After watching that Blue Springs show I don’t even what to think. It’s extremely different from what they did 3-4 years ago. And still a bit different from their 3rd place GN show. It’s very drum corps like, which I guess is a good thing? It’s just such a different production than what I felt like I’ve seen out of Broken Arrow or most Texas bands. Lindsey and Steve are amazing at what they do, I’m excited to see how things fold out here in a few weeks. The kids really seem invested into the movement which is amazing for the first week of October to me.

One of the bands I’m most interested to see is Union. They have had such a dominant program historically but a few road bumps this year already. After these last couple weeks’ placements, does anybody still have them in the top half of finals? After placing below Camdenton and Fayetteville last week, it's hard for me to put them above 9th, because I really don't see Fayetteville pacing in the top 10. I will say I was shocked by that result, despite getting 3rd at the Owasso Invitational. Though I do remember hearing they didn’t have much in terms of marching band last year.

Not sure what to think about Camdenton. Wasn't wowed by that show. Mustang's show felt very "safe" from a design perspective, and they really need to tighten up the ensemble sound, especially in brass. They could be pretty good, but I think this show has a lower ceiling and other groups might be able to scoot by them by the time BOA STL rolls around. I haven't seen anything to lead me to believe this won't be Broken Arrow and Blue Springs battling it out for 1st and 2nd, and then a big yawning gulf between them and everyone else. As expected, really.

Yeah, there's that, and I've heard of a lot of drama going on in the band right now. With students and directors... It's sad to see that kind of thing happen to any band program, especially a big one like Union.

Damn BA sounds absolutely amazing this year. Their shows design seems a bit different from what it was in 2018-2019 but I love it. I think it's going to service them more at Nats and St. Louis as their show seems a bit easier to clean than something like 2018, but I could still definitely see BS stealing a caption at St. Louis.
I dont think that anyone is going to pierce the top four of BA, BS, O'Fallon and Coppell but the bottom 10 bands are going to be such a massive toss up in comparison to the past due to COVID that I'm not even going to try to predict placements in fear of embarrassing myself come finals lol. I will say though that I am extremely impressed with Bentonville and Grain Valley, and I'm guessing that this is going to be one of the best years Arkansas and Missouri have had in a while.

Worth also noting that these are not their show uniforms (band or guard) so that'll help with the feel of the show as well.

Definitely feels a little light difficulty wise for BA. Its very pretty and they’re very clean - so that’s good. Kinda reminds me of phantom with those props

I think we have seen in years past that underestimating Texas bands (even ones you have never heard of) is a bad idea. I'm not suggesting any Texas group is going to contend to win here, but I think they will all fare pretty well.

Predictions are definitely fun to try to make (and fun to laugh at ourselves at when we're way, way off...definitely been there). This is honestly why I'm just going to make zero predictions and just see what happens with all the bands. I can remember in 2017 thinking "Oh Cypress Falls is a shoo-in for St. Louis," but I and many others didn't take the impact of Hurricane Harvey into account, and they finished in 16th. I will say that the designs of so many of the shows that will be seen in St. Louis in a little over 2 weeks have been outstanding, and I can't wait to see how everyone lines up!

Broken Arrow's taken down the video of their show, but I managed to watch it before it disappeared. I like that they're back to a more traditional show after going a little off book for 2018 and 2019. They sound fantastic already, although I have to agree the difficulty isn't quite as intense as some of their other shows. I think by the end of the season though their show is going to be a monster for Grand Nationals.

I know it's kind of unrelated, but I love Bluespring's uniforms this year. They might become my favorite of all time once I see a video that had higher quality than 480p. Right now it's between their current unis, their 2019 unis, and Avon's 2009 unis with that black face mask thing. The BS art design is absolutely fantastic and I bet they're going to be a top half of finals lock by next year as their school's population and their reputation keeps growing. I think that'd make St. Louis more interesting anyway, BA is amazing and they deserve everything they've won but I wish they had more competition for gold every year and I don't really see anyone besides BS taking thay from them anytime soon.

