I'm not sure, but I knew VR was cutting it close and the enrollment checker (https://rptsvr1.tea.texas.gov/adhocrpt/adste.html very handy tool) confirms my suspicions. It was the same website I used last year when speculating Rouse's drop to AA (remember that from txbands?). Leander is still looking to be comfortably within AAA and speaking of Rouse, it's looking like they'll be back in AAA this year. *+*+*+*+* Thanks, friend! I wasn’t sure where to find that info. Of course another High School is being built within a few years, so Rouse will probably go back down again for awhile. Crazy growth out here! The last projection I saw had HS#7 opening in 2024, so we have a while for all schools to grow until that happens.

Finalist tiers (in ABC order) and class placement predictions. Forgive me if any classifications are incorrect:
Vista Ridge H.S., TX ————— Clovis H.S., NM Timber Creek H.S., TX ————— James Martin H.S., TX Mansfield H.S., TX Wylie East H.S., TX ————— Del Rio H.S., TX Granbury H.S., TX Midland Lee H.S., TX Permian H.S., TX Summit H.S., TX ————— Coronado H.S., TX Lubbock-Cooper H.S., TX
A: 1) Pecos H.S., TX 2) Estacado Early College H.S., TX
AA: 1) Plainview H.S., TX
AAA: 1) Clovis H.S., NM 2) Wylie East H.S., TX 3) Granbury H.S., TX
AAAA: 1) Vista Ridge H.S., TX 2) Timber Creek H.S., TX 3) James Martin H.S., TX
I could also see Mansfield taking that 3rd AAAA spot. Knowing about Wylie East’s rapid growth, part of me wouldn’t be surprised if they win AAA again over Clovis.

Is this Summit the same Mansfield Summit that made UIL Area B Finals last year? That is a pretty big accomplishment, making finals over groups like Richland, Trinity, Plano East, Keller Central, and James Martin.
They beat Mansfield and Martin at that contest, which will both be competing here (and potentially contending for a medal in my opinion). BOA is obviously adjudicated differently than UIL, but I wouldn't count them out if it is in fact the same group.

I know its unlikely (thanks VR and TC!) but it would be awesome if Clovis won a Texas regional. They are only 5 miles from the Texas Panhandle so Texas influence in music is heavy there (hence the long history of the program), but it would be really cool to see a small town win rather than a suburban school.

Any new predictions here after this weekend? Or is it pretty much the same obvious setup as before? Clovis won their local contests in Lubbock and Amarillo but that is no surprise and VR and TC did about as expected as well. Anyone know how the other groups are doing that can clue us in on who to watch for?

Wylie East beat out a 2018 6A Area Finalist by almost a full 10 points at the Little Elm competition last weekend. I can’t see them medaling again but a top 5 finish is certainly within their reach. I watched a video of Summit and don’t really see the hype surrounding them, if I am completely honest. Their show was a little underwhelming to me.

Predictions that I’m sure will turn out to be very wrong.
1. Vista Ridge H.S., TX 2. Timber Creek H.S., TX 3. James Martin H.S., TX 4. Clovis H.S., NM 5. Wylie East H.S., TX 6. Mansfield H.S., TX 7. Granbury H.S., TX 8. Midland Lee H.S., TX 9. Permian H.S., TX 10. Summit H.S., TX
Groups just out or flip-flopping with the bottom couple in finals would likely be from Coronado, Del Rio and Lubbock-Cooper.
A: 1. Pecos H.S., TX 2. Estacado Early College H.S., TX
Outstanding Music: Pecos H.S., TX Outstanding Visual: Pecos H.S., TX Outstanding General Effect: Pecos H.S., TX
AA: 1. Plainview H.S., TX
Outstanding Music: Plainview H.S., TX Outstanding Visual: Plainview H.S., TX Outstanding General Effect: Plainview H.S., TX
AAA: 1. Clovis H.S., NM 2. Wylie East H.S., TX 3. Granbury H.S., TX
Outstanding Music: Clovis H.S., NM Outstanding Visual: Clovis H.S., NM Outstanding General Effect: Wylie East H.S., TX
AAAA: 1. Vista Ridge H.S., TX 2. Timber Creek H.S., TX 3. James Martin H.S., TX

