So when will BOA make the announcement of cx season?

Probably tomorrow when ISSMA makes the official announcement. As ridiculous as this all is, it's reality this year. Kids don't spread the Corona, but we must shut down nevertheless.

Kids don't spread the Corona Please don't propagate falsehoods regarding the transmission of this virus. Opinions about how things should or should not be handled are one thing. Outright untrue information stated as fact is another altogether.

Kids don't spread the Corona, but we must shut down nevertheless. Just to be clear, less likely to be infected or less likely to spread the virus ≠ unable to be infected or unable to spread the virus.

So is ISSMA going to make a statement? I know they were waiting for band directors to break the news to the students themselves. But I’d heard that there should be a formal statement today. All the new stations ran with it yesterday, but statement from them would have been nice.

Apparently rather than field one show that just won’t be taken to competition, it seems that Pride of BA will be attempting to do a new show for every game (I’ve heard 5 different shows). Interesting, but considering plenty of college bands do the same thing, this won’t be too difficult for a group the caliber of Pride.

It isn’t a matter of competence it is a matter of understanding what you are doing and make it executable for your students. 3-5 forms, some park and bark, easy music that people know (pep band tunes from the 60s, 70s and 80s) and some basic choreography. It isn’t that hard.

It isn’t that hard. My High School (Plano Sr. High, Texas) did a different show every week, but that was late 1970's. We also always played to our fans at away games and not to the home team side. The shows were much simpler but lots of fun to do something new each week. We got the music on Monday, and Tuesday through Thursday learned the show on the pad and performed on Friday. At the start of the year we could use our lyre's in the shows but as the year went on had to get better at memorizing the music. My heart is breaking for all the kids and I really hope it works out that the schools can have some form of safe and distanced shows but still get to get out and perform!

At the end of the day, it’s still band, and it’s great that they still get to do it in some capacity (knock on wood).

Lots of kids from competition oriented bands take the activity to seriously. It is just band and band is fun.

Ok. I really feel like I'm being super pessimistic here, so maybe I just need a reality check. I absolutely understand that directors need to plan SOMETHING for their kids, but it's sort of odd to me that anyone thinks football games will be happening. I don't know, maybe they will be. Hell, as of now, UIL marching band is still on! I do understand the need to plan for something to happen until told otherwise, but it's difficult for me to imagine extracirriculars & sports going on as planned in most parts of the country this fall. All these non-competitive announcements are followed up with plans about traditional shows for football crowds, and that's wonderful, but I have a hard time seeing that manifesting as well, mostly because I don't think there will be football games with traditional full stands, or even games at all? Maybe I'm alone on this.

Maybe I'm alone on this. That was rather my thought too. I do think it's great that these programs want to put some kind of show together for the benefit of the kids, but I have to wonder where it will ever be performed. Unless some sort of performances for supporters is enough. Some programs might have strong enough support to make that worthwhile for the kids. But yeah, traditional football games seem unlikely.

I appreciate that they are looking into alternatives, but I’m not sure how it’s any different for the kids and adults than a competition format. I didn’t read the report that seemed to help ISSMA make a judgment call on their season, but I get the impression that playing musical instruments spreads the virus. Wouldn’t that be the same at football games? Just thinking out loud here.

But even taking into account a community performance for parents, that too currently seems unlikely. Don’t most states still have caps on the number of people that can be at a gathering? I know we do in CO. Unless the situation changes drastically for the better in the next few months, I truly can’t imagine ANY performances, competitive or not, that a marching band will be able to have.

I was looking at Indiana, where we're in Stage 4.5. There is a section called "Fairs, Festivals, and Parades," which could encompass something like that. It states that if indoors, 50% capacity, and if outdoors it must provide social distancing. Now...how many people could you realistically get into a high school football stadium with 6 feet distancing all around? That's a lot of empty space.

I’m not saying folks are wrong about extra-curricular activities being tough, but I will say that people are incorrectly focusing on a typical end result.
Locally the band program isn’t even thinking about football games. Waste of time, won’t be appreciated, Band parents will be excluded as football parents will take the available seats. They aren’t really even thinking about a Community show that much.
This may be a time where the activity basically turns in to an extended period of sectionals and basics training. Sure the payoff isn’t as immediate, but the directors that can motivate and engage their groups will come out the other side in good shape.

That’s where I’m at with this, the activity more hibernating internally for a season than focusing on performance opportunities that I simply don’t think will exist. I totally get the need to perform, but I do believe this is more what our activity will look like in most places across the nation once we’re actually into the fall. It is what it is, and even as someone whose career this is, I still think band can and should take a backseat this fall semester while schools scramble to figure out how to teach kids either remotely or in person and deal with all of this. We don’t need to be figuring out how to put on an entertaining show on top of it all, and again, I say that as someone who’s lifeblood is this activity.

Yep. As much as it hurts, I just don’t see there being ANY band this year, competitive or non, and that’s most likely for the best.
As of now my college band is still acting like we’ll be fielding over 300 members in the fall, so I’m curious to see how that will turn out.

The thing is they had a great plan at Homestead for graduation, but the governor canceled it due to its size. It was outdoors, in the stadium, parents only, etc. Not sure how football would be any better you know?

Same here, but my college band has just a little over 100 members so it may be a bit easier to space out but we'll see. We still don't know if the Missouri Valley will be allowing non-conference games or sticking strictly to conference games for football. We also still don't know if fans will be allowed at football games but I'm willing to bet they won't or it'll be extremely limited capacity. Our universities music ensembles are also moving ahead with a concert season but they'll be livestreamed and be held without an audience.

Tulsa has a cap of 499 right now. Broken Arrow has no cap. Think outside the box though. If games aren't played, bands can still perform. Live streams are possible of the performance. I'm certain that band directors don't want to sit a season out and have their students go two years without marching if at all possible.