I would love to see some of the DFW area power house bands show up here. We generally only see those match ups at Grand Nationals. Would be cool to see some of them up there earlier. Although I’m sure they are busy with UIL, school, TX competitions, and Footballs games. (Do any other states have their high school bands go to away footballl games besides TX?) I thought it was so interesting to hear that happens.

Going to take a crack at the top 30 and a deeper dive into class placements. Cannot WAIT to see how incorrect I am, as usual! 😂 Will definitely be updating at some point after the Iowa regional.
I definitely think Bentonville West, Collierville, Collinsville, Fort Zumwalt West and Jefferson City could all crack the 30th place threshold, as well. The "middle tier" is always an interesting one to keep an eye on.

When I was in Bixby, we only took half of our band to each away game so that we didn't take up the whole visitor side (most high schools in our class have small stadiums) and to avoid having to schedule 6 bus drivers just for the band.

This is a very thorough ranking, though- I think it looks really great. Union first out sounds shocking, but in context of the season so far I think first out is fairly accurate. I personally would put Grain Valley above Camdenton after the nearly three point spread between the two last week (albeit at different events). It’s like you said- everyone will probably be updating or further cementing their predictions come Sunday morning. This is the most exciting year for AA in a long time. Also, thanks for noticing Nixa! I have a lot of confidence in them and I’d like to see them do as well as you predict.

While the Dallas Regional is still fresh in my head…
Coppell: Probable medalist. Their prelims perf. Yesterday at Dallas was stronger than finals and I still think BA and BS are probably too strong to beat, however this is not your typical Coppell with their new director (Kim S), they’re very good.

Southlake Carroll: When I saw them yesterday at prelims I actually thought they were too dirty to make finals. Visually it was kind of a mess and musically there were some exposed moments that were not clean. However, they had their entire show on and let me say it’s a very good show - especially the ballad. They just need to clean if they want a good placement here - the content is probably there and the show definitely is.
It is in a similar style to their 2019 show.

James Martin: They aren’t huge but their brass-line packs a solid Texas punch. The show is about the sandman and as far as themes go, it’s pretty corny LOL. They actually have a sandman costume that looks like a banana really. I actually had them in finals in Dallas but like I said I’m bad at judging!
Musically they’re probably in finals here at STL, as for visual and GE i’d say probably not. But two weeks to clean is a lot so anything can happen.
I’d try and predict this show but I really don’t know these bands well enough tbh so I will leave you all with these thoughts!

Updated predictions:
1. Broken Arrow 2. Blue Springs 3. Coppell 4. O’Fallon 5. Prosper 6. Carroll 7. Rosemount 8. Camdenton 9. Bentonville 10. Lincoln 11. Mustang 12. Bixby 13. Grain Valley 14. James Martin
Next 5: Union, Fayetteville AR, Blue Springs South, Nixa, Fort Zumwalt North
This is difficult, but the big change on my prediction is taking out Union from finals. I’ll be happy to be wrong here, but this is what it seems based on this weekends competitions.
I think Grain Valley’s score is too low, their show has a lot of potential. But the fact is Camdenton beat them by 4.5 points in Iowa.
I finally got good videos (not YT) of both Rosemount and Lincoln in YIM. I get YIM judging doesn’t translate well in BOA. These are very different shows, but really performed well by both groups. That said Rosemount’s show seems cleaner. I agree with the judging. Not exact, but translating it to BOA captions, Rosemount got both GE and Music, Lincoln got Visual.
The Dallas competition showed us a lot of the Texas schools coming to St. Louis. Coppell is definitely a medalist right now.

I agree with Coppell being the probable bronze medalist. After finishing 4th in prelims at Bedford with what I thought was a stronger performance than their finals run and then still being able to grab 5th in finals neck and neck with Keller, they're going to have a very good rest of the season. This is one of the strongest shows they've had in awhile, especially visually, and it's very impressive that they're doing this with a lot of new staff in their first year at the school.

Union has two weeks to clean so they could make it.
