Was thinking the same thing.... At the very least, the school pays for staff (for those who are already school employees). In most jurisdictions, leading/coaching anything that is extracurricular is paid a stipend above and beyond the standard salary.

Interesting to see Windermere make the trip again, in what will be their 4th year as a program. I think they can definitely make Semis if they keep getting better as they have been. I saw Windermere in the convention center and I was pretty surprised to not see them in this time...

I don’t know. BA is always pushing the envelope so they can very easily metal IMO and I strongly believe your sleeping on Vista Ridge. Their design and musicianship has been GN metal contention for a few years now.

Vista Ridge probably would have been second at Grand Nats in 2018.

Buildings, instruments, fields, buses, K-8 music feeder program support. I am a few years retired, but maybe I have always been lucky to have worked places that supported the performing arts very well. (I was not a band director, but I was in school administration and am a band supporter) At my last school (BOA AA size) we had: 4 band directors (2 9-12 HS, 2 6-8) A dedicated department secretary $50k in extra-curricular stipends to cover extra tech staff The school picked up fuel and insurance for the box trucks, semi-trailer and box trailer a healthy instrument repair budget the willingness to purchase instruments (averaged $20k-$25k/year as the band was growing) the willingness to support competition travel for state circuit, BOA and WGI

We have one more that splits his time between the Highschool and jr high, and we have an amazing program at the Jr High that feeds into our school with 3 directors teaching 6 bands of 7/8 graders. I would guess the Highschool ones get some sort of additional salary for their extracurricular time like coaches. The district pays for UIL travel- busses and when needed hotel (For state they will pay for 1 hotel night- the boosters will pay for 2 if it’s decided to stay in San Antonio after BOA on Saturday- until UIL on Monday) . Busses to football games are paid for by the district. Any travel for BOA or any other competitions or performances are paid for by the Boosters. Our color guard director, and all tech’s are paid by the Band Booster organization and have contracts that are made with the boosters. Stadium rehearsal time (the only time the kids get practice on a field) is paid for by the boosters. The drivers and fuel and rental of trucks are paid for by the boosters (possibly a portion of that is covered for the games). Food for the kids before every game, during or after are paid for by the boosters. Clinicians brought in for master classes, and judges for the spring solo/ensemble program are paid for through the booster club. Instrument upkeep, uniforms every 7 years, and I’m sure there is some budget for some new instruments each year are paid through the school/school district. Our district is supportive, and I’m not the accountant- I haven’t combed through any budgets ( just seen some line item budgets of what we do pay for through the band booster club) but any notion that the district is helping pay for trips to nationals.... I have not seen anything at all that would show that.

I don’t know- I believe they generally practice at the school- and not the stadium... but I wouldn’t have any real idea about that... It could be that the school/district gives us some money or time for free for stadium rehearsals.... but I do know the boosters pay a sizeable amount to the district for stadium rehearsals.

What do you mean by stadium? Most high school football programs and bands just practice in their own high school "stadiums". Do you mean you rent out a professional stadium venue for rehearsal?

Our Highschool has a grass football field that the band never practices on. It’s booked with football practice for our teams and other sports, and we are not allowed to bring pit instruments and props on it at all. Rainy season makes it muddy and really unusable for band purposes. Our band practices on a part of the student parking lot for their regular practices. The district owns a stadium that the 5 high schools use for their varsity football games and is also used sometimes for jv games. The band tries to get 2-3 stadium rehearsals each year at that district stadium. Other than those rehearsals- the only time the kids are on the turf is for the halftime show and competitions.

To add to bandmomx4's response - the stadiums for TX high schools are as large as some lower division college stadiums. In fact, the stadium she mentions (Woodforest Bank Stadium) is the site for the NCAA Division III National Championship football game tonight (December 20th). It holds about 10,000 spectators, and is certainly far from the largest high school stadium in Texas. It is shared with other schools in the district and is one of 2 main stadiums in the district.

