In any other year Lincoln's show would be a shoo-in for Finals. It will be tough for them to get through with all the Texas bands in the running. But I won't be surprise if they sneak in. Great performance Lincoln!

Ok. Jenks' early season results belied their current skill. I can't imagine they'll be outside of the top 5 tonight, and could definitely challenge BS & Rosemount for a medal spot. A super creative show --- I wish it wasn't;t quite so much in the same vein as last year, but I give them a pass as they skyrocketed up the rankings last year and are still trying to find their design voice now that they're placing with the big guys.
Bell was Bell and I agree with others....the ensemble sound depth isn't quite there. Maybe it's too muted or just not full enough, but something's missing. Some little spark or edge to the sound. Either way, I can't imagine them outside the top half of Finals tonight with that performance and competent design.
I view Haltom, SFA, & Lake Travis as all squarely on the bubble, although I would place money on all three (or at least 2/3) getting in. I'm not as confident as I was going into this for each group; Lake Travis played BEAUTIFULLY but had a fairly low-momentum design to my eyes, especially in the visual department. Just not a whole lot of depth in demand there compared to the other groups in their panel trying to break into Finals. Haltom, on the other hand, had a TERRIFIC design, but disappointed me a bit with some really uncharacteristic playing. Too many out-of-ensemble brass moments, fuzzy articulations, sloppy releases, etc. Maybe that's just me, actually; my expectations were sky high for them (their SATX Prelims performance last year was crystal clean), so maybe they weren't any sloppier musically than anyone else in their their, I was just expecting top 5 levels of musicality. Not sure. SFA gets my award for most consistent from this group of three. Energetic, musical, and an engaging show that actually seemed to offer up plenty of visual meat & potatoes.
Coppell was in another ballgame earlier today, in my book. They're more focused on playing in the back half of Finals tonight than just getting in. A gorgeous, unique design, a terrific and super challenging music book that they executed masterfully, and a much-improved (and much larger) guard.
I actually see no reason that SFLincoln & SLCarroll couldn't knock off one of the Haltom/LT/SFA bubbles from their panel. Lincoln in particular just laid down a fantastic performance that really surprised me! Southlake Carroll also was a nice surprise a few bands back; beautiful ensemble sounds and a current, smart design. Really nice having almost everyone in this block....makes for some excellent direct comparisons!

Now I didn't get to catch all the performances, but I personally thought Broken Arrow was in a league of their own (especially GE-wise) and I would be surprised if there wasn't a sizable gap between 1st and 2nd

Franklin didn't impress me nearly as much as I wanted them to. I think I'd actually place Bentonville above them for Panel #2.
Tons of bubble bands this year, more so than any other STL in my memory. All with legit great shots at Finals, too. Lots of great bands will be left out of the show tonight.
I think we all have Rosemount, Blue Springs, Jenks, & LD Bell in for 4/5 Panel #1 locks. I think there are 7 bands that were all relatively close to each other that could fill out that 5th spot and then the next few in:
Union Haltom Stephen F. Austin Sioux Falls Lincoln Lake Travis Southlake Carroll Grain Valley
My money's on Union to take the 5th spot for Panel #1, but I wouldn't be surprised to see any of the aforementioned groups make it or be left out.
Panel #2 is Broken Arrow, O'Fallon Township, Coppell, Bixby, and then 4 bands to fill that 5th spot or the next few in:
Bentonville Camdenton Franklin Fort Zumwalt North
That's 19 groups that gave amazing Prelims performances and have real shots of playing again tonight; 21 if you count Air Academy & Trinity with outside shots. I don't know if I feel confident making any predictions beyond the 8 I called as the top 4 for each panel. Beyond that....best of luck, everyone. There's going to be some great names left out.

Bixby is a shock, but Lincoln and Franklin aren't so much.
The panel split, was in fact, 9/5. I'm glad my santeria worked.

Literally on of my favorite shows by them. But I don’t think they’ve ever medaled in prelims at a super regional . I know they didn’t in 2017. They got fourth in class for prelims and then 3rd in finals
