it. Their show was about eight minutes long.
I think I asked this last week: why does Vessel have 18 snare drums? (They also have six tenors, six basses, and five cymbals.)
Dear Impulse: Frank Sinatra is not the composer of "New York, New York" (although at the time I first played that song as as the opener of our football halftime show -- followed by "On Broadway" and Neil Diamond's "America" -- when I was a freshman in high school, I also didn't know that). Impulse uses an electric cello and electric violin. And an interesting synth sound.
Brandt Crocker announced Gold as Blue Devils B, although he caught and corrected his mistake almost immediately. I mentioned last week that Gold is playing a selection from Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, but it wasn't listed in their repertoire. Now it is, along with Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5, "Rebirth" by Scott Director, and "The Prayer" by David Foster. Not listed today: "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," even though they open with a sample of Lorde's cover of that song (and then take it up in the brass). There appears to be a plot, including a funeral, but I wasn't able to follow it.
Blue Devils B, who provided a brass ensemble to play the national anthem at the top of this evening's event, have a bunch of pillars in the upper left and lower right corners on the field, connected by an arc of smaller pillars that end up having numbers on top of them. It's hard to see anyone beating them for the Open Class championship this year.
One headline, why believe it, Blue Devils C? Here's a headline: most of the members of this corps probably weren't born when Blue Devils played Burt Bacharach's "A House Is Not a Home" in 2011. The end of their show sems to be inspired by Hawthorne Caballeros' 2019 production, "Out of the Box."

Either someone in DCI headquarters got the memo that people want a bit more competition in the season or the algorithm got juiced in Whitewater. Add in 2 nights of BAC and Crown not being scored and the rankings will look crazy.

The La Crosse show was delayed for lightning just after Minnesota Brass performed, but the Blue Stars, who are hosting, just announced that it will resume shortly.

Comments based on watching the Flo stream:
Tonight's first SoundSport ensemble at the LaCrosse show, the Sound of Sun Prairie, is a marching band rather than a drum corps (I consider the latter to be a subset of the former) with 35 brass and woodwinds, 5 in the battery (3/0/2), 3 in the pit, 6 in the guard, and 1 drum major (that's 50 total). Tonight's performance of their show "Neurolink" would score in the low 50s in BOA (and about 70 in OMEA), in my opinion, and if performed perfectly could go up about ten points from there.
Minnesota Brass with 18 brass, 12 battery (5/2/5), 13 pit, 11 guard, and 1 drum major (that's 55 total). Their show, "Midwest Side Story," apparently is meant to take a page from Wiliam Mason's 2015 show by presenting a Romeo and Juliet story using music not from West Side Story. (To be sure, Mason played "Somewhwere" as well as the theme from the 1960s movie version of Romeo and Juliet.) This is a much more ambitious production than Sun Prairie's, as you would expect from an organization with hopes to move back to a full field corps (they were so good!), but it was both incomplete and still pretty rough. And nothing apart from the show's title was actually presenting the story. One of their brass players did switch to sax for a solo on "Harlem Nocturne," a song which was not in their announced repertoire.
There was a lengthy delay for lightning after that.
It turns out that "Mine!", which is the title of River City Rhythm's show, is not a reference to Finding Nemo. Although if the show is not complete and takes a Treasure of the Sierra Madre turn, then presumably it has a double meaning. The corps kept to a relatively small portion of the field. They have 37 brass, 22 battery (9/4/6/3), 17 pit, 9 guard, and 3 drum majors, for a total of 88 members.
Madison Scouts' hand props in the ballad remind me a little of the Avon H.S. props last year. Not nearly as effective, to be sure. At the end of the season, I'd like to compare their version of "Unholy" with Hawthorne Caballeros' take from last year.* Tonight's show felt short. Is there more to come? *(Edit: I misremembered. Cabs played "Take Me to Church" not "Unholy" in 2023.)
Toward the end of the early percussion break in Phantom Regiment's show, horn players manipulating the cage props picked up their instruments, moved just a couple steps, put their instruments down again, and then participated in a trust fall. Seems like an inefficient bit of movement. But man, that show is clean an hot! Despite the limited time spent moving while playing (since the guard spins cube props at one point, perhaps the right show to compare it to is Carolina Crown 2012), I like it so much more than last year's show. (There was some sort of electronics issue for the first 20 seconds.) But it feels nearly done: they need to add more difficulty to it if they want to stay ahead of Mandarins and Santa Clara Vanguard.
Colts have a solid show. It would take a lot to bump them out of Finals.
Took a long time for Bluecoats to come out. I wonder why. The overall level of the show seems up since Friday, but there were some uncharacteristic errors, including a false start by someone in the opening hits, feet very clearly out of place, and a dropped silver flag in the feature. They've added a couple extra notes in the ending. They need to work on making the piece audience friendly: although Bluecoats' show seems obviously superior to me, I can see why people might prefer Phantom's.
Only just now realizing that Blue Stars' different sections are wearing different colors at the top of the show. I don't think they do enough with their props, particularly the telescopes.
Finally, the Blue Stars 60th Anniversary Alumni Corps played. They have 97 brass, 10 pit, 21 guard, 3 drum majors.
For the most part, they played in standstill arcs or blocks. The exception was their tribute to the 1993 corps, which placed first in Division III, with just 13 horns. To commemorate that, they had just 13 horns (plus percussion) play the Overture to Candide while playing. They opened with a selection from Holst's Suite in Eb, followed it with two tunes I should recognize but don't (the first one was a Latin number: "Tiger of San Pedro," perhaps). Following the 1993 tribute they played and sang Phillip Phillips' "Home." Then they were joined by the current corps to play "La Vie en Rose" (from my favorite Blue Stars show: "La Tour" in 2008), something catchy that sounds like it would have played in a 1970s show (my guess based on their 1970s repertoire: "Rampart Street Parade"), and finally "We've Only Just Begun."
Because of the weather delay, scores were not announced at the show.

is a marching band rather than a drum corps (I consider the latter to be a subset of the former) So you would be in the camp that accepts the self-proclaimed TBDBITL at tOSU as a "band" because their drum corps instrumentation qualifies because it's a subset of the broader term.

Do you mean as a "corps"? (The) Ohio State University Marching Band is definitely a band. By DCI's recent standards,* they're also a corps, but they choose not to refer to themselves that way. *That would be (1) the change allowing any-key valved bell-front instruments in 2000, (2) the change allowing trombones and French horns in 2014, and (3) the change allowing any brass instruments in ... was it 2018? The year that SCV had the sousaphone player in the cage. (Also when did DCI allow three valves rather than two? I remember when the Bluecoats came recruiting at my school in the late 1980s, the requirement was still for two valves. But it changed sometime in the early 1990s, I think.)

I personally am in the camp who rolls his eyes so hard you can hear it every time he sees a reference to “TBDBITL”. The band's announcer actually refers to them sometimes as "tuh-bit-il," which annoys me because I think it should be "tuh-bid-uh-bit-il."
