Only major contests (BOA regionals, other competitions of significant note) get their own thread. The list of events that HR covers can be found here, for reference: www.hornrank.com/p/competitions.html?m=1Local contests and festivals generally are kept in a single thread. Otherwise we'd end up with 726581 competition threads for each season 😎 I modified this so we can house that discussion for 2020 Local Contests here

(What "local" contests outside of BOA are significant enough to make the list and how is this determined?). That's a question for Jeremiah - but I'd imagine there are a number of factors including, but not limited to: -longevity (contest has been around for a long time and built a reputation) -consistent quality in lineup (read: schedule full of nationally successful/recognized names) -availability of other major events in area (HEB & TMC would be the exceptions here, rather than the rule) -wide-reaching draw (groups from extended area traveling to attend) In a manner of speaking, one could think of them like BOA regionals but not put on by BOA.

All of the competitions featured by Jeremiah give us an important picture of the quality of bands on a national scale. I would say that although the Vista Ridge contest is great and always has a good lineup, it doesn't often do as much to tell us about how the top bands compare on a national level, nor is it really a preview of a super regional or Grand Nats the way the ones that are included are. That is not meant to be a shade at the great lineup they get each year there, just my own take.

We're always considering additional contests to include in our coverage and recap archive. In addition to what's been mentioned above, we prefer events that have adopted BOA's adjudication process and score system. That's why we held off on adding HEB Marching Contest until they adopted the BOA system two years ago. TMC doesn't exactly use BOA's system, but it's essentially the same just lacking a second music effect judge.

I don't know where to put this, but looking at the TWCP calendar (https://cpcband.org/wp-content/uploads/2020_05_20MARCHINGBandCalendar.pdf) you can see that on September 26th they are scheduled to host a BOA contest at Moorehead Stadium in Conroe, TX. I have a couple theories:
1) College Park is hosting an MFA affiliate contest similar to the Power Band Classic hosted by Lake Hamilton. 2) Round Rock ISD has decided that marching band contests will not be held at Kelley Reeves, so BOA had to find a new venue and Conroe just happened to be the best choice. 3) MFA for some reason decided a second BOA Houston contest the weekend before the Katy one is a good idea, for whatever reason.
If anyone has any other ideas as to what this means, feel free to share.

And there are alternative stadiums in the Austin area. Even ones not in the City of Austin, if that is the issue with Kelly Reeves. I can think of one in particular you could almost hit with a rock thrown from Kelly Reeves.

It's not even confirmed Round Rock ISD won't host contests anymore and in all honesty I don't think they will anytime soon. They profit heavily from hosting BOA Austin. If Round Rock did halt BOA from using their stadiums my bet is Lake Travis picks it up and Austin is moved to Cavalier stadium.
I think the power band type contest theory is more likely. Or maybe it's just some sort of mistake? I'm not sure.

The Houston Regional has for several years drawn the largest number of interested bands of any regional in the country. For the past couple of years, Cam has offered groups their preferred performance time if they switch to a different regional so she can make sure as many bands as possible get to participate (especially those that are new to BOA and don't have the points that would earn them a guaranteed performance slot). I know that MFA has explored several options for how to increase the capacity of this regional including adding Friday performances (similar to supers), operating two venues simultaneously (similar to WGI regionals), or operating two regionals on back-to-back weekends. It appears they may have decided to move forward with one of those.

It's better to find a way to increase the number of bands that can participate.

Twcp was the host school when BOA Houston was at woodforest- they lost that fundraiser for their band when it moved to Katy. This could be great for them.

According to a student from College Park, BOA Conroe will be it's own event. Yes, separately operated contests, but designed to relieve consistent over enrollment for past Houston-area regionals.

Apologies if this was already said somewhere, but does anyone know how they are determining which bands will perform on the Conroe weekend and which ones will perform on the Houston weekend? I’m assuming they would be reaching out to each director individually to see what is workable for their schedule, but that still sounds like it could be a pain.

From what I know Westlake and Westwood will go to Austin over Conroe that's two big finalist names already out of the picture

I know that I'm just saying when talking about how bands will split between Katy and Conroe we know that most bands in the Austin area that frequent Conroe will go to Katy over Conroe leaving spots open

I think it will be a similar situation to Waco. BOA Waco also gave a bit of relief to the DFW and Austin contests and in its infancy was a draw for bands that weren’t usually finalists at other contests. Now we are seeing more heavy hitters attending Waco and I think we will see the same with Conroe. It will definitely grow in popularity quickly.

It’s simply a matter of which contest a director chooses to sign up for based on their own schedule.

I'm thinking they'll push for groups who aren't attending Austin to move to Conroe instead of Katy. We don't have full lists yet, but there's surely at least a few who were already registered to do both Austin and Katy.

Interesting.
I know that BOA Waco was overbooked. That's why Westwood went ahead and moved over to BOA Houston.
I can't imagine that Kelly Reeves won't be used. That's McNeil's biggest fundraiser for the year. I don't see why the district would take that away from them. Considering RRISD is basically coming out and saying, WE ARE OPENING, it would be crazy not to have it.
I CAN imagine that Houston may be overbooked. That would make sense as to why they would throw a new contest up.

Considering RRISD is basically coming out and saying, WE ARE OPENING, it would be crazy not to have it. This was purely speculation about what the College Park schedule info meant - absolutely no reason to think BOA Austin won't go ahead as planned (if things go ahead, that is), each has nothing to do with the other.

On that note McNeil who is known to sometimes attend a contest some ways away from them for example McAllen won't be at Conroe
