Missouri as of 10/16 1. Blue Springs 2. Camdenton 3. Blue Springs South 4. Grain Valley 5. Nixa 6. Fort Zumwalt North 7. Kickapoo 8. Rockwood Summit 9. Ozark 10. Hollister
A 1. Hollister
AA 1. Camdenton 2. Grain Valley 3. Fort Zumwalt North 4. Rockwood Summit
AAA 1. Blue Springs South 2. Nixa 3. Kickapoo 4. Ozark
AAAA 1. Blue Springs
Honorable mentions for excellency at recent competitions: Sullivan, Republic
A few points on this analysis: Hollister debuts on my list in the top 10 after a narrow win over Ozark at the Branson Invitational. They are the first 1A band to be in the top ten. However, history leads me to place Ozark above them, though not by much. Although Blue Springs South scored ridiculously close to Blue Springs at the UCM invitational, even taking a caption, I am weighing Camdenton’s regional championship win as heavier for the time being. Despite not competing this weekend, I am placing FZN above Kickapoo based on Kickapoo’s ten-point loss to Bixby at the Branson Invitational. I have yet to see Rockwood Summit perform this year, but I have confidence placing them above Ozark based on recent history. Lastly, though I believe Grain Valley will best BSS at St. Louis, I have placed them in this order to best reflect data from the past weekend.

Blue Springs Honorable mentions for excellency at recent competitions: Sullivan, Republic Some fun data about these different groups, for anyone into that: Eight out of ten schools on this list can be associated with a major metropolitan area in Missouri or a suburb of that city, three being from Kansas City, three being from Springfield, and two from St. Louis. Hollister is outside of Branson, a recognizable town, but not significantly large, and Camdenton benefits from being the home of Lake of the Ozarks, one of the largest and most profitable commercial inland destinations in the country. Likely, the reason Hollister and Camdenton are viable despite not being from richer suburbs of large cities is due to both being located in or nearby nationally recognizable tourist destinations, and the town’s decision to use that money in the school system. Blue Springs HS is the largest high school in Missouri, no doubt lending to its success on the national level. Kickapoo and Blue Springs South are also among the largest. Camdenton and Grain Valley, while being small for BOA, are also within the 100 largest schools in the state. Hollister is the smallest school in the top 10, with under 500 students 9-12. Their win over Ozark and Republic this weekend reflects the power of instructor dedication and talent over a larger talent pool.

If we just went straight down the SR scores from yesterday it would end up like this: 1. BA 2. Mustang 3. Owasso 4. Bixby 5. Union 6. Choctaw
Of course Jenks is in the top few somewhere, but hearing some of the scores was quite shocking. Some people might have predicted these placements but I certainly didn’t see them coming at all. Placements were both higher and lower than I was personally expecting.

Missouri as of 10/24
1. Blue Springs 2. Grain Valley 3. Camdenton* 4. Blue Springs South* 5. Fort Zumwalt North 6. Timberland 7. Sullivan 8. Nixa 9. Lindbergh 10. Kickapoo**
* The results of the past season as well as the past five years of scoring history has been given more weight than a 0.025 score difference here. ** Did not compete this weekend, but given recent scoring history I believe this to be accurate.
Edited to account for Rockwood Summit’s Indy performance and the fact that I missed Lindbergh (oops)

I think you’re right to have Camdenton above Blue Springs South. Could this be Blue Springs South’s big break into their most successful era yet? Who knows. That .0025 could have come down to anything however and honestly it is such a minuscule margin that it’s definitely a good call to still have Camdenton above BSS simply given Camdentons history of success is not torn down by a 0.025 finals miss.

South’s finals run scored an 80.0, identical to Camdenton’s prelims run. Had there not been a 2 point discrepancy between Camdenton’s individual and ensemble music we would have seen them in finals. The two had the exact same music score in prelims, and had that individual music score more accurately reflected the group’s quality, it would have made up for the near tie in GE. Camdenton was also ahead in visual. That, combined with their regional win and history of consistent AA medals and semifinals, leads me to rank them higher.

