It’s my understanding that bands MUST use Music Travel Consultants for BOA travel. How then can anyone negotiate any lower prices at all with a monopoly such as that? That is a shame. OTOH, maybe MTC is able to get bands FAR better prices on a trip like this by buying in bulk, so to speak. I would be curious to compare it with a band making their own arrangements. Arrangements. Ha.

Ha. Nice play on words. I’m sure there are advantages, but as someone who has done large scale procurement of services, Exclusive contracts can be rife with issues if you don’t have a good account manager.

I know there's no way I would ever pay that much for a hotel room, let alone as part of a group discounted rate. Just one place that could drop the overall pricetag of a big trip (and pretty significantly, to scale).

All the hotels in downtown Indy for GN are quite expensive, and a lot of the travelling bands are too big to fit inside a school for three or four days--especially while the school itself is in session. And staying elsewhere will necessarily be met with charter bus costs. Also, $150 a night in a major city during a large event week isn't that crazy--especially going four to a room, that's pretty decent.

We paid $150/room for WGI Dayton. Not a perfect analog, but should be comparable. Size does matter as the bigger group does limit your available choices. Also you have to balance room savings with ground transport costs. Staying downtown Indy costs more but saves on ground transportation. I book hotel rooms fairly frequently in downtown Indy for individuals and for small and large groups. Make that more like $200 a night with taxes and fees, unless you want to stay well out of town.

Ok, that adds $20k to cost estimate I presented earlier. Like I said, the largest cost is airfare.

So.....curious....How often do bands fly to competitions/parades/etc? I can't recall Brownsburg ever flying anywhere - it's buses, whether it's Macy's, Disney, or the Orlando BOA regional this year. How typical is it to fly?

How typical is it to fly? When I was in school, the only time we flew was to the Fiesta Bowl in Arizona. Otherwise it was charter busses(school busses to local competitions). Thankfully regionals and nationals were only about 4 hours away

Everything comes back to budget for most bands. They are allocated certain money from their school, they can charge a limited amount in fees and they can fund raise at a certain level. I can't imagine they just decided to use buses in a vacuum without considering the budget.

I know Mason has used charter buses to get from Ohio to Florida on a number of occasions

Air fare is always the most expensive when it comes to taking the trip to Grand Nationals. How does The Woodlands travel? They go once every two years I’d imagine it gets pricey but I’m not sure whether they travel by plane anyways

Ok guys... let’s talk about AA. Arguably the craziest class this year, from the upset at Indy to the MAJOR upset in prelims at grand nats to things ending the way everyone thought they would, with Marian sweeping. The question is- is MC still a contender for that silver medal next year? Tarpon Springs will obviously win but with North Hardin and Miamisburg both beating them this year... things aren’t looking good for Marian. WAY to early predictions: 1. Tarpon Springs 2. North Hardin 3. Marian Catholic 4. Miamisburg 5. Jenison 6. Bassett 7. Lake Hamilton Top 7 in AA... could Miamisburg Break through again and medal? This Tim last year we would’ve thought that MC would win AA at every event. We also would’ve said “Miamisburg who?” Hadn’t made semis in a while and now (anything can happen) I’m not ruling them out to beat Tarpon Springs next year! How crazy am I - Although I think Tarpon will win, if Miamisburg and North Hardin Show up it will be interesting to see if Miamisburg was a one hit wonder, and if North Hardin still has a vengeance to come back and beat Marian Catholic for the second time EVER. I’d put Camdenton up there. They’ve challenged Marian Catholic and won before.

Leander flew in 2016 and again this year, but Hebron took Charter busses this year. Cedar Park also took busses in 2016 so I guess there is not one particular way Texas bands travel.

Well it’s never to early to make waves with some good old predictions! AAAA: 1. Avon, IN 2. Carmel, IN 3. Ronald Reagan HS, TX AAA: 1. Blue Springs HS, MO 2. Dobyns-Bennett HS, TN 3. Castle HS, IN AA: 1. Tarpon Springs 2. North Hardin / Marian Catholic 3. North Hardin / Marian Catholic A: 1. Bourbon County HS, KY 2. Estill County HS, KY 3. Beechwood HS, KY I am not even gonna try to make a finalists predictions, but here are bands that could make finals: Avon - Lock Carmel - Lock Tarpon Springs - Lock Blue Springs - Lock Ronald Reagan - Lock Vista Ridge - Lock Castle Dobyns-Bennett Fishers Homestead James Bowie Jenks Lafayette Lincoln-Way O’Fallon Township Lawrence Township Wando (split?) William Mason - Lock Lockport Township Rosemount Owasso Pearland Vista Murrieta Other potential finalists, but not rumored to come: Flower Mound, TX - Lock Keller, TX Mustang, OK Haltom, TX LD Bell, TX Coppell, TX In order to be a “lock” in my mind, you have to be able to push through an off year and still be just as amazing. Carmel had an off year, and they still made finals at every comp, where as if a school like O’Fallon or Dobyns-Bennett had an off year, finals would be up in the air for them. **Disclaimer** I am NOT saying Carmel had a “bad” season. They did amazing, but it was an off year simply because it was different from their other shows as far as placement and scores. I used Dobyns-Bennett as an example because they had an “off” year and should they have gone to GN, they probably would’ve been 13th-15th. O’Fallon is around the same level as them as far as performances, and that is why I used them Long post over ☺️
