Asking this question as it is relevant to my current situation. I am sitting at a football game in Minnesota and the visiting team's band is not here. And before anyone asks, visiting school is 15 miles away.
In Texas, typically the band travels unless the distance is excessive. Tonight, for example, Vista Ridge is playing in Abilene, which is 200 miles away. Vista sent the leadership, battery and seniors - basically a solid pep band.
I don't know what is typical in other states.

Indiana does not. I think there are some exceptions like if your team makes State finals or your playing a neutral game at LOS. Also maybe if the team makes semi State too. But yeah, I'd say 99% of the time no. Away games are practice nights lol

We typically went to 1 away game every year but this was a looong time ago. I want to say all our away games were less than 50 miles away with rare exception

Yeah, in Texas football coaches get testy if the band ISN'T there.

My freshman year we played a playoff game at Centerville. CJB was at GN (we didn't go that year because focus was on Midwest), so we went and did pregame and halftime performances as the away team.
...it was the best reception we had at any game, even at home π¬

In the late aughts, Mason started sending a pep band (about 60) to all away games.

My (Texan) alma mater had a rule that if you were within 100 miles of a playoff game, you were required to attend. This also applied on Thanksgiving weekend. Yes, kids did get reprimanded if they were found out.
However, that rule hasn't been relevant for my alma mater for close to a decade now. π

A band director acquaintance of mine in California was asked several years ago by his principal about having the band attend away football games. The band director replied with, "Absolutely, as long as the school pays for the busses like they do for the football team." The band never did go to an away game.

SC hardly ever. Very small bands might but the competition bands mostly no. Maybe a pep band for playoffs or something if enough kids are interested in going. SC bands seem to have a very restricted football halftime slot of only 15 min.

Back in my day (LOL) Michigan bands did not. I believe that is still the case. In fact, my college band only went to an away game the first game of the season and for any bowl games.

That was one of the big changes for us when we moved from an Oklahoma band to a Texas band. In Oklahoma the band went to one or two away games, but not the others. In Texas the band goes to all! the district does pay for the band busses for the away games.

I know when I was in band, we traveled to every away game unless it was too far or if the stadium was too small. No joke, my senior year, we had to skip a game because the stands were so small that not even half of our band could fit. I know that next week, Lumberton's opponent has a small stadium so I'm expecting them not to go. Sucks having a big band playing against small schools.

Franklin, TN always went to away football games...until about 4 years ago. EVERYTHING is paid for by the boosters and by doing BOA and more traveling, going to football games was cut to half the band. At the beginning of the year you choose pep band A or B and then they rotate.

It's a pretty universal no for Indiana bands.

Interesting stuff. Thank you all for the replies. I guess we kinda take it for granted here in Texas. I love having both bands playing in the stands through the entire game - it just makes the atmosphere so much fun.
The other thing that stood out at the game I attended in Minnesota on Friday was that the band for the home team was done after their halftime performance. The kids all made a beeline for the band hall and changed out of uniforms and put away their instruments, most then went home.

Not that being with the band the entire time was ~*always so amazing and fun*~ but I *gasp* had friends outside of band and it sometimes sucked not being able to hang out with them during games and enjoy the experience. I know some schools do third quarter off, and even that would have been great.

It was good!

I'll second principalagent on this, I too enjoyed getting out of band after halftime.... but for different reasons. I only joined band because I loved the competition. I also disliked Fridays greatly for football.

Back in my day (and still), we didn't even wear uniforms. Khaki pants/shorts and a black shirt.
Done pretty much every game at halftime.
