Following are the results for the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association (OBA) State Championships finals. Oklahoma divides their bands based on school size. In recent years, there have been three small school classes, two mid school classes and one large school class. The state championships have one finals for the combined small school classes, one of the mid school classes and one for the large school class. Several years earlier, they had 5 classes for all bands with finals consisting of the three small school classes combined and two large school classes combined. In the early years of OBA state finals combined all classes into one finals show. In the large school class, Broken Arrow and Union have been the only two bands to win the state title except in 1996 when Owasso won. Owasso did not attend the state championships for several years in the 2000s. I think they had the goods to win in 2004 had they attended. Broken Arrow has an unprecedented 27 state titles, this includes winning every year since 2002. Among the smaller schools, Berryhill has an unprecedented 15 state titles. For a history of OBA, click here. I will include the finals results below for 1998 onward. For complete results from 1998 onward, click here. Prior to 1998, I have only found the results of the state champions going back to 1980 which will also be included. One thing I will say about Oklahoma bands, there have been a growing number of national caliber programs in recent years. While current trends suggest Oklahoma may surpass Kentucky in population relatively soon, as it stands now, Oklahoma is the least populated state to have produced a Grand National Champion marching band.

Only 1 year without a Broken Arrow or Union champion. Yep. Owasso came close again in 2011 with a 1-point separation, taking Music and Visual captions from BA. Obviously, BOA GN results weren't as close. You'll notice many years in the mid-2000s during which Owasso did not attend OBA. In 2002, OBA 6A was held at Owasso HS, a departure from the previous venues of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK and The University of Tulsa. Competition sites were(and still are) based on bidding, but Owasso was not allowed to compete. The following year, the contest was held at University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK. Owasso competed. Then, in 2004, 6A OBA was held at Union HS, and Union was allowed to compete. Owasso decided to focus on their own invitational and BOA events. They were very successful that year at BOA STL and SATX, and have held a popular early-season invitational since. Union and Owasso regularly compete at each other's contests.

Obviously, BOA GN results weren't as close. 2011... what a special year for both Owasso and Union. Their shows that year were my favorite shows either have ever performed. Owasso's was that clever, whimsical take on a scarecrow. Union's was just unbridled fun. (I have no idea why the guard was in those silver unitards and black wigs, but that was absolutely integral to the show's charm!!) Though scores never matter, I find it so interesting that these two bands were no more than .1 away from each other in four separate BOA performances: St. Louis Prelims: 2. 86.05 Union 3. 86.05 Owasso St. Louis Prelims: 2. 82.45 Union 3. 82.45 Owasso Grand Nationals Prelims: (performed on separate days with separate panels) Grand Nationals Semifinals: 5. 91.90 Owasso 6. 91.85 Carmel 7. 91.80 Union Grand Nationals Finals: 6. 90.80 Union 7. 90.70 Owasso The tight race they ran was indicative of how solidly good each show was. I believe 2011 was the only time that three bands from Oklahoma made BOA Grand Nationals Finals, and I believe it's the last time Owasso has made finals.

boahistorybuff- thanks for all the detailed history of OBA over the years. Back in the 80's the competition was quite intense and forced both programs to innovate to keep up with each other.
I'm a Broken Arrow alum, but I'd like to request a correction to the results in favor of Union...
in 1988, Union won OBA with a wonderful production of Carmen. Broken Arrow was second with a production of Home on the Range/Amazing Grace/American Overture.

Just scanned through the results again. Interesting to see that in 1989-1991 the 1A-3A champion was Broken Arrow North. Curious about when the school split occurred and when they were recombined.

Broken Arrow schools used to have two Intermediate High Schools (North and South, 9th and 10th grades) and the senior high school (11th and 12th grades.) Each Intermediate High School had its own marching band (North Intermediate = "the Sound of Broken Arrow," South Intermediate = "Spirit of Broken Arrow,") that competed in the 1A-3A OBA state championship while the senior high school (The Pride of Broken Arrow) competed in the large school OBA 4A and 5A. Both programs were quite good and there were a couple times in the 80s that one of the 9th and 10th grade bands almost beat the high school in a competition. This lasted until ~1993 when they got rid of the Intermediate HS marching bands and made the "Pride" include students from 9th - 12th on a tryout basis. At this point Marching Band became an after school, optional activity for band students.
Broken Arrow High School would have been split long ago if not for the community wanting to preserve one marching band and football team for the whole town.
Interestingly, a part of the Union school district is in the City of Broken Arrow, so Union High School could count as BA's other high school ;-).

Marching band enthusiasts are grateful that the community wanted to preserve one marching band. I don't think I need to tell this group how influential the Pride of Broken Arrow has been on the BOA Circuit.

Broken Arrow was second with a production of Home on the Range/Amazing Grace/American Overture. Heart! I'm a Renegade Regiment alum (Union '91), and was about to point out the same error. Thanks for your kind words. Now I'm a BA Pride parent!

Some more history:
βIn 1980, Ray Bell became director of the [Union] High School Band and ... A bunch of us Seniors decided we needed a better name that was more in line with the cool names of the Drum and Bugle Corps which we worshiped. At the time, we were very enamored with the Phantom Regiment as we were playing one of their arrangements in the show that year and had done some other Phantom arrangements. I believe that I was the person who first uttered the name "Renegade Regiment", but it was such an obvious thing at the time that it wasn't much of a creative leap. Regardless, pretty much everybody loved the name immediately." β Tony Plank (class of 1981)...from UnionBands.com
This year, Union High School is voting to change their mascot from the Redskins. Too bad they couldn't all just become Renegades!

thanks! want some more history? I don't know when this originated, but while I was in the RR, we strived to be "Gummy Bear Perfect." Before performances, we'd each get a gummy bear to lick & stick somewhere on our helmet, instrument, etc. (this is sounding so funny now) If we marched a perfect show, we got to EAT the gummy bear afterwards. If we messed up, we got to bite its head off, for a taste of perfection, then surrendered the body. You could tell how good/bad a show was by the pile of dead gummy bears.

When Barnett retired after 2004, Union highlighted his years with a "Gummy Bear Perfect" campaign.

The past couple years have seen a lot of changes in Oklahoma marching band as Covid and director shuffles changed a lot of the landscape on every level. Most notable is of course the downfall of Union, the sudden resurge of Yukon, Collinsville's and Sapulpa's upsets at OBA this year, Piedmont losing their 15 year long medal streak, and the meteoric rise of Edmond Santa Fe. Berryhill seems to be starting to face some tougher competition as well. Of course, what seems to be the biggest story here is just how GOOD bands in the state in general are getting. BA remains king in Oklahoma, but over the years I can see two potential threats to their reign as they get better and better- Bixby and Mustang. For years, I thought Owasso and perhaps Union were the only challengers to BA's decades-long title, but as the years have evolved, they have begun making incredible names for themselves and continue to get better every year. If Jenks continues the way they are after this year, I could also see them making history on that front as well. So while Covid did usher in many changes for the worse, we did see a huge transformation in the sheer competitiveness of OBA. It was competitive before, but the past couple of years even the bubble for finals is getting tighter, and watching it in the coming years is going to be very very interesting!

Thanks for the update. Yes the growing depth of strong Oklahoma bands have been impressing us all. I think Union will be back and yes I do think BA will have some formidable challengers in the near future.