I checked my notes, and it appears so far this year, I've been in the audience for 137 performances by 91 Ohio competition bands. I'll get to see 70 of those bands again, and 55 others, at the OMEA state finals over the next two weekends. Beyond that, I'll see at least video of Ohio bands appearing at Grand Nationals and anything else I can find online. But of those 91 bands, the following, in my opinion, are the eleven that I rank precisely in the middle:
41. Covington 42. Sycamore 43. St. Edward 44. Delaware Hayes 45. St. Clairsville 46. Willoughby South 47. Reynoldsburg 48. Buckeye 49. Black River 50. Franklin Heights 51. Springfield
I should note that, for bands I saw early in the season, I have allowed for a modest rate of improvement and adjusted their placements accordingly. I expect everything will shake up after SMBF and BOA, although the band on this list most familiar to folks here, Sycamore, appears to be done for the season (they have a Disney trip in a few weeks). It was very hard to get a good read on their performance at the Buckeye Invitational (where they presented their competition show in the festival class for comments only) because their pit was amplified to painfully loud levels. People around me, 35 rows back from the field, were wincing.

Illinois Rankings by score after just about every band competed this past weekend: (I boosted O'Fallon's by 5 since they were at a BOA) 1. Lincoln-Way 90.85 2. Marian Catholic 90.45 3. Morton 89.60 4. O'Fallon 88.05 5. Normal 86.60 6. John Hershey 86.30 7. Edwardsville 86.075 7. Victor J. Andrew 86.075 9. Prospect 85.475 10. Lockport 82.30
And honestly this reflects my personal ranking too. 3-7 might shake up after this weekend.

I will say that I saw BA live and anyone would have to be phenomenal to take a caption from them.

MASSACHUSETTS1. Dartmouth 2. Wakefield 3. Blackstone-Millville 4. Oliver Ames 5. King Philip Regional 6. Oakmont-Overlook 7. Mansfield 8. Reading 9. Everett 10. Methuen I agree with your top five (though I'll have to take your word on Oliver Ames—I swear they never did NESBA when I lived in MA!). But I have different thoughts on the bottom five: MASSACHUSETTS1. Dartmouth 2. Wakefield 3. Blackstone-Millville 4. Oliver Ames 5. King Philip Regional 6. Billerica 7. Oakmont-Overlook 8. Everett 9. Norwood 10. Mansfield/Reading/Joseph Case My list considers the last few seasons for each of these groups. For this current season, though, it seems like Norwood is having a down year whereas Reading (and Mansfield?) are having fantastic seasons. I can't wait to see how it all shakes out at championships this Sunday!

Agree with this if over last few seasons, but feel like Shepherd Hill should make an appearance, perhaps over Everett (SH has placed high in US Bands many years). Case appears to be having a couple of down years after being 1 Open winner a number of times for US Bands. For Oliver Ames, you're absolutely right. They did NESBA way back in the late 90s/early 2000s when I was in school, but then quit for a number of years to focus on MICCA. They're only recently back in NESBA, and while they're a clear top 5 right now, I think the top 4 are very solidly Dartmouth, Wakefield, BMR, and KP.

Has anyone done PA yet? Kind of a tough one for sure Ugh...PA lol. I love some of the PA bands but man, with no statewide circuit and knowing what I know about the quality of judging in some of the circuits, that is super tough to say. My top 3 are Norwin, Kiski (in either order depending on the year) and then probably Spring Ford. Over all, looking at the past 10 years of competitions for both Norwin and Kiski, Norwin has had more success but if you go back another 10 or 15, Kiski had more success, go back ANOTHER 10 or 15 and Norwin had more success so it really is just Year to Year up there. My personal Opinion is that if we look at overall consistency, scoring, regionals, state Champs won, Norwin is ahead in that regard but Kiski wasn't competing in the early 80s but I doubt that would have affected a very Strong Norwin High School. All in all, Norwin and Kiski are the clear top of PA followed by spring Ford and possibly Moon. Just my opinion though.