Well it’s never to early to make waves with some good old predictions! AAAA: 1. Avon, IN 2. Carmel, IN 3. Ronald Reagan HS, TX AAA: 1. Blue Springs HS, MO 2. Dobyns-Bennett HS, TN 3. Castle HS, IN AA: 1. Tarpon Springs 2. North Hardin / Marian Catholic 3. North Hardin / Marian Catholic A: 1. Bourbon County HS, KY 2. Estill County HS, KY 3. Beechwood HS, KY I am not even gonna try to make a finalists predictions, but here are bands that could make finals: Avon - Lock Carmel - Lock Tarpon Springs - Lock Blue Springs - Lock Ronald Reagan - Lock Vista Ridge - Lock Castle Dobyns-Bennett Fishers Homestead James Bowie Jenks Lafayette Lincoln-Way O’Fallon Township Lawrence Township Wando (split?) William Mason - Lock Lockport Township Rosemount Owasso Pearland Vista Murrieta Other potential finalists, but not rumored to come: Flower Mound, TX - Lock Keller, TX Mustang, OK Haltom, TX LD Bell, TX Coppell, TX In order to be a “lock” in my mind, you have to be able to push through an off year and still be just as amazing. Carmel had an off year, and they still made finals at every comp, where as if a school like O’Fallon or Dobyns-Bennett had an off year, finals would be up in the air for them. **Disclaimer** I am NOT saying Carmel had a “bad” season. They did amazing, but it was an off year simply because it was different from their other shows as far as placement and scores. I used Dobyns-Bennett as an example because they had an “off” year and should they have gone to GN, they probably would’ve been 13th-15th. O’Fallon is around the same level as them as far as performances, and that is why I used them Long post over ☺️ DB probably had the hardest show in the country this year. I think they would have made it but its hard to say because that show was obviously not designed for Grand Nationals and would have taken a while to clean.

So.....curious....How often do bands fly to competitions/parades/etc? I can't recall Brownsburg ever flying anywhere - it's buses, whether it's Macy's, Disney, or the Orlando BOA regional this year. How typical is it to fly? Did Brownsburg really take buses to the Orlando regional this fall?! Absolutely-they stopped at a high school in Georgia along the way to rehearse.

I've been a staff member for the last 12 years for a band that is on the low end of Class AA size in BOA. We have one director at the high school and one at the single feeder middle school. The school district funds those director's salaries and that is it. When the schools opened there was a lump sum given to the band programs to purchase instruments and music. For a few years after there was some funding that was less than $10k per school year. But since around 2008 there has been none. There is no money provided for outside staff, instrument purchases/repairs, music purchases, anything. It is all paid for through fees (current marching band fee is $500 plus extras if the student uses a band-owned instrument, or needs to purchases new marching shoes etc.) fundraising and donations. In fact the band boosters actually even have to pay to use buses when we go to away football games. Despite all of this we still manage to remain competitive on the local scene and a lot of it is because of a strong booster organization that is very good at fundraising, has kept clean books and keeps the band out of debt.

Pretty certain we won’t see Bentonville this year. Something about the school not wanting them to travel any further than so many miles (I think it’s 300?)
Just like Nixa, I can’t totally confirm. And it’s only December- think how much all of our guesses and predictions will have changed by July!

It hit me at a family card game that Camdenton (if they had attended) was a tru contender for AA at nationals? Personally, betting against last week Marian is a bad idea in my experience, but Camdenton beat O’Fallon early season, something North Hardin has never done. They also beat Marian, but beating Marian week 2 is to be taken with a grain of salt. Thoughts?

Students tend to be unreliable, so until it’s released officially there’s no way of knowing. Wherever they show up, I’m excited to see what they have in store! I’ve heard that both Bentonville and Jenks students were a little less than satisfied with their shows last season, and will be pushing hard to place well. I have a feeling it’s going to be a fun year no matter who shows up!