As a local, my thoughts:
Pecos should definitely sweep 1A. I don't really have any question about that unless there were some huge shifts I don't know about with them and Estacado.
A 1st - Pecos A 2nd - Estacado
A All Captions - Pecos:
Plainview all by themselves in AA as far as I know. Sweep.
AA 1st - Plainview
AA All Captions - Plainview
AAA is where things are the most interesting to me. Wylie East did great here last year and looks to be off to an even stronger start this year. They've been doing very well so far. Clovis had a fantastic showing in STL last year, I caught them from the side this weekend, looks like another very fun show this year. Granbury also had a great showing and is off to a solid start competitively, they were just behind James Martin a week ago at a DFW competition. If Summit is a AAA they will probably win Music and GE here.
AAA 1st - Clovis AAA 2nd - Wylie East AAA 3rd - Granbury
AAA Music - Wylie East AAA Visual - Clovis AAA GE - Clovis
AAAA is all Vista Ridge's in terms of the whole contest. Some great bands here, but they speak for themselves. Timber Creek is coming off of another finalist finish at DFW this year even after their big director shifts, looks like they're doing alright and should definitely be top half here. Mansfield Summit is also off to a very solid start, they've been beating bands like Duncanville, James Martin, Granbury, etc. Very strong musically. I think they're a 4A now?
AAAA 1st - Vista Ridge AAAA 2nd - Timber Creek AAAA 3rd - Mansfield Summit
So IMO Vista Ridge, Timber Creek, Mansfield Summit, Clovis, Wylie East, and Granbury are locks along with James Martin and Mansfield, that's 8. I would say a lock on Midland Lee if they hadn't lost a head director and their assistant director going into this year, IMO the ones responsible for really turning them around recently. They don't seem super phased, but I haven't seen a great video yet. Del Rio had a decent showing in McAllen and has made finals here recently so they're probably looking good again here. Odessa Permian has built some great consistency improving every year since 2014, they're doing a lot more in terms of choreography and the like this year so they'll be in the running. Frenship is one of the best programs in the area, they just haven't seem to have hit a home run for this type of competition, they tend to peak really late. I saw them at a game a week ago and they were looking very solid, very powerful music performance. Lubbock Cooper made finals here and is coming off of a very solid season in 2018, did well for a West Texas school at Austin earlier this month.
If I had to make a prediction going into this weekend:
1st - Vista Ridge 2nd - Timber Creek 3rd - Mansfield Summit 4th - Clovis 5th - Wylie East 6th - Mansfield 7th - James Martin 8th - Granbury 9th - Del Rio 10th - Permian -------------------- 11th - Frenship 12th - Midland Lee 13th - Lubbock Cooper 14th - Lubbock Coronado 15th - Midland 16th - Plainview 17th - Lubbock 18th - Creekview 19th - Odessa 20th - Abilene 21st - Hobbs 22nd - Pecos 23rd - Monterey 24th - Estacado

Vista Ridge's program seems a bit forced. Definitely not the same magic they brought last year, but it's clear to see this is a band with the talent to sustain a very high level of performance. Tons of talent on that field right now.
Also kind of fun to see them using the Mandarins stage and borrowing some of their moves.
As an aside, did Flo decide to use a camera from 1999 to film this regional? This is the most terrible quality I've ever seen.

I got to see Vista Ridge and Clovis perform on the stream and both were fantastic. Clovis was much cleaner musically than i expected and that helped sell a theme i didn't much care for. Loved the Adele in VR too

Is it just me or a lot of Texas guards stuck in a time warp? That's not to say that there are not good guard programs in TX, but a lot of the bands I see seem to have very dated colorguard design.
