American Fork has a great show this year, the singer reminds me of Cedar Ridge from 2013... even a similar show concept. They sound fab.

Green Canyon and Farmington are going to be really exciting to watch going forward. How are classes in Utah allocated? Is it by school size, or band size? I've been trying to figure that mystery for years because Green Canyon High School size is bigger than Wasatch High School but Green Canyon is classified as 4A band and Wasatch is 5A. However, Roy High School who's 6A has 1,755 students and Uintah High School who's 4A has 1,725 students, but Wasatch High School who's 5A has 2,089 students. My theory is that it's a hybrid of size and school but I'm not sure.

How are classes in Utah allocated? Is it by school size, or band size? Hi! I haven't posted on here much recently but I saw your question and decided I would respond since I live in Utah. I am not extremely familiar with how the school classifications work, but I know that these are the same classifications for the schools across all sports and activities, not just band. If I'm not mistaken, schools are classified based on enrollment, however geography is taken into account as well. They try to keep the sports districts geographically close to each other, so I think they do some minor rearranging to prevent a single 4A school from having to travel across the whole state each week to compete against the other 4A schools for instance. The whole thing is a bit unusual to me, but that is the impression that I have from what I've heard from people who actually went to school here and from looking at the district maps.

Watched all of 4A live on Tuesday and I have to say, people are going to have to stop writing off Texas small bands as mediocre. Watching the contest from top to bottom convinced me that 4A directors spent their quarantine grind learning what show design is, because the designs were what you'd come to come to expect from a majority of AA/A BOA bands, especially from bands like Melissa, Argyle, and Wills Point.
Not only were the designs a step up from 2018, but so was the performance level. I have heard many people say that Canton was stronger this year than they were in 2018 when they won. Thing is, Canton placed 5th this year. "Finals" was incredibly stacked, and that's without a few major contenders that did not attend because of COVID, such as everyone's favorite south Texas 4A, Hidalgo.
Argyle was absolutely stunning, top to bottom. Their show gave the spotlight to all sections, with standout performances from their front ensemble. They also made sure to show off their individual talent, with beautiful solos on clarinet, flute, flugelhorn, and more. I was almost brought to tears by their ballad, Earth Song, because of the incredibly mature and controlled sound from the brass during their soft moments. The marching technique across the field was also at the highest level I've seen from any small band, let alone bands of all sizes. Argyle is one of the most storied 4A (and old 3A and 2A) bands in the state and it's clear they don't plan on slowing down, even as they grow and inevitably move up to 5A. Congratulations to the Argyle band on their 7th state championship and 9th medal! You can already find a video of their state performance on a certain video streaming site, I'd recommend everyone watches it as soon as they get the chance.
Melissa made a statement in 2018 when they finished 6th in 4A finals, only their 2nd time ever attending state and the first time in 4A (made state finals in old 2A back in 2011). This year, they brought us a show with some of the most mature design of the night, and there was some steep competition. They also brought us some very talented soloists and an absolutely wonderful guard which we saw back in 2018 as well. Once Argyle moves up a classification, I think Melissa will remain a regular championship contender.
While Burnet hasn't been on top of their game in recent years, this is not their first standout state performance. Burnet made state back in 2008 placing 7th and again in 2012 placing 3rd. Afterwards, they went through a series of director changes and did not make finals from 2014-2018, even missing state altogether in 2016. However with another director change this year, they have skyrocketed in a similar way to how Vista Ridge did from 2016 to 2018. With a brand new design team featuring big names like Jason Robb and Daniel Montoya Jr., Burnet put on an incredibly engaging and clean show. In fact, they were the only band other than Argyle to receive a 1st place ranking from a judge. I expect great things from this program in the coming years.
North Lamar did what they have always done, which is take a Tarpon Springs show and perform it without watering anything down. While that on its own is impressive, the fact that they did it during a pandemic and still placed top 5 in a judging system that really only cares about cleanliness on paper is a testament to the talent from this school. Even if it seems like they're on a decline, it would be foolish to count them out as a future state champion once again.
Canton were the defending state champions and the performance they gave on Tuesday showed they weren't ready to give it up. Unfortunately, the growth of other bands outpaced them and they had to settle for a still very respectable 5th place. What I think hurt them the most were stickouts in the brass section, primarily from the low brass. Regardless, those kids put their full heart and soul into the performance and was one of the more emotional moments of the night.
Wills Point was one of the largest bands of the night and they had a sound to match the size. Their show design was one of the most cohesive in my opinion and they played with a passion likely brought on from their surprisingly low placement at area in 2018 which kept the regular finalist out of the state competition altogether. Wills Point is a mainstay and they proved to us that 2018 was a fluke.
Bridge City was one of the bands I was most interested in coming into this season, as they had plans to attend BOA Houston. This was their first year making state in 35 years and their first finals appearance as well. Their show was a dedication to a band director from a nearby town who unfortunately passed away from COVID-19 earlier this year. Bridge City will be a band to focus on in the coming years.
Calallen is the most consistent band in the Corpus Christi area and has qualified for state in old 4A many times from 1980 all the way up to 2013. As south Texas got more competitive they dropped in placements, but they were still a very solid band. Knowing this, it was expected to see Calallen at the state competition, especially given the lack of area powerhouses Hidalgo, Port Isabel, and others. However, Calallen proved to us that they will remain very competitive even with those powerhouses present.
Kennedale in 9th place may seem a little underwhelming (especially following their 5th place finish in 2018), but they were the only band from Tarrant County, where they had some of the most strict COVID-19 restrictions in the state. To fight through the craziness of the year and still place in the top 10 of probably the most competitive 4A competition in the history of UIL is a testament to the talent in both the students at the staff at this school.
Rounding off finals was China Spring, previously one of the top military bands in 4A. After going through a director change, they have started transitioning into a corps style band and their show was a combination of both traditions. Other than the design, one of the most peculiar things about this band was how they almost missed state due to a tabulation error by the judges. They placed 6th behind Lake Belton due to a very low placement from one visual judge (they even beat Burnet, the area champions, in music). Once this was resolved (the 20 became an 18), Lake Belton was still allowed to attend as well as China Spring. This also brought the total number of participants up to 20, which is the minimum for taking 10 finalists instead of just 7.
A couple other bands I would like to mention include Canyon and Lake Belton.
Canyon HS is in Canyon, TX, a suburb on the outskirts of Amarillo. If you recall, Amarillo was one of the worst places in the country for COVID-19 at some points and it unfortunately showed in the progression of the show. The opener of the show was incredible, their sound was massive and controlled and I would've had them above Wills Point based on that movement alone. The closer is what held them back as it started out with a serious tear that they were not able to recover from. They placed 11th overall and were only 3 ordinals below China Spring. Kudos to those kids for putting on an amazing performance despite the circumstances, I fully expect Canyon to resume their regular elite placements in the coming years.
The other school I want to mention is Lake Belton, the first band to qualify for state the year they open. Splitting off from Belton HS, who were approaching 4000 students in 2019, Lake Belton gave a performance that I would expect from a regular state qualifier (that I think was severely underscored at state). The maturity in how this band of only freshmen and sophomores play is nothing short of incredible. I fully expect Lake Belton to remain competitive as they grow in size.
If I wanted to, I could say great things about every performance of the day, but I will spare both me from the time commitment of writing it and you the time commitment of reading it (or scrolling through it). I would not be surprised to see some of these incredibly talented groups start participating in BOA and finally give Texas good A/AA representation in the circuit.
