With school starting for some students here in Indiana next week, it got me to wondering what other school district's Covid-19 protocols are for this fall? Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), Indiana's largest school district:
Athletics & Extracurriculars
Student athletes are not required to wear masks during practice and games. Band, orchestra and choir groups must limit the duration of practice and performance to no more than 45 minutes. Bands and orchestras must be socially distanced between string and percussion instruments (with face masks if not vaccinated), and wind instruments (without masks). Choirs must maintain social distancing and wear face masks if not vaccinated. Public attendance at games and extracurricular performances is allowed. IPS will consider these public events and follow MCPHD guidance of asking attendees to wear masks if they are not vaccinated.

IPS, so far, is a major outlier in Indiana with that protocol.

My county district which neighbors Charlotte, NC is business as usual for extracurriculars. Today the governor announced the guidelines for the upcoming school year that masks are still required in K-8 but for high school are no longer required for students and staff who are vaccinated. So for now the band I work with is planning to have our usual band camp the first two weeks of August. Obviously this can change if cases continue to rise but for the moment it looks like we'll be moving forward with a normal competitive season.

IPS, so far, is a major outlier in Indiana with that protocol. IPS is also an urban district with a majority of the student/family population among the socioeconomic demographic most likely to be unvaccinated.

The are an outlier in many ways (size, demographics, community) in Indiana. One of their Marion County peers, MSD Warren just announced a similar protocol. Of course that protocol continues to be an outlier in Indiana.

It looks like the Fort Mill School District (Catawba Ridge, Fort Mill, Nation Ford) is joining a few others and not supporting major travel out of the area / state. In 2020 it was really only Byrnes that put on a noteworthy competitive show in SC.
We really missed a lot last year guys. I think even the best schools will have to check themselves to not go over the top with visual designs and conceptual designs because don't forget that there are still two freshman classes that didn't get a normal season. Even the upperclassmen aren't as trained. Concert season has been screwed up too. Not to mention fundraising.
Yes Mason got a season, Avon & Carmel got a sort of season, Texas got a sort of season - even though not everyone participated in state. I think we need to be realistic about what bands can achieve and what can we can expect. It would almost be a shame to ask these kids to achieve a show they couldn't do.
I know I made a lot of noise last year for sticking up for what I believed about Covid (and I still stand for all of it). But entire ensembles might not be able to pull off that show they put off for 2021, and it might be hard for bands to pickup right where they left off in 2019. I am super excited we finally have BOA back, but I expect some teething troubles as we get back into this.
Everyone had to deal with Covid and none could fly under the radar.

Austin is back in Stage 4 for covid so that could affect some of the Austin bands, just listing out some of the major hitters from Austin that could be affected (James Bowie, Vandegrift, Lake Travis, Westlake, Westwood)
There are some bands that are in the Austin area but not *in* Austin that covers all of the Leander ISD bands except for Vandegrift and most of the Round Rock schools I believe. Hendrickson is also not in Austin.
Stage 4 means that masks are now required/recommended and large outdoor gatherings are advised against.
I do not know how this will affect the nearby cities that also house strong bands like Pflugerville, Buda, Leander or Cedar Park but surely someone here knows.

I know the school my sister's kids go to the band was hit extremely hard. They had a rather large graduating class in 2020 and was unable to recruit because of covid. They will be lucky if they have 60 band members this year and they are a Class AAA BOA band. It looks like the Fort Mill School District (Catawba Ridge, Fort Mill, Nation Ford) is joining a few others and not supporting major travel out of the area / state. Illinois will reportedly be announcing a mask mandate for all students today.

Lake Central has mandated masks, just days after saying masks would not be required.
This is because Lake County is no longer in the "blue" phase, and they must be back in blue phase for three weeks before masks will become optional.

Based on the local news from several parts of the country, I think it is safe to say that with this Delta variant, we are still very much in the grips of a pandemic. I think this is going to make this season extremely hard to predict. This along with the fact that there was no BOA last season and many school band programs had a lot of restrictions placed on their practice time certainly makes me wonder what impacts that may have on the fall competitive season. My fingers are crossed that we can get through the 2021 BOA season. I think it is inevitable however that school policy and restrictions are going to remain very fluid this fall. I can see an outbreak in a school district or high school heavily impacting a marching band. For example, a two week period of remote learning with no extracurricular activities, limited bus travel, or cancellation of out of state activities could spell the end of a marching band's competitive season or at the very least inhibit them from attending BOA. Again my fingers are crossed but I think it is becoming clear that things are still not going to be back to normal this fall.
Now I am asking that everyone on this platform NOT use this post to express their views on vaccinations, mask mandates and/or Covid restrictions. We went through that last year and it got kind of ugly. No matter what our individual views are, that is not going to change what states and individual school districts decide for their students. I simply point this out because I think we all need to realize that more than likely, things are not just going to snap back to normal this fall.
So I think we should keep this thread strictly for updating our members on changes in individual school Covid protocols as we head into the competitive season. In other words, let's not get confrontational.

Agreed, any discussion spiraling into an argument will result in removal of those posts and a lock on the thread.
