Yay I was correct! 😁 excited for Jenks! And to think I so adamantly opposed the idea 🤔 Guess they haven't told all the students yet Did they fail to inform the Band Family before posting on the calendar or... what am I missing?

Just kidding hahah! Anyway the Jenks rule proves that BOA really values design as well as cleanliness. Jenks definitely deserved all the accolades they go in 2018. 2019 st Louis was very competitive and I didn’t agree with the results tbh, I think some bands were too high others too low

I know a student, and he was shocked when I asked him about it today. He was certain they would be at St. Louis and was disappointed with the news. I’m trying to convince him that it’s still going to be a great trip!

Tell your friend to read from the old farts here that San Antonio is a trip anyone would make over St. Louis.

I mean as a kid... everyone just wants to make finals (or win!) but I feel like if they’re disappointed it’s because they already know that they are a finals lock at STL but at the bottom of the bubble for SA. I don’t know, maybe this will push them to have an AMAZINGLY designed show (better than 2018 too!) and by that time they’ll be considered a finals lock. Or, even with an amazing show, they’ll get 31st

Prosper missed SA finals by 0.9, and finished 16th. So Jenks would have been very, very close, but probably just short.

They certainly earned a 2020 SA finals lock convo but there just too much Texas fire power in AAAA & AAA. I’m conflicted but I see them in the lower bubble for 2020 SASR. Although, considering this is a 6a State year and most 6a (AAAA) designs will be metricked towards UIL I guess anything is possible for visiting groups to SA this season but highly unlikely

I tend to agree with twhsalumniparent; Jenks could easily have been either just in or just out had they attended SA 2018, and there's really no way to know for sure, but they certainly would have been in the thick of things. Unfortunately other than the aberration that was Weiss at STL 2018, no SA bands were at STL with Jenks, and then at GN, it was of course only Prosper (who's GN scores were all over the place, I might add) who would have been an SA comparison. In GN Prelims, Jenks was about 2 points ahead of Prosper (different panels); in Semis, Prosper was ahead of Jenks about 3 points; and in Finals, Jenks finished ahead of Prosper by .1. So...yea. Make of that what you will. I will say that Jenks' "Car-Man" show in '18 did have a phenomenal visual package, which would have looked even stronger in an SA Prelims field than it did in the GN field. Jenks' Visual GE caption score was handily ahead of Prosper's in all three rounds, including in Semis when Prosper bested them by 3 points overall, and I think that signals they could have at least made a splash with that terrific show, but who knows. They probably would have been close either way, and that's all we can reliably conclude.

UIL now has a content and design subcaption and new sheets overall that are a bit more attuned to achievement than raw execution. And all the top bands are really focused on having shows that do both sides very well these days. I’ve personally thought the UIL/BOA year show design theory has been very overblown in the last half-decade, and I think it’ll only further diminish. I don’t think an out of state band will be in significantly better shape on even years than odd years, as it now stands.

I want agree with you and I have seen the UIL/BOA theory get overblown occasionally. I am however still convinced UIL judging has and probably will always be more attuned to raw achievement especially in MUSIC! Prime example is 2018 State Finals. Vista finished 4th at SASR but wins the State Championship a few days later. Musically they were the strongest in the country Arguably. Many other examples like this make me come to this conclusion. It’s not like the ISSMA/BOA variances that ultimately comes to 40/60 GE.

While I am looking as an outsider to the Texas scene I think we’ve seen good designs with difficulty do well at UIL, CTJ 2014, Flower Mound 2018. Then on the flip side you have Waxahachie still taking the more traditional designs and Cedar Park to a similar extent. Flower Mound 2018 is an interesting case study. While it was clean musically, visual and GE was definitely their stronger captions, much like Bell from they were at the height of what they were doing. I’d argue that the bands have changed much more than the sheets or judges over the last 10-15 years or so.

I would be curious to hear some insight into why Jenks would choose to attend this show. Competitively it seems to make no sense whatsoever. There are so many outstanding bands in SA. Bands that would easily be in finals in every other super regional don't even sniff finals in SA. Why take the almost 9 hour drive south? Especially in a year where you are planning a GN trip and want to build momentum up to the final weekend.

First and foremost for some great feedback against tough competition that is comparable to the nationals competition.
Also, exposing yourself to tough competition is one of the best ways to improve. Is it coincidence that Camdenton, for example, made the trip to San Antonio and then suddenly had a breakout into the top level of competition? Perhaps. Or perhaps not.

I'm not at all suggesting that the improvement isn't an internal thing. The directors and students should be credited fully for what they are doing over there. Im just suggesting that sometimes attending a big, exciting contest (even if you don't do well- which Camdenton did very well in class, so that wasn't the case here) can be motivating for a geoup going forward.

Camdenton has been doing well for a while, with the AA Champion medal and a 5th place finish at BOA Clarksville and .25 points out of finals at St. Louis in 2015. The new assistant director is very talented and is doing a lot for the program, but the foundation was already there
