How many bands have won Grand Nationals without previously winning a super regional (obviously since super regionals were introduced)? Did any band win a national title without previously winning any regional at all? Maybe a summer GN champion?

The school district is already sending Vista Ridge and Cedar Park next year. It's very unlikely they would approve. Plus, bands only get one out of state trip every other school year. I did not know about the rule of one out of state trip every other year. That is good to know. I can say for us it was pricey to get our kiddo there for this last competition but she loved it so it was worth it. Too bad Cedar Park didn't go this year. I enjoyed their show alot. I also enjoyed Rouse's show this year. (except for the VERY loud whistles.) I don’t know if every school district has the every other year rule but I think for some it only applies to competitions - they could do a parade or similar event in consecutive years

As a current senior from Lockport Township, the program may not be returning for Nationals this coming year. Conversing with my directors earlier this week, we all feel regret not attending this year as we held pace with Lincolnway at the end of the season along with beating Fishers at Indy Super and not placing too far behind Homestead. An option being talked about might be saving the money from a Nationals visit to dump into a big 2021 show. Again this is all early speculation but we had a band-wide talk before Indy Super talking about the possibity as well in some detail, so take everything I say how you will. I follow Illinois bands, and have followed Lockport Township's program for the past 10 years. I see this as a good idea. However, for a very large high school with a successful music program, I am surprised more music students do not participate in marching band. I have been told it is a strictly volunteer marching band program at the school, but I think the participation by more students will also help their program. The successes of this year should help recruit additional students.

We may not see O'Fallon Township in 2020 - they're attending the Rose Parade.

How many bands have won Grand Nationals without previously winning a super regional (obviously since super regionals were introduced)? Did any band win a national title without previously winning any regional at all? Maybe a summer GN champion? Several caveats: - San Antonio introduced Super Regionals in 2003.
- St. Louis and Atlanta Super Regionals were introduced in 2004 (Atlanta was shut down in 2018)
- Indianapolis Super Regional was introduced in 2011.
- Winston-Salem Super Regional was introduced in 2013 (was shut down in 2014).
That means the following won Grand Nationals without winning a Super Regional before: Lawrence Central (2004) Carmel (2005) Broken Arrow (2006) Avon (2008) Vandegrift (2019)

We may not see O'Fallon Township in 2020 - they're attending the Rose Parade. This could go either way. I remember last year O'Fallon did both Grand Nationals and the Hollywood Christmas Parade, but I completely understand if they would want to skip Grand Nationals to save money. On a side note, it seems like a lot of good bands are going to the 2021 Rose Parade (Broken Arrow, Hebron, and now O'Fallon Township)

Quick question - this sounds dumb - is it the same trophy passed around or do they make new Kevin’s every year? I thought they would just make a new one but it would make more sense if it just had to be returned by the next grand nats. Does anyone know? He moves around and the school returns him the next season. With their name added on a brass plate on his base, of course. Kevin has quite a nice case he travels in each year.

We'be had a strange on-off recruitment cycle where in 2016, 2018, and now 2020 there's been a huge boost to new kids wanting to join the program, while 2015, 2017, and 2019 have had low numbers. Hopefully it ends in 2021 with the new program decisions.

How did he get the name Kevin? He got this name in 2013, when the woodlands walked away with the championship. He earned the nickname kevin while down in their program during their golden age (if you can’t tell, the woodlands 2013 is my all time favorite show)

I find it interesting that Vista Ridge is going to go to GN in the same year they defend their UIL 6A state championship. It makes sense for Cedar Park as they just completed their UIL state championship year (Cedar Park is 5A). For those that don’t know Texas does State championships on a two year cycle. 1A, 3A, and 5A one year. 2A, 4A, and 6A the next year.

So:
It's way too early, but let's review the list of bands attending next year, and you'll see we have plenty of heavy weights:
1. Carmel H.S., IN (2005, 2012, 2016-2018 GN Champions) 2. Avon H.S., IN (2008-2010 GN Champions) 3. Broken Arrow (2006, 2011, 2015 GN Champions) 4. Tarpon Springs H.S., FL (2014 GN Champions) 5. Ronald Reagan H.S., TX (2019 San Antonio Champions, maybe the best band in the country in 2019) 6. Vista Ridge H.S., TX (2018 UIL State Champions, a flat-out incredible band) 7. Blue Springs H.S., MO (up-and-comer, terrific band)
With a band like Vandegrift winning (has only existed for 10 years, has never won San Antonio or UIL) it's not at all out of the question that Vista Ridge or Reagan could get over the hump next year. Then consider that Tarpon still has the hardware but just needs the design to win, then consider how great Blue Springs is becoming, then consider how consistent Avon, Broken Arrow, and Carmel are... and we might just have the best top half of all time next year. Who knows who will win? I sure don't. That seven really could go in any possible combination.

Yes, Vandy won 4A UIL back in 2013. Do you mind explaining to me what Texas bands are in which class? Although I’m Team Texas I don’t know class size and stuff like that. Not from Texas lol. It shocks me that Vandy is only 4A our of 6 classes. Can you please define the following bands class? Vandy Hebron Leander Ronald Reagan VR Flower Mound Any other big bands I’m forgetting Vandy was 4A back in 2013. They quickly moved up to 5A in 2014 and 6A in 2016 as their numbers grew. All of the bands you listed are now 6A, though Leander is about to (most likely though not yet confirmed) move back down to 5A. Our numbers teeter right at the cutoff, so we go back and forth often.

In BOA AAAA is the largest school class. All of the Texas schools that are AAAA in BOA are UIL 6A schools. UIL 5A is 1150 to 2189 students grades 9-12, 6A is 2190 and up. Also, BOA only counts enrollment for grades 10-12.

Also, when Vandy won 4A, it was the equivalent of what is now 5A. 6A did not exist at the time. The UIL created class 6A by splitting Class 1A between schools that play 6-man football and schools that play 11-man football. 6-man schools remained 1A and EVERY other school in the state moved up a class. 5A schools became the newly-created 6A.

No grounds on this yet, but there's been talks of Lincoln-Way attending. I hope Lincoln way is able to keep their numbers up as consistently as their quality is. If they fall much below where they are now I’m not sure it’ll be enough. They definitely have show design figured out though

Ok guys... let’s talk about AA. Arguably the craziest class this year, from the upset at Indy to the MAJOR upset in prelims at grand nats to things ending the way everyone thought they would, with Marian sweeping. The question is- is MC still a contender for that silver medal next year? Tarpon Springs will obviously win but with North Hardin and Miamisburg both beating them this year... things aren’t looking good for Marian. WAY to early predictions: 1. Tarpon Springs 2. North Hardin 3. Marian Catholic 4. Miamisburg 5. Jenison 6. Bassett 7. Lake Hamilton Top 7 in AA... could Miamisburg Break through again and medal? This Tim last year we would’ve thought that MC would win AA at every event. We also would’ve said “Miamisburg who?” Hadn’t made semis in a while and now (anything can happen) I’m not ruling them out to beat Tarpon Springs next year! How crazy am I - Although I think Tarpon will win, if Miamisburg and North Hardin Show up it will be interesting to see if Miamisburg was a one hit wonder, and if North Hardin still has a vengeance to come back and beat Marian Catholic for the second time EVER. Greenfield Central beat Bassett in prelims and Lake Hamilton in semifinals, were 32 overall and one point out of semifinals on score. I would include them in a discussion of top 7. Second year they have done well in class at Grand Nationals.

If I recall, Miamisburg and Marian were in the same panel. Also if I recall, North Hardin and Marian were in the same panel at Indy in October.
